During a White House event on Wednesday in which President Barack Obama took questions from Tumblr users, the president was asked to speculate on what his post-presidency would look like in a decade. During the president’s extemporaneous response to that question, he asserted that the world is as safe as it has ever been – ever.

Fools who watch Fox non-News would probably *believe* otherwise, but in terms of death from violence, yeh, we're actually at a historical low. Don't know that I'd characterize it as more safe, just less dangerous.

If anyone has any bona fide stats to the contrary though, I'd be interested.

FOX News? Has nothing to do w/ Obama's actual quote. Not sure why you interject a non-related issue into the story, but I'll leave it to you to explain.

If ya can.

Gee, even with 72 school shootings in the past...what, 3 days ?

Sorry AU, I was actually about to come in here and post pretty much the same thing Chris did. The statistics just don't suggest that we're more violent.

Basically all the news is insanely sensationalized, where bad news tends to take precedence even if it isn't very common and is over-represented, and we're also getting a sampling bias due to the fact that with more interconnection and more communication we simply hear stories that before the internet would have been local news.

What planet wide stats are you using ?

I just think it's an odd thing for the President to say, on the heels of the ( yes, much hyped ) school shootings and over 1000 beheadings and Spinal Tap ( it goes to 11 ) level of violence being perpetrated by the *ISIS militants, in Iraq, among others.

* Obama called the group ISIL, while everyone else is referring to the group as ISIS. I get that even they can't make up their mind as to what to call themselves, but I just find it odd that Obama " knows best " and eschews from the rest of the media.

Also, I think for the first time, he referred to this Islamic zealots as ' jihadists ', instead of merely 'militants' or 'extremists'.

What's up w/ that ?

There is a lot of violence in the world. But there used to be even more violence. The 19th and 20th centuries were insaaaanely violent.

http://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/cause-of-death/violence/by-country/

A lot fewer people die in wars now than they used to. Many still do, but fewer. Look at civilian casualties in the big wars of the 20th century and compare to today.

While there are terrible hot spots of crime, crime rates in general are falling.

We're more aware of crime and war than we used to be, so we feel less safe than we are.

So, one day Obama claims gun violence is spiraling out of control here in the USA, but the next day, he says we've never been safer.

And he's not alone...

First Lady Michelle Obama last week told students at a Chicago high school that kids across the nation “wake up and wonder whether they’re going to make it out of school alive” because of guns.

In March, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) told MSNBC that so-called “assault weapons” were claiming the lives of “millions of kids.” Of course the statement is incorrect, but it was such an inaccurate statement it boggles the mind how he came up with that figure.

em-to-debunk-one-of-the-main-arguments-made-by-gun-control-advocates

Such mixed messages tend to be the mark of a very inept and poor leader.

Which would explain Obama.

I thought you were complaining that Obama was saying it's safer and you were saying that he's lying. This makes a lot more sense.

EDIT: wait, bullshit. Your first post in this thread is totally listing a bunch of things that you say indicates that the world is more violent than Obama's saying.

World Becoming Less Violent: Despite Global Conflict, Statistics Show Violence In Steady Decline

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/22/world-less-violent-stats_n_10
26723.html

Obama was right, again.

"WASHINGTON -- It seems as if violence is everywhere, but it's really on the run.

Yes, thousands of people have died in bloody unrest from Africa to Pakistan, while terrorists plot bombings and kidnappings. Wars drag on in Iraq and Afghanistan. In peaceful Norway, a man massacred 69 youths in July. In Mexico, headless bodies turn up, victims of drug cartels. This month eight people died in a shooting in a California hair salon.

Yet, historically, we've never had it this peaceful.

That's the thesis of three new books, including one by prominent Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker. Statistics reveal dramatic reductions in war deaths, family violence, racism, rape, murder and all sorts of mayhem.

In his book, Pinker writes: "The decline of violence may be the most significant and least appreciated development in the history of our species."

And it runs counter to what the mass media is reporting and essentially what we feel in our guts.

Pinker and other experts say the reality is not painted in bloody anecdotes, but demonstrated in the black and white of spreadsheets and historical documents. They tell a story of a world moving away from violence."

Nigeria explosion at Abuja shopping mall kills 21, wounds 17

Nigerians are immediately blaming the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram after an explosion killed 21 people at a shopping mall in the capital, Abuja on Wednesday.

The blast came as many Nigerians were preparing to watch their country's Super Eagles play Argentina at the World Cup in Brazil. Many shops at the mall have TV screens but it was unclear if the explosion was timed to coincide with the match, which started an hour later.?

Victims injured by the blast in the crowded shopping district are taken to the nearby Maitama general hospital in Abuja. The explosion tore through the popular shopping centre during rush hour on Wednesday, a police spokesman said.

100 years ago, maybe even 50, maybe 25, 27 people killed in an accident or attack in far-off Nigeria would have been strictly local news. The world wide media would never have noticed.

The over-all level of violence has declined; and the overall level of media coverage and communication increased; to such a degree that attacks of that scale are large enough to be noticeable.
