Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Nope, Geezer can't address the topic!

AFA companys (sic) fleeing to Texas.... well, you guys must LOVE China and Mexico, and want us to be JUST LIKE THEM! I guess Texas is doing its best to turn itself into a cheap imitation of those corrupt, impoverished, polluted, dried-up nations.

Good on you, Texas!
------------

I have to say, tho, when it comes to all the awful indicators, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia would give Texas a run for its money. You would be hard-pressed to find a fatter, poorer, more drug-addled, more ignorant, more religious, dirtier, and more self-hating group of states in the nation. They've sucked up more Federal dollars than they've ever contributed. Yet despite being on the Federal Welfare list for decades and decades, they've apparently never made much good use of that money. And despite soaking up all those Federal Dollars, they keep complaining about the Washington gubmint handing out too much money.

Yanno what? The Civil War was terrible mistake. I think we should restrospectively honor their wishes, and kick them out of the Union. Or, the next time they "threaten" to secede, show them the open door. Run a referendum, and have all the papers signed and ready to go. They hate gubmint taxes and the fiat currency so much? They can develop their own currency, and take care of their own border security too, while they're at it.

Yup, Texas tops list of states with most executions, 676 since 1930, followed by Georgia with 405. New York comes next in executions since 1930 with 329, but has had NONE since 1976, while Texas has had more since then than New York ever did. ( http://www.infoplease.com/toptens/deathpenalty.html)

Makes sense big businesses are moving to Texas, why wouldn't they want a place where workers have no protection and labor is cheap, so they can profit the most on the backs of the poor?

Sure.

You can pull bad figures for most any state.

California, for example.

Ranks 4th in prevalence of poor mental health.

Ranks 1st in number of Chlamydia cases.

Ranks 1st in number of Gonorrhea cases.

Ranks 8th in needing treatment for drug use.

Ranks 1st in number of births with low birth weight.

Ranks last in The percentage of 8th grade students that achieved a scale score in the subject of Science at or above the level of Advanced.

Ranks 50th in voter turnout.

Ranks 46th on the Best Educated index.

Ranks 51st on availability of public libraries by hours open.

And there's plenty more.

So California appears to be the home of crazy non-readers with STDs who don't care about education or pre-natal care.

Of course you can go out to Statemaster.com and do the same for any state.

Click on States A-Z, pick your state on the list, and choose Bottom Rankings.

All that is good about Texas is because voting Texans want it. All that's bad is because they want that, too. The Tea Party likes to pretend that the bad doesn't exist or, even more obstinately, that the bad is necessary to receive the good. They can't admit to willingly making the choice. It is part of their character.

I live in Baytown, Texas, upwind from the ExxonMobile refinery. When Texas comes in last place, it is a deliberate choice because the state is rich enough with natural gas to be whatever it wants. And it wants George Bush and Rick Perry. Those two have ruled Texas for 20 years.

The majority of voting Texans wanted George Bush, the first governor in Texas history to be elected to two consecutive four-year terms. And Texas wanted Bush to be President, twice, which says something about what voting Texans value. The next governor, Rick Perry, will have served 14 years when he retires, longest of any governor, which says even more about what voting Texans want.

The Bible told Rick Perry how to govern Texas. So that's that. Perry won't question God's plans, for Perry is a man of strong faith and powerful conviction. When he says that he is doing what God wants, he has really exaggerated feelings of self-importance.

Talk to a Tea Party Texan and you will see they think they're Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, and Jim Bowie, of the big knife fame, all rolled into one person.

When you're rich and in charge, you can indulge yourself with exaggerated notions about your wisdom, bravery, and goodness. No one can change your mind. While other states have to compromise their dreams, Texas is eexactly what it wants to be.

Texans who didn't vote have to live with the choices by the majority of voting Texans. That's obvious. But the majority ought to acknowledge when they choose last place for Texas, but they won't. It is a personality trait Texans have -- it's God will, not their will.

Texas is number one for the things it wants to be first. When it wants to be last, it comes in last. For what Texas does the worst, it is a deliberate choice by Texas. We're not some other state, like Mississippi, that has no good choices. Things happen in Texas as planned, but some plans Texans don't want to own as their personal choice. When things go deliberately wrong in Texas, it is natural to say it is God's plan because He works in mysterious ways.

From what I've read, Sig, Rap writes from Atlanta, Georgia, which might explain a few things.

Doesn't explain how he's gone off the rails so VERY badly however...North Korea? That's almost as bad as his Soylent Green insanity, but then I'd given up expecting any sanity from him a while ago when it comes to politics, he's become completely deranged. California losing out to Texas? As we all know, Rap just spouts whatever comes into his head, and there's nothing in there but what exists in his own warped mentality, so trying to "discuss" anything with him is an exercise in futility.

Of course you can find bad things about any state, and good things. Sad that Geezer, as usual, has to reach so far to try to make some kind of "point". Comparing the things he put up--8th grade students, STDs, low birth weight, "needing treatment" for drugs (what does that even mean?)--with the huge numbers of the populace impacted by poverty, lack of health insurance, and the other things listed about Texas, is pretty desperate. But that's fine; every state has its weaknesses, there's no argument California has slipped horribly on education (thank you, Ronny Ray-Guns) and nobody ever said we were perfect, I'm just glad I don't live in Texas.

Since Geezer wants to pick on us, we're also #1 in gross state product (6th largest economy in the world), and the most diverse geographic state in the nation. We're lowest in per-capita gas consumption, third in "Married Couple Families With Own Children", 48th in death rate per capita and 49th in the number of current smokers, etc. You can find good and bad in every state. How many PEOPLE are affected by where a state ranks and what it says about their lives is what's important, as I see it.

That's how Rick Perry puts things. And part of Obamacare in Texas is controlled by Perry, who "deliberately" did nothing because to do more would interfere with his political plans after he retires from the governorship, such as a run for President. God wants Perry to be President and Perry will pray and then decide whether that burden is too great.

So, I picked just one thing off your 'list' - the very first thing I chose - and it turns out to be false:

Ranks 1st in number of births with low birth weight.

http://www.americashealthrankings.org/CA/birthweight/2012
How can it be first I wonder when California has a low birth weight percentage of 6.8% and Texas has a rate of 8.4%. Can you explain that, Geezer?

So much for your 'list'.

Voters inside Texas are strongly in favor of Rick Perry. He gives them what they want. Voters outside Texas don't know Perry, which is why Mitt Romney beat him in the primary. Also, Romney was not gulping "pain pills" for a "bad back" before the debate, like Perry was.

Seccession hell, I am down with the idea of EVICTION.
Given how parasitic the "Red States" are suckin off the Govt Tit even as they decry the taxation which makes their exploitation possible, I'd LOVE to see them try to cope as the filler which makes their bullshit economic theories look functional gets yoinked out from under them - at which point their economies would be a lot like a V-8 engine with three pistons missing, it might make a lotta noise, but it ain't GOIN very far.

And of course, when their inevitable unsustainable selfdestruction reaches a point where they start inventing excuses to get aggressive and pick a fight since their land is all polluted and uninhabitable and their ignorance and stupidity abrogating womens rights has left them with serious overpopulation issues as well as a population stupid enough to think it might work....

Come on folks, any reasonable person knows how that'd go.
Not that it would, because for all their big talk, culturally Texans are pretty gutless and only willing to fight at all when backed into a corner, History shows that one pretty clearly.
One reason I am so willing to force the issue.

Well, one good thing about Texas. It's a suitable place for George 'dubya' Bush to be trapped. But it's gotta suck. Can't travel the world, gotta lay low for the rest of your life, and it's TEXAS of all places. I wonder what they promised him ... endless drugs?

You must mistake the US for a modern society. Unfortunately, there are plenty of people who are willing to shovel lunacy on the population for personal gain - short-term greed runs everything best, vengeance is productive, the US is right no matter how many people we kill in the name of freedom - and plenty of people who eagerly eat it up. I'm not sure what posts you've seen from our reichtwhinge that makes you think any different. Despite the fact that they act like caricatures, I assure you they are real, and they and people like them actually have enough support - and money - to control governments.
