- Harry Reid

Seriously, Harry is blaming a lack of education for the problems people are facing in trying to sign up for O-Care ?

Hell, why not just blame AlGore ? Oh, yeah. Can't do that. He's a Democrat too.

You can just SMELL the Dems desperation!

Quote:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid tried to explain the Obama administration's latest decision to extend a key ObamaCare deadline by saying people just "are not educated on how to use the Internet."

The explanation, which glossed over the myriad technical problems HealthCare.gov had for weeks after its October launch, came as the administration faced Republican criticism for a late-breaking decision to extend a looming deadline for some. Open enrollment in the Affordable Care Act federal exchanges is set to end March 31, but the Department of Health and Human Services will let those who start the application process before that date have a bit more time to finish.

Reid, and the Obama administration, will not call the change a "delay."

"We have hundreds of thousands of people who tried to sign up and they didn't get through," Reid said during a press conference, before describing the difficulties people have with the Internet in general.

"There are some people who are not like my grandchildren who can handle everything so easily on the Internet, and these people need a little extra time. ... The example they gave us is a 63-year-old woman came into the store and said, 'I almost got it. Every time I just about got there, it would cut me off.' We have a lot of people just like this through no fault of the Internet, but [because] people are not educated on how to use the Internet," he said.

The administration has fixed many of the major issues with HealthCare.gov since its disastrous launch. But it continues to lag behind its enrollment goals. Giving people more time to sign up could boost those enrollment numbers.

Officials made clear, though, that they will rely on the honor system with this extension. Those who come to the site after April 1 will have to attest that they were in line before that date.

House Speaker John Boehner said Wednesday that the move has rendered another ObamaCare deadline "meaningless."

Too bad that who ever did the planning for the exchanges didn't realize that some of the older people signing up might not be familiar with the internet and prefer to either use paper documents or do the signup face to face.

Looks like the Rule of the Seven Ps strikes again.

Harry Reid ( 74 ) relays an example of a woman ( 63 ) who apparently was so damn ignorant on how to use the internet, she kept cutting herself off before she was able to sign up.

How gorram precious.

Apparently these folks are too stupid to make use of the other means of signing up, like calling, or finding a brick and mortar walk in location, or SOMEHOW contacting one of the ACA's glorious navigators.

Because lack of education has obviously left certain folks in the dark over these things too.

Less than a week after Obama admin. officials testified before Congress that there WOULD NOT BE a delay beyond March 31 for the individual mandate, Obama announces a two week delay. So add another lie to his list. He's so desperate to hit some imaginary sign-up number that he doesn't see what all of these arbitrary delays have actually done. For this, a person merely needs to click a button to ask for a delay. No proof of any excuse or explanation is needed. And beyond the new April 15 deadline, a person only has to say they're "confused or unable to sign-up" to get an indefinite deadline waiver. So in reality, there is NO individual mandate. All that fighting with Republicans over it, and even the Supreme Court decision was all un-necessary bullshit.

Also, the "back end" of this, the part that links Healthcare.gov enrollees to insurers and vice-versa is still not built. There is no central database to provide information as to how many have actually paid for the plan they signed-up for, and no information as to quality assurance of plan benefits or actual delivery of services

And lastly, there is still, after four years and 157 White House visits by the IRS Commissioner, no system or method in place for the IRS to levy fines against individuals or businesses who do not comply with the law.

Obamacare is dead. And the Democrats in Congress know it. They don't neeed Nate Silver to tell them their goose is cooked. Only the truly delusional ones would have been surprised by his prediction.

second - big difference in who has signed up, and who has enrolled ( paid ). There's legitimate reason for anyone to cry foul over this admin's dishonest reporting of the numbers on this matter.

The Admin first claimed the min target was 7 million, then 6 million ( when it became clear that 7 wasn't happening ). THEN they tried to claim 7 million was NEVER their target. ( lie ).

The only thing collapsing here is O-Care.

There's a chart only including states that have broken out Paid vs. Unpaid Enrollments. If you only use those 10 states as a guideline, it looks like the paid rate is around 85% http://acasignups.net/14/03/21/paidunpaid-brouhaha-updated

And the 15% who have not paid, most have not gotten their first bill.

And some have not paid because the bill was for one cent per month. Yes, that is $0.01. Ridiculous, yes?

I know this because Shirley has a balance of -$0.97 or minus 97 cents on her Obamacare insurance. Shirley sent a one dollar money order to cover her first month's premium with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. Every month she gets another bill to show she owes another cent. It appears that the law requires everybody to pay some part of their premiums, every month, even if their fraction of the premium is a penny. That must be politics because it makes no business sense to send a bill that is smaller than the cost of a postage stamp.

It is as if the Tea Party was trying to persuade people to not pay and then the Tea Party complains about people not paying. Very useful Tea Party.

For all that this is clearly a pro-ACA site, you can pull some pretty interesting numbers out of their data.

For example, one chart shows around 22.5 million uninsured individuals eligible for the healthcare exchanges.
http://acasignups.net/potential-enrollments

Then there's an article about how many exchange signups were previously uninsured, which arrives at a 62% figure.
http://acasignups.net/14/03/25/new-york-kentucky-finally-clarity-previ
ously-uninsured-numbers

So of the 6.39 million signups estimated to occur by the end of the signup period, 3.9 million will have been previously uninsured.

This means only 17.3% of the uninsured eligible to sign up through the exchanges will have done so, leaving 18.3 million eligible folks with no insurance.

Not great.

Which was inevitable from the way the law was written. Another example of a law written to partially fail was Social Security. At the beginning of Social Security, nearly two-thirds of all African Americans in the labor force, 70 to 80 percent in some areas in the South, and just over half of all women employed were not covered by Social Security. At the time, the NAACP protested the Social Security Act, describing it as “a sieve with holes just big enough for the majority of Negroes to fall through.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Social_Security_in_the_United_
States#Initial_opposition

Southern congressmen supported Social Security, but wished to avoid legislation which might interfere with the racial status quo in the South. The solution to this dilemma was to pass a bill that both included exclusions and granted authority to the states rather than the national government. Jumping ahead 8 decades, the Tea Party did similar legal sabotaging to Obamacare law and then the Tea Party calls Obamacare a failure.

Considering that the Republicans had no input on the ACA legislation whatever, and that all delays in implementation so far have been at the behest of the president, that's going to be a pretty difficult claim to support.

Very disingenuous of you.

Democrats were stupid to let Republicans near the drafting of Obamacare law. After the crime was committed, Republicans wiped off their fingerprints. Dr Frankenstein would be horrified at the absurd process of assembling the Obamacare document from pieces of dead Republican & Democrat legislation. Obamacare law was a cut-and-paste document made from many proposed laws.

Among the laws were the United States National Health Care Act, the America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, the Healthy Americans Act (Wyden–Bennett), and the America’s Healthy Future Act (Baucus plan).

If Democrats had written a pristine version of Obamacare, it would have been called Medicare for All, but Republicans were there every step, with all kinds of "helpful" suggestions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gang_of_Six

There's no plausible legislative tweak to address this mess, since Republicans are implacably opposed to improving Obamacare in any way, shape, or form.

Interesting how you go from Tea Partiers sabotaging the ACA to blaming it on three of the most middle-of-the-road Republicans in the "gang of Six", who actually had no input at all to the ACA. If you want to blame anyone for the mess that the ACA is, you have to blame the Democrats entirely, since they were the ones who argued amongst themselves about it, wrote it, and then passed it without any Republican involvement. You might also place some blame on the President, who declared he wanted a healthcare plan, and then provided almost no leadership or direction to the Democrats in congress.

Trying to blame the Republicans now that the Democrats' legislation is falling apart is actually pretty disingenuous of you.

Second, you seem to not understand that Obamacare is working exactly as it was designed, minus the delays of implementation to try to salvage the Democrat Party before elections throw them out.
The "problems" resulting from Obamacare are exactly what the legislation was intended to do, the havoc wreaking is precisely how it was designed. Nobody knew what was in it, it was submitted and crafted by the phamaceutical donors to Dem coffers, and Speaker Pelosi clearly stated that no debate was allowed, and the legislation had to be passed so that anybody could find out what was in it - because nobody knew what was in it until after the Democrats passed it.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2014/an-extinction-in-the-blink-of-an-ey
e-0210.html

An extinction in the blink of an eye
MIT researchers find that the end-Permian extinction happened in 60,000 years — much faster than earlier estimates.

The largest mass extinction in the history of animal life occurred some 252 million years ago, wiping out more than 96 percent of marine species and 70 percent of life on land — including the largest insects known to have inhabited the Earth. Multiple theories have aimed to explain the cause of what’s now known as the end-Permian extinction, including an asteroid impact, massive volcanic eruptions, or a cataclysmic cascade of environmental events. But pinpointing the cause of the extinction requires better measurements of how long the extinction period lasted.

Now researchers at MIT have determined that the end-Permian extinction occurred over 60,000 years, give or take 48,000 years — practically instantaneous, from a geologic perspective. The new timescale is based on more precise dating techniques, and indicates that the most severe extinction in history may have happened more than 10 times faster than scientists had previously thought.

“We’ve got the extinction nailed in absolute time and duration,” says Sam Bowring, the Robert R. Shrock Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at MIT. “How do you kill 96 percent of everything that lived in the oceans in tens of thousands of years? It could be that an exceptional extinction requires an exceptional explanation.”

In addition to establishing the extinction’s duration, Bowring, graduate student Seth Burgess, and a colleague from the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology also found that, 10,000 years before the die-off, , the oceans experienced a pulse of light carbon, which likely reflects a massive addition of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. This dramatic change may have led to widespread ocean acidification and increased sea temperatures by 10 degrees Celsius or more, killing the majority of sea life.

But what originally triggered the spike in carbon dioxide? The leading theory among geologists and paleontologists has to do with widespread, long-lasting volcanic eruptions from the Siberian Traps, a region of Russia whose steplike hills are a result of repeated eruptions of magma. To determine whether eruptions from the Siberian Traps triggered a massive increase in oceanic carbon dioxide, Burgess and Bowring are using similar dating techniques to establish a timescale for the Permian period’s volcanic eruptions that are estimated to have covered over five million cubic kilometers.

“It is clear that whatever triggered extinction must have acted very quickly,” says Burgess, the lead author of a paper that reports the results in this week’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, “fast enough to destabilize the biosphere before the majority of plant and animal life had time to adapt in an effort to survive.”

Pinning dates on an extinction

In 2006, Bowring and his students made a trip to Meishan, China, a region whose rock formations bear evidence of the end-Permian extinction; geochronologists and paleontologists have flocked to the area to look for clues in its layers of sedimentary rock. In particular, scientists have focused on a section of rock that is thought to delineate the end of the Permian, and the beginning of the Triassic, based on evidence such as the number of fossils found in surrounding rock layers.

Bowring sampled rocks from this area, as well as from nearby alternating layers of volcanic ash beds and fossil-bearing rocks. After analyzing the rocks in the lab, his team reported in 2011 that the end-Permian likely lasted less than 200,000 years. However, this timeframe still wasn’t precise enough to draw any conclusions about what caused the extinction.

Now, the team has revised its estimates using more accurate dating techniques based on a better understanding of uncertainties in timescale measurements.

With this knowledge, Bowring and his colleagues reanalyzed rock samples collected from five volcanic ash beds at the Permian-Triassic boundary. The researchers pulverized rocks and separated out tiny zircon crystals containing a mix of uranium and lead. They then isolated uranium from lead, and measured the ratios of both isotopes to determine the age of each rock sample.

From their measurements, the researchers determined a much more precise “age model” for the end-Permian extinction, which now appears to have lasted about 60,000 years — with an uncertainty of 48,000 years — and was immediately preceded by a sharp increase in carbon dioxide in the oceans.

‘Spiraling toward the truth’

The new timeline adds weight to the theory that the extinction was triggered by massive volcanic eruptions from the Siberian Traps that released volatile chemicals, including carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere and oceans. With such a short extinction timeline, Bowring says it is possible that a single, catastrophic pulse of magmatic activity triggered an almost instantaneous collapse of all global ecosystems.

Andrew Knoll, a professor of earth and planetary sciences at Harvard University, says the group’s refined timeline will give scientists an opportunity to test whether the timing of the Siberian Traps eruptions coincides with the extinction.

“Most mechanisms proposed to account for the observed pattern of extinction rely on rapid environmental change, so the sharp constraints on timing also serve as tests of these ideas,” Knoll says. “[This new timeline] bring us closer to the resolution of a major problem posed by the geologic record.”

To confirm whether the Siberian Traps are indeed the extinction’s smoking gun, Burgess and Bowring plan to determine an equally precise timeline for the Siberian Traps eruptions, and will compare it to the new extinction timeline to see where the two events overlap. The researchers will investigate additional areas in China to see if the duration of the extinction can be even more precisely determined.

“We’ve refined our approach, and now we have higher accuracy and precision,” Bowring says. “You can think of it as slowly spiraling in toward the truth.”
