Microsoft already did something similar with the Kinect, which is why I don't have one, and NONE of my consoles are hooked up to the net, the growing prevalence of this kinda bullshit is WHY I've started to move back to console gaming, instead of paying ownership cost for a rental - one of many reasons.

Anything someone else can arbitrarily take from you without your consent, you do not own - this includes a TV where the firmware or what have you can be nuked by remote.

Addin surveillence to this is insult to injury.

Ironic, I got a piece of disguised junkmail last night, dolled up to look like a legal notice, which was in fact a shill for an auto dealer, which ALSO contained some kind of tracking device pretending to be a discount code, a little widget about the size of a flash drive...
It had a close encounter with my baton.

Your car also spies on you, if you have an EDR or EZ-Pass, and anyone who knows how can access those by remote without you even being aware of it - was discussing this with a resident cause with some GM products you can get the prefix that way, crossref with make/model, and then know exactly which chip to tape to a master key, making theft much easier.
