For 30 seconds beginning Wednesday at 2 p.m., "this is a test" will be broadcast on radio, TV and cable stations, satellite radio and television services, and wireline video service providers across the country.

The national alert and warning system was established to enable the president to address the American people during emergencies and disasters. The system never has been tested nationwide.

The National Weather Service, governors and state and local emergency officials also can use aspects of the system for localized alerts.

I think that in another situation, if things were different, if things had happened differently, I would have become a reporter, you know the ones who go live to places in the middle of natural disasters or what have you and do the daring stories. Ever since I can remember I've enjoyed watching the news, particularly breaking news, its exciting to see and be on top of whatever is going on in the world, or down the street. Perhaps that's morbid but there you have it. In contrast I cry at the news fairly easily so make of that what you will.

The point being that whenever I was little, and secretly sometimes now, whenever I see the emergency broadcast thing I get interested and wait to see if its something real or if its a test. I've only been privvy to two incidents when it wasn't a test, both were for thunder storms that ended up not being that significant, but it sure was exciting, not necessarily in a good way, but in an anticipatory way. Plus I was excited about the thunderstorms because I really enjoy them, so much power.

Doesn't the president take over the air waves whenever he gives those state of the Union speeches? When those are on I can't watch anything else on network TV, arrrrgh.

Doesn't seem like their test went all that well.
