I'm reading a book, part of a series of which I've read other volumes. The character mentions There was a line I heard in a movie once:"Hell, I'll kill a man in a fair fight...or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight."

Barry Eisler's Requiem for an Assassin, Chapter 6, second page. Printed 2007, the character (John Rain) mentions that up until a few years ago, he had a motto, which was summarized above. That would suggest it was before 2005.

Was that quote used proir to Serenity? I can't place it in any other film. Can any of you?

Actually, unless you know the quote is in earlier books in the series as well, my guess is it's a Serenity shout out, as opposed to Serenity being a shout out to the book.

Unless that's what you're asking?

It could not be Serenity shouting out to the book, published 2 years later.

If it was referring to Serenity as the source movie, the author seemed vague enough to be unsure which film he heard it in, maybe just remembered the line, not the name of the film.

I still thought that was shiny enough if the case.

My question was if that line was original to Serenity, or if it had been in another film which Joss alluded to. When ruminated the possibiloity, I could see the line pulled off by a Warren Oates character, or Bruce Dern character, in a western most likely. Adam is a fan of Warren Oates, as well. Although John Wayne could have pulled off such a line, I don't recall a role of his that would fit, unless The Shootist.

So the query remains - was this line a Serenity original, or has it been used in another film?

If it's an original, then he was referencing Serenity whether he specifically knew it or not. The line just resonated so much that it stuck with him. Or he might be a browncoat.

Don't see anything on wikiquote from any other movies, so I'd guess it's a shout out to Serenity. :)

I was able to find the assumption was accurate.

In the Acknowledgments of the book, the line "is from Joss Whedon's terrific movie Serenity."

Shiny.
