Well I'd say that Japan is worrying about China's military capacity, quite rightly, rather than preparing for war as such.

It was interesting according to Wikileaks how China kind of wishes the North Korean thing would just go away.

On independent sources I can say that China is of two minds: One part wants NK to go away, and wishes the govt. (of china) would stop funding NK, and this school of thought is even within the top levels of the govt. of China (yeah, I'm not really totally ignorant on this)

The other side also within the chinese govt. is arming NK to invade SK which is part of their own manifest destiny. The hardcore hardliner communists have a vision of China which includes at least all of mainland east asia.

If China does support NK into war with SK, Japan has said already that it will militarily defend SK. I think it's definitely to the discredit of the US that we have not said we will do the same.
