Dude, is there a way you could start a "This is all about ME" area where AURaptor's endless baiting could be intermittently dumped? As fun as it can be to piss on the little troll, it DOES take up a lot of thread time- I'm lookin' to cut down some.

Uh...wow...things must change when I'm not around, since I don't reall AURaptor being all that Trollish. Now KINGEICHOLZ, there someone I would more likely list as a person of trollish behavour. But that's my PERSONAL opinion.

Still, a valid point. The ability to mute threads and comments from people (like Gmail does supposedly) would be handy when the occasional go se stirrer comes a'visitin'

Found this online

"Your Troll / Stalker Advice Works! "
says Trollminator

I have been battling two very persistent trolls on Google Groups now for about two years. They latched on to me from Ebay, and also by reading my FS/FA ads on Usenet. I did a search and found your website on trolls/stalkers.

I adopted your strategies, using "branding" and a "no-reply" course of action. If they post on their own, I brand them using your format. If they reply to my branding posts, I ignore their post and don't reply.

I also toy with the trolls occasionally when I want a good laugh- by using your "mocking" technique - I assign their posts a "troll-o-meter" rating, that simply drove one troll bananas - and he went berserk posting flames after that. I then "branded" him again, pasting his Google URL profile link, which lists all his posts he just made while he was in a rage - making him look even worse.

For the last three days I've been laughing my nuts off at these two trolls- they have also found your site and attempted to flame me for using it - but they have no defense against your techniques!

And both of them, knowing they ARE the trolls, don't dare use your techniques on me- their posts just don't stick or hold any water.

Thanks for the great info. So far one troll has lost two Ebay accounts, the other has lost one Ebay account- and both have lost a few Google accounts between them. I also hammered their ISP's with complaints, and they have lost some newsreader rights and a few ISP's as well.

Your technique WORKS !

It's like your site is kryptonite or something to trolls - they know it's there, they have read all the anti-troll countermeasures, but they can't use them against me - their troll nature won't allow it.

They know they are trolls, and for some reason, true full-blooded trolls not only crumble
under brands and mocks, but their troll nature won't allow them to use brands and mocks effectively against others who are not trolls. It's uncanny- and funny as hell !! Maybe they're just too stupid

They did try to razz me about using your site for tips - but I simply used your #1 recommended weapon, and ignored their posts. So their countermeasure posts wilted on the vine with no replies, making them look like panzy-waists rather than trolls!

Huh. I had just wandered over here to see if anyone had made the suggestion of letting authors of a thread have the ability to delete it. There are other boards which allow this, provided no one has yet replied to it. Some, I think, even allow the author to delete entire threads they've started... ( not real sure on that one, come to think of it. Might be a tad trickier... ) Anyways, just a thought.

Actually, I was going to share another conversion story, but one thing lead to another...

Nice to know your true feelings towards me, even if it's a year + late. No more Jessica Alba posts for you, Chris.

And no, I have no 'sock puppets'. I thought this was all cleared up, some time ago.

I haven't the time or inclination to say more than I already say here. I'm no where near motivated enough to play that game. I'm me, and that should be enough. Seems from this thread, you think so as well.

I oppose deletion by author, because the threadjacks are interesting, and sometimes people post things I want to reference later, and I wouldn't want to limit to having discussions on threads posted by people I trust not to delete.

As to Chris' idea, I think the forum should remain open, but I also see his point. A compromise might be an "ignore" function, where you could have a list of users you were ignoring, and their posts would appear, just as a single line or something, condensed, and then you could click on that line to expand.

That way, the user being ignored would have like one line to advertise the content of their post, so that even those who ignore them might click to see it.

For instance, Kane sometimes posts very relevant and interesting stuff, but it's lost in the swath of trollish negativity, and so is being ignored by everyone.

As for, the Auraptor-Kwicko fights, I don't want to ignore either user, but I certainly would like to ignore the fights.

My point on thread deletes by author are when there are copy cat threads, or cross posts, for when folks don't see a thread on a topic has already been started.

Also, let's face it, there are times when a thread is started that, after some consideration, might have been posted in hast. Of course, if there's a reply, then the delete feature doesn't apply... just an idea.

Rap,

That makes sense. If I may add a slight modification: Thread merge, not delete.

The user already has the ability to delete their own post, if they said something they regret. Thread delete would give one user the power to delete what another user said, and that's a power way too close to Mod for my tastes. Also, bear in mind that if it is instituted as such, you've just appointed PN, Kane and Niki as Mods for this forum, going by number of threads.

Thread merge could take your post, and all of its trailing posts and merge with another thread on the same topic, just posting them in a line. Best if done early, when the number of posts is small.

The merge should ALWAYS append the newer thread to the earlier one. This trick of "I will pre-empt your thread with my near identical thread with my new spin" is one that really annoys me, and we used to have a gentleman's agreement here that this was simply not done, but in the last two years it's cropped up a lot, and I'd like to see it disappear again.

When a merge is proposed, people should vote on it, on the basis of "is this really the same topic" so it might remain merger pending for a little bit, so that the feature doesn't get abused to delete other people's threads.

If you want a "delete thread" button for posts of your own to which there are not yet any responses, then I think it's fair. If there are responses, I think you have to just go in and edit the content of your thread and say something like "Sorry, didn't realize this topic was already being discussed at thread [link]"

Another thing is "post delete" We can make a post blank, but we can't actually delete the post. That might help. Then if a dupe or pointless thread came up, it might go something like this:

Rap: "US invades Libya"
ETA: Oops. Sorry, there's already a thread on this topic at [Link]
--------
DT: My thoughts on Libya

If everyone had a delete post button, then I could say "delete post" and then only once your thread was down to zero responses would you be able to delete thread (*I've seen this done on another forum and I'm trying to remember where.)

Consider another

Rap: "US invades Libya"
Some thoughts on Libya...
--------
DT: This is a dupe thread, [link]
--------
Rap
ETA: Oops. Sorry, merge?

Then if there was no actual thread merge function, we could still do it like this:

You edit your first post to read:

Rap: "US invades Libya"
Sorry, this was a dupe, please merge with [link]
--------
DT: This is a dupe thread, [link]
--------
Rap: [deleted]

Then I could delete

Rap: "US invades Libya"
Sorry, this was a dupe, please merge with [link]
--------
DT: [deleted]
--------
Rap: [deleted]

And then you would have a thread with no responses and you could delete thread.

That would prevent abuses

Actually, iPad is probably the best way to get that.

I think the rest the immersive VR stuff hasn't happened is that there's no interest. It's technologically very doable, but no one really wants to be that out of touch with reality.

I just saw Ray Kurzweil talking about the future integration of man and machine. He's right to a point, but I think that all the organization of the human mind will be external. No one wants a chip in their brain. Sure, they want it when it works the fantasy way that Mr. Gates tells us it is *going* to work when he first has the idea, but no one is really going to want it there when it goes all BSOD on us.

I have a stereoopticon in my drawer from the mid to late 1800s. It delivers an impressive 3d B&W image. I recall its color version popping up in the 1970s, ViewMaster? Something like that. Anyway, neat. But immersive. If I'm immersed, I can't engage other humans. The added value of enhanced reality isn't as powerful as the subtractive force of disconnection from the rest of the known world.

Sure, you might want to disappear into fantasyland, but you want to be able to put the book down at any point. It's this dual pull which has prevented these ideas from taking off, and I suspect, always will. When the plug-in VR circuit that goes right into your brain appears, it will be a fad of mild amusement of 2075, not the basis for a new society. It will be its day's stereoopticon.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

I think thread merge is fine. I'm opposed to blocking users/having certain users' posts not show up all the way. If I want to ignore the Raptor and Quicko fights I can do that already, I can skim a thread if I like, I don't think there's a need to have someone's posts only appear as one line and not the rest unless you click, I think that would be hard for me to figure out so I'm voting against it.
