Tax Dodger Nigel Mansell hurt in attack

Ex-Formula One motor racing champion Nigel Mansell was recovering today after he was hurt confronting a group of youths on his property.

The 49-year-old suffered superficial cuts and bruises after he challenged the group of eight people who had entered the grounds of his £6 million cliff-top mansion at St Brelade's Bay, Jersey, on Good Friday.

Officers from Jersey Police offered him medical assistance but he refused.

Five youths in their late teens and early 20s were arrested on suspicion of assault, a spokesman for Jersey Police said.

Reports suggested they claimed to have been on a nearby beach and took a short cut over through Mr Mansell's property after being cut off by the tide. They have been bailed pending further inquiries. Police continued to search for the other three suspects.

The Jersey Police spokesman said: "A private householder challenged some young men who were apparently trespassing on his property. There was an altercation and the householder suffered superficial injuries.

"Police were called and he was offered medical assistance but declined. Five youths were arrested and bailed pending further inquiries. We are still trying to trace the other three."

Mr Mansell, who was world champion in 1992, issued a statement to journalists which read: "We can confirm that there was an incident which is being dealt with by Jersey Police. We have been advised by them not to comment further."

Mr Mansell and his family moved to the Channel Islands in 1997, buying the cliff-top home four years ago.
