Whedon explains FOX's Firefly decesion.

According to an article posted on SCIFI.COM, Joss Whedon and FOX apparently disagreed over the direction of the series' pilot, which led to FOX's indecision to green-light the series for their Fall lineup. "The story on the Firefly pilot is, part of the back and forth ... between me and Fox ... has been about a drama vs. an action show," said Whedon. "And although I pitched more of a drama with action, they wanted to up the action a little bit."

To put Fox at ease, Joss Whedon and fellow scribe Tim Minear came up with a new script for the premiere that FOX eventually felt comfortable with. "[FOX] wanted to make sure we could deliver the ... [a] show with a little more action and humor than what I had originally pitched," said Whedon. Both worked over the weekend before the decision and by Monday morning handed in a script that eventually led to FOX finalizing their pick up of the series for Fall. "I didn't realize it would be so instrumental in them actually picking up the show. But, yeah, a little pressure. But I love pressure."

As mentioned elsewhere and on this FIREFLYFANS.NET, the original pilot will likely air as a special event episode during mid-season, although a final decision hasn't been made yet.

Firefly premieres in late September and will air on Friday nights in the timeslot previously occupied by James Cameron's Dark Angel.
