Besides, "if wishes were horses" is a very old expression. It's supposed to go, "If wishes were horses then beggars would ride," but Jayne, or Jayne's momma, mixed it up with another one.

Actually the final episode of Angel, as where this quote is taken, was filmed in 2003/2004 (Aired may 2004, not sure when they actually write and shoot the eps). Firefly aired in 2002. So you could say that Spike quoted Jayne, or that joss borrowed lovingly from his other works. It is also a colloquialism, so it could've been inadvertent as well.

Like was already said, it's an old, old expression. Spike also uses it at least one other time in S5, in "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco", when he comes in and overhears Gunn talking about his new super-lawyer knowledge:

Very keen obsrevation. I remember Illyria's line, but had forgotten Spike's reply.

Rewatching Angel and Buffy after Firefly was cancelled, I saw numerous quotes that were either reused through the show it came from or in either of the other 2 shows.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss
