Figured that would get everyone's attention.

S.O. Ogunwolu and C.O. Jayeola, food scientists at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, have mixed cornstarch with cocoa to produce a heat-resistant chocolate that they say compares "favorably with conventional milk chocolate in terms of color, taste, smoothness and overall acceptability."

And, my favourite part:

Quote:

One of the earliest of these culinary offensives occurred in the midst of World War II, when the U.S. Army commissioned research into the creation of a chocolate that soldiers could eat on the go.
[. . .]
During Operation Desert Storm, Hershey's Chocolate tested a high-temperature chocolate capable of withstanding 140-degree temperatures. It was dubbed the "Desert Bar," but troop reactions to its taste were mixed.

I'm not quite sure what this says for the priorities of the military.

If this is where our tax dollars are going. . . Actually, I'd be pretty pleased.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

But melted chocolate is always tastier (if messier) than solid chocolate.
That's just one woman's opinion, though.

I must disagree; it is best eaten with a spoon.
Or on strawberries.

strawberries I'll give you, but the last time I ate melted chocolate with a spoon it was solid again by the third spoonful, so: not worth the trouble

"chocolate paint" or honey are much better suited to such activities.

Sorry to hear it Bachelor-boy!! but you're both a little bit wrong! Good Belgian chocolate, melted and with a little cream mixed in - not too hot and doesn't solidify and the taste is .... OOH! Hmmmmmmmmmm...

I was thinking more of the reason I had to throw out a whole package of Peanut Butter Cups last night (they weren't Peanut Butter Cups anymore, they were mis-shapen abominations against man and nature).

(They'd melted inside the package, then resolidified all fused together and greasy from the escaped peanut oil )

When you are in the desert where things tend to explode with alarming frequency the last thing you are looking for is a heat resistant chocolate bar.

Don't much care for melty chocolate with sand in it. Or anything with sand in it for that matter. They can keep their sand, I'll take the chocolate and a cold place to eat it; everyone involved would be much happier.

Who do you think eats more chocolate, Jayne or Mal? (just to make this post relevant)

I dunno... I think maybe Jayne... but it could be either.

I think we need to work on the definition of melted chocolate. I know, I know, semantics. but still, when you first said melted chocolate I thought the kind of chocolate you leave in your pocket or some other inconvienent place and let it melt with other things and get icky, rather than controlled melted, or liquified chocolate, which I LOVE. chocolate fondue perhaps would be a better term. mmmm... fonduuuuuueeee....

and the army funded another idea like that, ended up with M&M's, only without the colour coatedness, so they didn't melt so much. cased chocolate!

Actually, if more scientists worked on stuff like this instead of building bombs, guns, and war machines, think how much better the world would be.

When you think about it, sufficient chocolate could bring about world peace.

Chocolate. Just roles off my tongue. Chocolate covered donuts with Bavarian Creme filling.

I eat it so fast it ain't got time to melt.

Knew this was one damn nice site when I signed on. And now you proved it.

Should be a rule. All threads must contain the word chocolate in their description.

Try his recepy (dessert for a BBQ):
Make a cut into an unpealed banana (all length), stick two or three pieces of chockolate in the cut and set the banana onto the embers. After a while, the skin of the Banana will be black, the chocolate melted and the banana all mushy. You eat is with a spoon directly out of the skin.

And about non-melting chockolat: we have that already. It's called m&m! So all the taxmoney wasted ...

technically it is the candy coating that doesn't melt, the chocolate still does. I have tested this theory. I have held m&M's in my hand, closed whilst standing in the alabama heat.

It is not an experiment I recommend

The Army is researching this for a simple reason, chocolate (and other candies) have very high energy density (sugar high).

This is an advantage because it allows a little bit of food to go a long way, so soldiers don't have to spend as long eating or have as much in their stomachs if they get gut-shot, and they can carry relatively little weight for the same energy. They need non-melty chocolate because melty chocolate takes longer to eat, gets stuck on things (try to throw a grenade with sticky fingers), and generally causes problems in the field.

So why don't they give them some bottles of mudders milk? Makes 'em happy on top of that!

But I remember a soldier in a play saying, that's how you dstinguish young from old soldiers: the young carry bullets in their pockets, the old ones chocolate.

Because it apparently tastes bad, and if I remember correctly is alcoholic. Drunk, bored people with guns and explosives...pay-per-view?
