Check out Peter Hamilton's The Nights Dawn Trilogy.

Hamilton has put together a vast tapestry of the future that rivals the Dune series in scope and is superior in the use of hard tech.

FTL, Antimatter tech, biotech, nanotech and genengineering are all in full bloom. His somewhat dark take on colonial life is entertaining but reminds me just a little of Sinclair's, The Jungle.

The description of life in the colonies will definitely make you think of Firefly

It is a monster trilogy of over 5000 pages. I am halfway thru the first volume and so far it has been great

Damn. Saw the thread title and thought you were looking for a recommendation, and this was gonna be it.

I read it as it came out in paperback, and was amazed that given the sheer size and scope of the thing that with each new volume my brain had stored away the basics for over a year or more (I forget just how long the gaps were).

If you enjoy Hamilton's writing, he did a series of futuristic detective/thriller novels as well. Haven't had time to set aside to read his last two, but I keeep meaning to - they're more in the Nights Dawn space opera vein I gather.
