Its the second best show ever! Anyone dispute that?

Just wait until you guys get to the last episode for season 1 ..... you'll be amazed!

Not exactly - but I have a hard time ranking good stuff with that kind of precision, and it is VERY good stuff. IMO the two best moves they made were:

1) Terrific visual effects (which I noticed right away were Firefly-like, and it's the same talent behind them, hooray!) Quite a departure from the old series, which had 3 space battle shots - or six, if you count them as different when they played them mirror-image. Don't get me wrong, I was glued to the set for the old series, at least until Galactica 1980 came along.

2) The characters all take the situation much more seriously than they seemed to in the original. It really feels like this is humanity's weakest hour. Arming everyone with bullets and nukes instead of ray guns and Bigger Ray Guns makes the fighting very accessibly threatening. I didn't think I was going to be able to sit through all of "33" for all the menace. Phew.

I also find the new theology interesting - that the Cylons are monotheist and the humans aren't. The original was, to bastardize a Muppet Show favorite, Mormons in SPAAAAAACE!

Gawd. I was beginning to think I was the only person ever to have noticed the Mormons in Space thing.

Of course, I live in Utah, spent my life since I was 14 here, and was raised Mormon, so I wondered if perhaps I was a little super-sensitive to that subtext....despite Glen Larson being Mo'.

....a few minutes later, after doing a quickie google, I find out that there is actually a lot of information on what some have called Battlestar Mormonica.

Good to meetcha! You're the second person I've "met" who is in (well, Northernish) Utah and a Firefly Fan (the other is over at Buffistas). I'm sure there's gotta be more out there, perhaps enough for a meet-up or somp'um (to use strictly Utah speak)?

Wacky, I know.

Just so you know, I am no longer a practicing Mormon, but a practicing agnostic. I practice agnosticism and one day I'm going to get it right.

Although i wasnt happy with the whole "enemy within" theme at first, it seems to be panning out nicely (except, why does it have to be my favourite female character? She's too hot to be a Cylon). The whole paranoia aspect of the situation is very realistic; The military versus the politicians with faith being used allmost as a weapon.
I know it wont happen but, in future series, I would really like to see them meet some Earth colonist coming the other way with a similar level of technology so that the Cylons get a run for their money.
Or maybe the Cylons already know where Earth is.
Maybe they are already here.

I mean Boomer of course, not so keen on six (I've got a thing about blondes).
So now I have to see if I have enough loose change in my pocket to buy a Maxim.
By the way, it's probably a silly question, but is Grace Park related to Linda Park from Enterprise?

America loves a winner!

In 50,000 or so survivors, shouldn't there be at least 1 more 'scientist' in the group besides Baltar? Seems this guy is the only genius in the armada, and they're all relying solely on him and his word on such matters as the Cylon detector. ( And now we see the flaw in THAT scenario. )

Shouldn't there be at least some students or lab assistants of some sort that are at least competent to either work with Baltar, or better still, on their own projects ? Seems a bit much that the fate of all humanity rest w/ this one guy.

I thought this myself - although in only 50K, having only one scientific genius of Baltar's specialty and caliber is plausible; in fact, they're pretty lucky to have that many. The distribution of people in the fleet is probably not a totally typical cross-section of the society, as it'd consist mostly of people who were in spaceships at the time of the attack, plus those who could get to one quickly. That's probably skewed toward the more influential rich part of society (with the exception of things like the prison ship). 50,000 people is a small town by modern standards, and even if it's an affluent small town, it'd be unlikely to contain very many top-notch genetic/cybernetic researchers.

Your point about lab assistants is more what I was thinking - surely there are people who could be trained to help with the Cylon detection and stuff, at least once they've been tested and ruled out as Cylons themselves. You'd think that Adama and the other leaders would be insisting on it, too, with how crazy Baltar acts. I mean, if I saw the one man who's responsible for the fleet's security dry-humping a lab bench I'd start looking for ways to spread the workload a bit.

"Park" is a Korean sirname. It's also transcoded in all of it's other bastardized form as "Pak", "Bark", "Pok"... You name it, they murdered the language in about 3 million different ways. None of these romanization comes close to the actual Korean pronounciation.

Don't squat with your spurs on.

I was really enjoying the show until the last episode. Shooting Adama and a pregnant Cylon. Now I think the writers are trying too hard, in fact I'd say they just jumped the shark.

Anyway, here's the rest my of greviances:

1) There are too many Cylon infilitrators.

2) How the hell did Starbuck manage to make an airtight seal by stuffing her space suit into the bullet hole in the Cylon Raider? At least have her use some sort of repair kit for her suit or the Viper's cockpit bubble.

3) Why is there still viscera hanging inside the captured Cylon raider? Wouldn't they refit the interior.

3) Why would Starbuck sleep with Balthar after she caught him in the lab with his pants around his angles dry humping a lab bench? And why he'd stop after she called out Lee, shoot, I don't care when Mrs. Veteran calls out Mal or Jayne.

4) An aircraft carrier has like 69 planes, seems like the Galactica is bigger than carrier but Apollo said something about only having 40 vipers.

5) The Cylons have too much control and know everything. It's like watching a cat play with a mouse it's caught, except I think the mouse understands it's over.

6) I'm still hooked.

An amusing aside, I watched an episode of the Original Galactica on Sci Fi the other day. Starbuck and Apollo used a captured Cylon Raider to disable a Basestar so the Galactica can defeat it.

It really was a twist the last 5 minutes, didn't see it coming at all.

I don't think its that BS doesn't have enough room for 69 planes, its just they'd have to have a larger crew for that and it seems like everyone is busy.

FINN MAC CUMHAL

I have a real problem with the whole sound in space thing. I don’t know why. I guess because I expected more from BSG. For some reason I was under the impression that the new BSG wouldn’t have sound in space. I cringe every time a viper or a Cylon ship flies by with a Doppler sound effect. It makes me notice all the other ridiculous things, like the jet plumes in space. How do you get jet plumes in a vacuum? This is what I want to know. Lately I’ve also begun to notice that sometimes the ships will bank when they turn! Bank against what? E.G. in the episode before last, when Starbuck disobeyed orders and jumped to Caprica unexpectedly, she turned her Cylon ship away from Apollo’s ship, but not only did she bank when she did it, she also readjusted her lateral vector after the bank. Why? What azimuth plane is she adjusting to? She’s in space! There is no up or down, so why readjust the lateral aspect? Am I the only one who notices this stuff? If I didn’t already shave my head, I’d want to pull my hair out.

I can’t say that the new BSG is necessarily better then the old one. I will say that I am very surprised with how good the story turned out. It really lived up to expectations, which was not easy. I’m not only a very hard sell on science fiction in general, but I was biased against this new BSG, and its rather liberal use of artistic license in casting the characters. I’m quite captivated by how this thing with Boomer is going to work out. It’s interesting that of the two Boomers (Boomer-on-the-Galactica and Boomer-on-Caprica) both of them seem to be traitors to one side or the other.

The Cylon raiders evidently are cybernetic, not strictly electronic. The problem with this is that the Cylon raider requires a source of oxygen as well as a high ambient pressure for its internal mechanics to operate. So the Cylon raider must divert considerable energy and framework to maintaining internal viability and a single puncture that breeches the haul will ‘kill’ the raider. Does this really offer an advantage over a purely electronic system which could stand to be much more robust? I don’t know, but given what I’ve seen of the Cylon’s strategies I should think they would have preferred to go with a large highly robust offensive capability, and leave the “thinking” as it were to their early deployed specialists, but they didn’t ask me.

I am with you Finn, a lot of solid points. Didn't think about the azimuth adjustment until I read your post. The only Sci Fi movie I can think of that made a point of showing that the orientation of the ship is irrelavant in space was 2001: A Space Odyssey.

LISTER

My problems aren't as scientific, it just seems like technology has only evolved in the space travel field. For example, whenever the crew listens to media feeds they are using radios that look like they came from WW2! And why does the president speak at a podium with a microphone, yet the ENTIRE press corps (and there seem to be a disproportionate number of them. How many different news outlets are operating in this post-disaster world? Because the only reason there are so many media at big events is because everyone sends there own reporters/photographers, etc. I don't see the point anymore)...let me continue, the ENTIRE press corps point there own microphones across the room. Does the mic on the podium not work? Also, the world Help and Boomer are stuck on seems REALLY behind for being one of the major planets. I'd say the technology is exactly what we have now! I guess they couldn't maek things like holographic windows and electronic doors on their budget. There are other things I could list, and I know the Galactica uses SOME old equipment for security reasons, but I doubt the things I mentioned would be included in that.

And just for the record, the whole fixing the Raider with her flight suit didn't sit well with me either. I don;t know what kept it from being sucked out in an instant the moment she got into space. Didn't anyone see the last Alien movie?

It is possible that the sound is generated and projected by the computer targeting system into the viper cockpit 3D surround sound system to give the pilots an edge with spatial orientation regarding cylon ships... I know, I know you are laughing but think about it, an audio 3D surround complete with doppler effect would be invaluable to a pilot in a crazy furball!

Or maybe they just stuffed up and put sounds in space..

I dont recall seeing any jet plumes but any chemical thrust propulsion in the vacuum of space would have ejecta emission, maybe that is the plume.

The Vipers have many attitude jets all over them so it seems to me that they could bank by thrusting forward and applying attitude thrust as well. As to the rest of your complaint I am completely lost.

I own the original BSG DVDs and was a big fan back in the day but I have to say the new BSG kicks its ass well and truly.

Don't you know? The enemy's base is DOWN.

Sorry, had to say that.

You have valid points on all those tech issues - but I'd claim that they ARE good about having SOME silent scenes - more than a lot of shows. And Zoic doing the special effects really makes it feel like Firefly-realistic space (not that Firefly is entirely realistic, I know). Perhaps the rocket-emission-sound-transmission idea is a decent excuse, but banking IS silly :)

The problem was the she made two lateral adjustments. The first was when she initiated the turn, and the second was when she finished the turn. The maneuver she made was consistent with a plane banking against the atmosphere and then returning lateral aspect to the artificial horizon. Now I suppose one could argue that the initial lateral adjustment was simple an unintended roll resulting from the maneuvering thrusters, but why the second lateral adjustment? Or maybe the lateral adjustment was needed because she pitched the raider as well as rolled it? In other words she turned to the right with respect to her velocity vector as well as pitched upwards. From the angle we were looking, that might have appeared to be a lateral adjustment. But why the second adjustment? Why return to the same azimuth plane as she was prior to initiating the turn, unless there is some preferred azimuth plane? Why would there be some preferred azimuth plane in space, and how would you even know what that plane was? Presumably there is some kind of artificial gravity in the raider so “down” is always going to be toward the floor of the raider, regardless of the raider’s orientation with respect to any other ships.

At this point, I’m nitpicking. I know. The producers and graphic artists gave the raider that motion because it looked cool. But there is a larger point here, and that is that in all science fiction shows there always seems to be a preferred azimuth plane? Why do the vipers meet up with the Cylon Raiders always in the same lateral orientation? How come we don’t see the Cylon ships rotated some degrees to the left or right with respect to the orientation of the vipers when they meet? Do they plan this ahead of time, and if so how do they communicate the azimuth and aspect of the combat theater plane? What are they measuring these angles against? It really doesn’t make any sense when you think about. There’s no such thing as preferred orientation in space, in general, but somehow or another sci fi space operas* have found one.

*With the exception of a few. The aforementioned 2001 being one of them.

And BSG is better then a lot of shows about their science in space. Certainly they haven't got everything right, but it looks like they're thinking about it, which is good.

The preferred azimuth plane for all the vipers would be the same plane as their Battlestar.. otherwise they may come in to land upside down.

Good point about them meeting up for combat on the same plane though.

SO how about that ending??

did he shake hands with Sharon or hand her a gun?

or would she have still been carring a side arm from the mission

is it July yet?

Also, I can kill you with my brain.

HI guys,

On the contrary, just want to say your discussion on the scientific aspect is very interesting to me. I'll have to remember your comments next time I watch an episode.

I'm a relative newbie here, and don't post very often. From Australia. I'm hooked. Characters are very strong. I have a problem with the scientist's hallucinations of the blond cylon talking to him. Don't know exactly why.

But I do love the show.

Cheers.

#6 (the blond chick in Baltar's head) drives me mad. even more than she apparently manages to drive Baltar mad and he seems pretty nuts sometimes.

I've watched the special features on the miniseries dvd and they said they were going for 'likeable despite being evil' or something to that effect with #6. that they have gloriously failed with me. I hate her with a passion. most of the time even sympathising with Baltar even though he really is a moron.

Boomer is likable even when shooting Adama but #6 is not.

just my humble oppinion of course, please do add yours especially if it contradicts.

and the problem with up and down in space is always a nuissance (sp?).

Sorry, the preferred azimuth plane is a 4d horizon represented by a 4 way sandwich with Sharon, #6, Starbuck (the new one) and moi!

Good point about them meeting up for combat on the same plane though.

I've been rewatching BSG as it airs over here in Australia. Last nights episode was the one with the toilet escene with Baltar and Lt Gaetor. That scene cracks me up!

The two men sitting on toilets
Baltar: "So, hows it going over there?"
---
When Gaetor runs away and Baltar rushes out of his toilet saying "Wait!!... you havent even washed your hands!"

I like Baltar, he aint all bad. After all he didnt deliberately kill the human race. He is in a pretty pickle though..

Phewww! I thought I was the only one thinking that. The only think "likeable" about #6 is her bod, but I tend not to classify that as "like"...

(PS: And what's this about Boomer shooting Adama? Must be in a future episode for us here.)

(Message Edited: sorry, messy post. Also silly question now deleted.)

OK,

Where'd everybody go? I hope it's not something I said.

It's all so quiet on this thread, but that's not the reason for this post...

I'm curious to find out where everyone's up to in different parts of the world, with the series. Which episode did you just see this week? Here in Australia, I think we've only just started, as Calhoun pointed out. I don't mind spoilers, if you don't.

While we're at it, what's everyone's favourite? Mine was the one where Starbuck was lost and found a way to come back with the cylon ship. Apart from shoving some cloth into the gap on the ship to keep it airtight (which is a bit unbelievable), this episode and the one preceding it (when she was struggling with the training of rookie pilots) would have to be my favourites so far.

I think this is partly due to the great space sequences, but also to the very strong and believable Starbuck character.

My least favourites are the ones with Baltar and #6. I guess I'm finding it hard to absorb the concept of such a vivid hallucination. She just looks too real, but then that's how Baltar sees her, I guess.

A good day to you all. And thanks for great posts.

You dont like Baltar! Bah..

I reckon Adama is pretty cool too, he is totally convincing to me as a Battlestar commander.

Maybe I'm a bit harsh. Sorry.

I do sometimes feel for him, but I think I've missed something in the pilot. How did he come to get #6 in his head?

Adama is great. He is gritty and strong. Doesn't take any bull. I wish I had a boss like that.

Baltar seems to think that #6 is simply a part of his psyche, and something his own mind's conjured up (perhaps to help deal with his guilt in royally screwing over the human race). Call it another personality. I'm more inclined to think that it's something #6 did to him or put in him, and that she's not simply a figment of his imagination but that her personality is actually inside his noggin.

Or I might just be drunk.

Does Blue Sun sponser the Blue Man Group?

I tend to think that too. #6 seems just to purposeful to be just a figment of his imagination. Maybe it'll be revealed as a flashback later.

I don't think you're drunk. Made a lot of sense.

Hm, just a quick question to folks:

I don't get Space, so I've been relying on downloaded eps to get my BSG fix (using Azureus and tvtorrents.tv). TvTorrents looks to be down again, so I was wondering if someone had any other suggestions for a Torrent site with eps 9 onwards?

Man, I wish they'd come out on DVD already, lol.
