Has anybody seen this show yet. It's a good mystery that draws you in quickly.
Although I haven't read the book it's based on, it reminds me of some of Larry
Niven's Belter stories. I just wanted to alert people to a good show and get
some feedback and opinions. If you haven't heard, it comes on SYFY tuesday at
10:00 PM. You can see back episodes on their website.

Larry Niven.... 77 years old today... one of the best Sci-Fi writers EVER!

My favorite works he did were probably his collaborations with Jerry Pournelle!

They're so humble about the Hugo Awards surrounding them that you might need a TSA Agent to find them :)

"Niven's Law": There is no cause so right that one cannot find a fool following it.

If you haven't, read Footfall.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

BTW, there's only one "s" in Expanse.

Why hijack the thread, SixString? This is about The Expanse, not Niven or any other writer. The books are by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, writing as James S. A. Corey.

We've already been discussing books and the show here - http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=2&tid=59896

This thread can be for the show, we can try to contain the other one to the books. Very much looking forward to Episode 5 tomorrow night. I've watched the pilot eight times now, the other three four times so far.

That's okay. Since you started the thread, if you go back up to your first post and click the "edit" link you can correct the spelling in the title.

For anyone who hasn't read the books or any of the short stories, I'm hiding my comments on Episode 5: Back to the Butcher in spoiler tags.

Select to view spoiler:

I don't think it was a good idea to have Fred Johnson's backstory in this episode, or at least not in the way they presented it. First, that wasn't in the first novel, it was in the short story "The Butcher of Anderson Station." Second, the events were altered from the story. Third, the flashback slowed down the pace they had developed in the two previous episodes. It would have been better for them to get to Tycho Station first, and have the flashback next week, or just fill us in on his history through dialog instead.

The tenth and final episode of The Expanse for Season 1 ended on cliffhanger.

Season 2 starts in January 2017.

Without reading the books, Shawn Overman makes predictions about future episodes starting at 59:50. As a viewer, my opinion is that it’s better not to know before the characters know. Let it be a surprise.

It was inevitable it would end on a cliffhanger, no matter how far into the first book they got. Even with the additional characters and scenarios that were not in the book, they altered the sequence of some events that were. As it is, they made it approximately 70-75% through Leviathan Wakes.

Based upon this thread, I checked the first season out from the library. By the time I'd had it 2 weeks, 2 people were waiting for it.

At the rate the prime characters get killed off, how many more episodes can they last?

Although some similarities to Firefly, definitely not up to par from my POV. The spacefaring plots are worthy, but the gravity well politics drag.

Thanks for the head's-up, I'm glad I checked it out myself.

And three weeks later my agent says, ‘Read this script. I really think you should.’ And I scroll to the bottom, and that’s when I saw that it was written by the guys who wrote Children of Men, a movie that I think is terrific.

I didn't know that this was the same duo that wrote Children of Men. I loved that movie!

Season 2 is coming! Here's a story from Wired about the show, and what kind of new contributions it makes to scifi shows:

https://www.wired.com/2017/01/geeks-guide-the-expanse-season-2/

"SEASON 2 OF The Expanse premieres February 1 on Syfy. The show features colorful characters, sharp dialogue, and complex political machinations, but what really sets it apart from other sci-fi TV is the realistic way that it handles gravity and orbital trajectories. Much of the credit for that goes to showrunner Naren Shankar, who holds a PhD in physics and engineering from Cornell.

“Most space battles are just re-hashes of World War II fighter battles in the Pacific,” Shankar says in Episode 240 of the Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy podcast. “And that’s fine, if they want to be that kind of a fantasy, but I find great beauty in the way the ships move in our show.”

Much in the way Whedon tried to be faithful to some realities of space (no sound in space), this show goes even further. Fingers crossed.

I have not seen the books. Do they cover only season one? Are they less dark? Often in books I can skip past parts I don't care about, such as the politics as portrayed in the series.
What reasons did you prefer the books for this story?

I haven't seen "Expanse" yet. I am in the UK and as far as I was aware it went straight to Netfix which I do not have. The books are fabulous, wonderful writing. There are six in the series so far by James S. A. Corey - Leviathan Wakes, Caliban's War, Abadon's Gate, Cibola Burn, Nemesis Games and Babylon's Ashes. And I agree, Larry Niven is a great writer too. Off now to check the website. Ali D :~)

Episode 4 of season one is my favourite. That's the one where the MCRN Battleship Donnager comes under attack from unknown ships. Awesome space battle physics and special effects. The martian marines are pretty cool too.
Its the episode where the Rocinante is introduced.

I might try watching this, after seeing those trailers a long time ago....try watch again
only because nothing else is out there.

Reason I had NOT to watch

I already kinda knew where the show was going, I'm not a big book reader but I did read one book a while back and wasn't overly impressed, it read like a werid Asteroid belt fan fiction board game thing
The series says Leviathan Wakes you had culture like India, Hinduism, the UN etc NOT the United States will be the major cultural player in space....this just kinda sucks for me, this is just dumb fiction and less science to me, nothing against Hinduism I also do not believe Neo-Mohammedanism or future inbred Islamists will make contributions to space exploration.
The books may be Game Of Thronesy hyped, I believe one of the writers used to edit the Game of Thrones books, so he may have got free publicity and the books might be ranked higher than they should be.
One of the Actors I believe is Rapist Weinstein-like, accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct.
Not impressed with the visual rotten poverty look, I prefer a little up beat stuff in scifi once in w hile the Poverty everywhere scruffy people, crime and misery people yelling on board some ugly uninteresting space tug broken military ship...without the role play gamer element and the werid replicator protomolecule fungus cloud thing there wouldnt be much of a plot in the books.
The clips I seen of the tv it seemed like a Weirdo pregressive Leftist Jeff Bezos' influenced fantasy, people in some Slave like Amazon factory much like its book source material.
The series had more eps than Firefly but it also got cancelled....so you have the possiblity of an annoying unresolved plot or cliff hanger.

Reasons for me to watch
Interesting reviews here and online, it has a fanbase that like the series for whatever reasons.
It's a fictional fantasy scifi story with potential to explore other ideas, the typical story of a crapped up Earth, dystopia rule, pollution in the future, global currency etc.
I guess the exploration of the Caste system is interesting Mars annoyed with Earth who seem to have it all but are 'ungrateful' a scifi look at Caste systems.
Yes the sounds, the props the CGI are strong, the visual effects are outstanding.
I dont know if you can binge watch or marathon view something like this...Even if I dont get addicted in the first few episodes there might be something in the show that brings people back to 'watch it later'

The good moments kept coming in the final chapter of the 9th book of the series, Leviathan Falls, published in 2021. Holden and Miller are still having the Monkey and Mozart conversations and it is still funny.
