Joss Whedon's falling out (or whatever you'd call it) with Marvel has been one of the most publicly documented yet thinly-veiled breakups in recent memory. In the time since Avengers: Age of Ultron was released, Whedon has lamented the loss of Edgar Wright's Ant-Man script and criticized both the decision to turn Daredevil into Netflix series rather than another movie and the general state of Marvel among other grievances.

But Whedon's issues seem to extend far beyond just sour grapes -- he was, after all, the man behind two of Marvel's greatest successes, even if the reaction to Age of Ultron was slightly less than thrilling. Gifted storytellers of his type often achieve the best results when left to do their own thing, which is next to impossible when attempting to please the many masters involved in a Marvel production.

His decision to step away from the MCU was one of the many topics Whedon recently spoke about during a Q&A interview with the Oxford Union. When asked if he could ever be swayed to direct another Marvel film, Whedon was understandably blunt.

"No. You know I was their sort of consigliere for a while... We do not discuss our thing... But, I sort of had my finger in all of the films in the second phase, but then I just had to concentrate only on Ultron, and sort of know when it was done I was just going to stop," said the Age of Ultron director while speaking on his future with the company.

SHINYGOODGUY

A creative person of Joss's stature could only last so long being handcuffed by
the suits at Marvel. It was a matter of time, but the good thing about his success
with the Avengers means that maybe now he'll get some love from big studios that
will leave him alone, as long as he produces big hits.

And that too, is a matter of time.

ZEEK

Strange that the article acts like it's a revelation that Joss is done with the MCU. I thought he made that abundantly clear even before Age of Ultron came out. He was totally and completely burned out. Understandably so. He was working on a lot of movies for Marvel. I don't even get the impression that it's a bad breakup. I think they both understand each other and know that they have gone in two different directions.

Frankly Age of Ultron was a mess IMO. I watched it again recently and it really felt like it was trying to serve too many masters. It's sad because the first Avengers is really well done. It just shows what could have been. Hopefully the criticism is not lost on Marvel. I am hoping for a return to form with the next Avengers movie.

I do believe that Joss Whedon's understanding and appreciation of a movie's success is quite different from Marvel President Kevin Feige's:

"Kevin Feige's understanding and appreciation of publicity and promotion in the role of a movie's success has led to a string of blockbuster feature films adapted from the pages of Marvel comic books during the past 10 years." -- www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/marvel-president-kevin-feige-named-3904

Every decision at Marvel is about money and only money. Eventually that wears out people who have more than just money as the sole criteria for success. Feige may claim that besides being a businessman he also has a soul, just like Joss, but that may not actually be true.

Then there are reports that Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter, who lorded over Feige until Aug 2015, was a very old and very eccentric micromanager. It wasn't a heart attack that got rid of Ike, it was Disney. A heart attack would have allowed for closure – everybody could piss on Ike's grave, if only he didn't keep it a secret of where he will be buried. He's got enemies. -- www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/09/marvel-studios-ike-perlmutter-kev

There are more possible villains: The Creative Committee. According to the report, the Creative Committee was responsible for a lot of delays on conservative feedback on Marvel cinematic properties. Birth Death Movies claims, for example, that it was the Creative Committee’s notes that caused Marvel’s highly publicized rift with director Edgar Wright. Avengers director Joss Whedon was also very frank about his creative differences with Marvel, calling them “really unpleasant.”
