Broadcast networks are reeling as record numbers of young men say 'no thanks' to their offerings.

Maybe if they didn't crap on every bit of decent programming that came their way, they wouldn't be suffering now, ehe?

This is us, celebrating YOUR misery!!

Now, if one of you decided to pick up Firefly... maybe those ratings wouldn't be so crappy, ehe?

Dumbasses.

That's an interesting article. I think we're seeing the tip of the iceberg. I think all this stuff is heading in the direction of user controlled entertainment in general, music, video, games... all of it seems to moving toward online, on demand service. I think it's a good thing, but I really wonder how it will all shake out - particularly regarding intellectual property rights and that whole mess.

I think we should all send a letter to the editor about this article telling them why we don't watch television. Being very specific about the cancelling of Firefly causing us to use our TV sets as plant holders lately because there isn't anything good on anymore.. :)

This is what gets me:

"If the networks want that mass audience, they're going to have to bring an interactive element into the experience or they're just going to have smaller and aging audiences."
That is utter bollocks. I'm sorry, but it is. How many people still go to cinemas? How many films are interactive? Thank you. How many people still buy books? How many books are interactive? Thank you.

The problem is not that everyone wants interactivity, it's that telly is boring. There's just not enough good stuff on these days to hold the attention, so people wander away from the telly to find something else to do. Something fun. And they end up not missing Mr Telly, and never go back.

So if networks and channels want people to watch, put something interesting on. Something like a sci-fi show. Maybe about a spaceship and it's crew. Who tend to do more criminal jobs than legal, under the radar of some big allied group of planets. Maybe it could have a western twist. Now all we need is for someone to make this show.

Oh, they did, and you cancelled it, Mr Network. See, it's all coming back to bite you in the arse, isn't it?

I guess the only good thing I can say is, I am finally making a dent in my "going to read someday" list and I'm almost caught up on my email. Also all the DVD's I'm buying make a stunning display on my dusty TV.
