NERDIST.COM - Believe it or not, it’s been nearly nine years since the movie Serenity came out in theaters. In the years since, at almost every single convention, and with nearly every single interview given, creator Joss Whedon gets asked, “when will we get Serenity 2?” from some hardcore fan. And although his stock answer has always been “when someone out there gives me money to make one”, I think Joss secretly held out hope that somehow, someway, a sequel to Serenity would happen, and so he’s held out on letting the story begun in Firefly continue in any form. Oh, there’s been random prequel comics here and there, but no out-and-out continuations of the story for these past nine years. But he has finally relented, and we finally are getting a sequel to the events of the movie in comic book form from Dark Horse Comics. In other words, folks, this is as close to a Serenity 2 or a third season of Firefly as we are ever likely to get, so if you really care what happens to these characters from now, ya better get on board...

The comic got one thing wrong in order to keep Mal in the center of things. It should have taken a lesson from how Earth politics handles news scandals that are really 12 years old. Simply admit Miranda happened but it ain't this Parliament's fault. Blame the previous administration, promise it won't happen again, and forget about it. In other words, blame it on the future equivalents to George Bush, Tony Blair, and Mikhail Gorbachev. The problem was real, just not the present Parliament's fiasco. That's how it is done on this world.

Instead, the comic starts nine months after Miranda with a pair of extra-stupid TV debaters, the ugly one angrily denying that millions died on Miranda and the empty headed one unsure but with an open mind to the question. Why is even the fact of death on Miranda still being debated? What politician would allow this scandal to be blamed on them when somebody retired or dead can take the blame?

And why is Mal in the middle? The TV talking heads think they need Mal as guest on their show to settle the issue as if he's the only person who will ever visit Miranda for all eternity. Mal should hire a Hollywood agent to get him booked on the talk shows. I think Inara could be his agent.

Easy, the same way that German citizens didn't know people were dying in the concentration camps on the outskirts of their own villages.

Now take that, and make it about 50-75 AU away, on a little known newly terraformed world in the outer system where most of the immigrants were rimworlders that people in the core would be prejudiced against and not care about anyway.

Only rimworlders would care enough to think that Miranda was a blackrock, a few people here and there might mention family that were lost when the terraforming failed (the official story). It's too far away and too much fuel to go check it personally, and anyone who does care enough to check never comes back, so everyone just accepts the official story and moves on with their lives. Then they hear about a new threat in the area, Reavers, and they all have even less reason to go.

Initially Miranda would've been barely a news blip in the core, and then it would be forgotten. When the Miranda broadwave came in, most people in the core would probably assume it was a prank or something to promote a movie. Only a few crackpots would believe it was real. People on the rim though might think it makes a lot of sense.

I haven't read the comic yet, so I am kinda wondering how in the hell anyone but Alliance higher-ups know Mal had anything to do with it? The Alliance want someone to disappear, the last thing they'd want is anything about the person being leaked to the general public. Only thing I can think of is if someone on the outside deliberately tried to find out and intercepted some top secret communications and leaked particulars. The new browncoats maybe?

If all news is written by the government, then you're right. But if there is an A&E channel or National Geographic, news/entertainment with commercials, there will be news or reality shows about Miranda.

This is a big news story and Mal isn't the only person with a spaceship. In the nine months after Miranda couldn't somebody else to go to Miranda and look for the millions of dead? Commercial TV, if it exists in 500 years, will pay big money for a big story. Mal could have exaggerated. Maybe it was really only thousands of dead. Maybe only hundreds. Proving that the original story was false would make a great news story.

In the comic, nobody has tried to verify anything about Miranda for nine months. That doesn't seem very realistic, unless everybody in the 'Verse but Mal is spineless.

From Serenity's experience, it is a short trip to Miranda. The travel time is shorter than from Australia to Antarctica. Remember all those news reports about a ship trapped in ice back in December? News shows sent reporters to Antarctica to cover the story. I'm sure Miranda is a much bigger story and is worth the danger to get reporters there.

But in the comic, nobody since Serenity has verified Mal's story. That makes Mal the bravest man in the 'Verse, which is what we want him to be in the comic.

Only people with guns on their ships, since there's still a whole bunch of Reavers out there.

And of the mercenary types who might have gunboats, even though there's a whole dead world available for scavenging, most of them wouldn't want to bother with Reavers either.

So that would leave an official Alliance military mission. And you can guess what they would report.

Nobody but Mal has visited Miranda for nine month, even though it is the biggest news story of the year, because that would have cluttered up the comic, making it more than 6 issues.

I sympathize with writer Zack Whedon. His story has to fit into 6 issues. That's how the comic book industry works on Earth.

In the 'Verse, if we pretend these are real worlds, the people are more curious about Miranda than is Dark Horse Comics. People in the 'Verse will want to know the truth now, not 9 months late.

Remember Kaylee built drones to mislead the Operative in Serenity? The Alliance has lots of resources and she still outwitted them with a handmade project paid by Mal.

A News organization could afford to build better drones than Kaylee's and more of them to get pictures of millions of corpses on Miranda. The Reavers will be outwitted by machines.

If FOX News and Rupert Murdoch are around 500 years from now, they'd send faster smarter drones than the Reavers can track. The latest Miranda pictures would be on the evening news. Nothing stops future Rupert.

No they wouldn't. The Alliance would put out some fake report they slapped together in about a month and everyone would buy it hook line and sinker except for the lunatic fringe groups and people on the rim who would be concerned but not want to risk their lives to check it out. That's how it works in real life too.

Maybe the open minded news pundit person in the comic is the core's future lady version of Alex Jones. Who wouldn't do any actual research.

Those weren't drones, they were mostly empty coffee cans they sealed transponders into that they dumped in orbit so they would send off fake signals.

And even if the Alliance let any news agency get away with that, reavers would still shoot down any drones.

Future Fox News would be less than interested in giving the public of the core the real story. All news NOWADAYS is pretty much manufactured to for exactly the spin the powers that be want, it'll be worse in the future. News would probably be pretty much made up on the spot by then.

Finally got my hands on it and all I can say is,

PFAHAHAHAHAH

That was PERFECT bullshit manufactured talking heads government coverup news!

They got aspects of the Snowden case and the "THEY'RE CRIMINALS HANG 'EM" reactions, and references to various real life conspiracy theories like Benghazi and Chemtrails! And then they have the guy getting all sweaty as he rants... Oh man.

Knew exactly how it would be, and it's just as I predicted, every bit of it. Alliance coming out hard with lots of conflicting attitudes about it, it's fake, it's a hoax, but they're still criminals and TERRORISTS even though the information is all fake... Riots on the Rim, not in the core, because only the rim would feel renewed anti-Alliance sentiment... No one knows who Mal is except the alliance and anyone who'd bother to hack some computers to find out... Beautiful.

I tip my hat to the Whedons.

Most of these were performed or funded by the US government. Just so you know. Much of Firefly and Serenity is intended to be a wakeup call to American citizens about exactly the kind of shady junk the US government gets up to that the conspiracy theorists barely TOUCH on. The people at the academy are referred to as "government researchers" a number of times. Miranda and River's sleeper agent conditioning are all references to actual government projects, as is the whole psychic super soldier concept.

Governments only pretend to answer to anyone. Really, they only answer the call of their own ambition.

But, I will agree that Blue Sun Corporation has their fingerprints all over Miranda as well.

That would be why Blue Sun released a couple of contractors to try to recover what they considered company property, and why the Alliance released an Operative of Parliament to silence all witnesses when that failed.

Both the Alliance and Blue Sun were probably responsible. It is potentially suggested that the interests of the Alliance and the Blue Sun monopoly intersect - to the point where they might even be the same entity, or perhaps two sides of the same coin. And yes, they control the newsmedia and the response to the newsmedia absolutely, both those who disbelieve the official story and those who believe it. Propaganda, Corporatocracy, Authoritarianism, and Fascism, if you will, with a lovely side dish of Imperialism to complement the delectable flavour of pure evil.
