America loves a winner!

All the actors , including those who played C3PO , R2D2, and Chewbacca are all pretty long in the tooth. ( R2D2, especially ) He appears in the History of Sci Fi show in BBC, and from what I saw, I don't see him climbing back into that tin can again. At least for very long. Maybe he was just tired that day of his interview, I dunno.

As for the rest...what else are they gonna do ?

I hope we're spared any golden bikini scenes from the Princess.

When did Luke Skywalker get so LARGE? He doesn't match my memories! Mentioning large, Alan Tudyk said at a Con this month that a Firefly prequel would need to explain why Jayne and Mal were looking so much “older” when they were younger. Alan thought bee stings made them swell up. Luke Skywalker has been stung on the face by those very same Space Bees.

They're not hungry actors, while Mal and Inara are worried about starving in Serenity -- Leaves on the Wind.

The casting has helped restore my hope for a good movie. It even looks like they've cast the Skywalker and Solo offspring from the expanded universe to me. I mean the redhead really makes me think they're going that route. Which is music to my ears as the kids are great characters. Though I'm kinda surprised they haven't cast a wife for Luke. I know they're not going to follow the expanded universe to the letter, but bringing in some of the better characters and putting them in different situations would be fine by me. A total wipe of the expanded universe would be a bad move IMO.

I liked a lot of the EU stuff - but won't mind if they ignore it. The vast majority of the filmgoing audience has never read a word of it - so it would make no sense to hang any plot on something established in the EU.

Based just on how table readings tend to be done - it looks pretty much set that Daisy Ridley is almost certainly Han and Leias dughter - but who knows if itll be Jaina (there doesn't seem to be anyone who fits as Jaycen, either).

I suppose Gleeson could be Ben Skywalker - but I doubt it. It looks like John Boyega will be the male lead of the new cast (being the top billed aside from the returning cast), and I don't see that being the case if Luke's son were a character.

My big question - how many aliens will Sirkis play?

Well, most folks tend to put on weight as they age. And he has lost quite a bit in the last year.

I could see Adam Driver being Jacen though the age difference between him and Daisy Ridley would make me think they'd no longer be twins. Which is kinda what I'd like to see when it comes to the EU. Basically treat it like the comics when doing a comic book movie. They might grab a character here or there and change bits and pieces to fit what they're trying to do. Maybe the ages will be different. Maybe they won't do something significant that they did in the EU. Still more or less they'll be the big screen interpretation of those characters. That would be fine with me.

I did read that they recently reiterated that Episode VII will not be a story from the EU. Many fans are taking this as meaning they are completely whipping away the EU. That's not how I read that statement. I take it at face value that they aren't adapting any EU story. To me that doesn't mean the movie will be devoid of any EU material. I mean heck Coruscant wasn't a Lucas creation. It came from the EU and he liked it enough to put it in the movies. That's pretty much what I'm looking for.

However, at the same time a major change from the EU would leave me upset. For instance dropping Jacen or Anakin entirely and/or introducing totally different offspring for the Solo/Skywalker clan. Some say this is inevitable. I still hold out hope that they won't stray that far.

Driver was said to be the villain when he was cast a month ago, and I really doubt they're leaping directly to Sith Jacen, so I think thats out.

Im sure they'll probably use some elements, but they'll likely be small, like planet names and such. The prequel trilogy already wiped out a lot of EU stuff written before they came out (including characters and back-stories) - so Id expect it to happen again. There's just not enough people even aware of it to make it worth being faithful to, from the corporate POV.

I too am afraid that JJ will sterilize much of the action and character development much like in Phantom Menace (about the only worthwhile character was Qui-Gon Jinn) Liam Neeson gives new meaning to the word gravitas. Everyone else could have gone home (Lucas' script and direction was not good at all).

In Star Trek JJ managed to make a half decent movie, with the emphasis on half. I liked the origins story part of the script, and how Kirk met Bones, Spock and the rest of the crew.........but then things went south.

What encourages me, or, at the very least, doesn't have me so leery about this new Star Wars adventure, is that Lawrence Kasdan is involved in writing the script to Episode 7. That alone gives me hope that something good will come of this. If only Irvin Kershner were still alive.......I would choose him.

Ok, let's see how I can narrow down the field. Let's choose acting. First, Liam Neeson was about the only decent thing that went on the screen, and maybe the actor who played Palpatine. All others were weak, at best.
Now I'm a fan of Ewan McGregor, but even he seemed rather wooden and stilted. Mark Hamill is not an accomplished actor, but he looks like Tom Hanks compared to those in Phantom Menace.

Pacing: If you were to view any of the 3 Prequels alongside the original 3 (Episodes 4,5,6) you could see that they don't compare in story pacing. The actors just seemed to be a bit off in dialogue and in movement, which made the story plod along. Somehow the action sequences managed to work. I draw your attention to the Pod races, except whenever they showed Anakin's mom and the others watching on, what we now know as, Tablets. It was so odd.

Dialogue: "I got a bad feeling about this" Count how many times McGregor, as Obi-Wan, uses that phrase. And who could ever forget, although I have tried, the infamous cry by Darth Vader in Revenge of the Sith, "Noooooooooooo."
Enough said.

Shall I go on.

Listen, there is no bigger Star Wars fan than yours truly. That's why I can criticize and complain. I was there in 1977 when the original was released that summer. The beginning of the true Blockbusters. Standing in line to buy a ticket and then standing in the ticket-holders line to enter the theater.
Those were the days. Went 3 times to see it. So I know the thrill of watching film history being made, but also the sheer enjoyment of sitting in a darkened theater and being transported to another world. George Lucas, in writing the prequel episodes, somehow lost the magic.
The scenes and sets seemed so antiseptic in the prequels, there was nothing that seemed lived in and worn. Nothing that felt homey and comfortable, except, of course Qui-Con. In Episodes 1,2,3 even the dirt didn't seem like dirt, it felt somewhat sanitized.
Part of the original's charm was just that, that lived-in feeling. That these folks had been around for a long time, in a galaxy far away. That was missing in the prequels.

What Lucas did was a remarkable achievement in cinematic history and will remain unmatched for some time to come. Lucas was the creative genius behind the best sci-fi movie franchise ever made, and even he cannot recapture that magical moment. Dare I say it? If only Kershner were alive.

Ill give you the acting to a degree, but I also think a lot of it was on-par with the original triology.

Id also say many of your complaints were present in the originals to varying degrees. Harrison Ford and Alec Guiness both rather famously made fun of the dialog in the originals "You can write this shit, George, but you can't say it."

Return of the Jedi being particularly guilty of most of the prequels flaws (pacing, kiddie stuff, rehashed story points, contrivances, etc).

As for the "bad feeling" line - Kenobi says it twice in the trilogy - the exact same number of times Han says it in the originals....

Which kind-of illustrates my point - those a bit blinded by nostalgia tend to excuse the flaws in what they grew up with, while despising the same things in what the next generation grows up with.
