I broke my streak of not seeing any new movies in the theaters. Probably wouldn't have been my first pick for the first movie I've seen in the 2010's, but I think I could have done far worse. Was down with my old man visiting my brother for a few days and they wanted to see a movie in the small theater out there. It was a choice between Shazam! and Dumbo, and none of us wanted to see Dumbo.

I walked away smiling. :)

I haven't seen any of the new DC Universe flicks, but I've heard a lot about the dark and even depressing tone of them, especially when compared to Marvel flicks like Ant-Man, Guardians and Deadpool. This was the EXACT opposite of that.

This is the first superhero movie I've seen in recent memory that reminded me of how I felt in the theater as a 5 year old kid with my mom watching Superman II in my first memory of ever seeing a movie in the theater. It was fun. It was exciting. It wasn't needlessly complex or deep, and it was easily digestible for kids. There may have been an F-Bomb or two in it. There definitely was more than a few middle fingers. You'd all know better than me, but outside of a G rating I doubt you can avoid that in many movies today, and they all made me laugh. I'm no prude about language really, so unless you are I don't think you'd find anything here that would make you think it wasn't appropriate for kids.

I thought of it kind of "Big" meets Christopher Reeve's "Superman".

I think this might have been just what the DARK DC universe needed. I've heard that they were possibly thinking of bringing Shazam on to the Justice League (I assume it will be based off of how well this does in theaters). I hope it does well. I imagine that there could be a few good laughs alone when Shazam and Wonder Woman are together for the first few times.

Shazam might be the thing that gets me to see a Justice League movie in the future. Hopefully he's the hero that DC was looking for.

For what my two cents is worth, Shazam is certainly worth the money if you were already going to spend it at the theater anyhow.

America loves a winner!

Despite the lure of a 5 minute Godzilla: KOTM trailer before this movie at select IMAX showings this weekend, I passed.

This movie, like the other Captain Marvel movie, wasn't made for me.

Seriously, it seems more geared for the kid market than anything else. And so shall it be.

Yes. Although I'll be honest, I didn't know what it was about, other than signalling there's more trouble in store for Shazam! and his family. My old man didn't get it either, so I'm assuming that whatever "it" was, wasn't a part of the DC Universe back when he avidly collected comics as a kid. Somebody in the audience said something like "Oh Boy!" while it was happening, so it must be known in the fan circles. It meant nothing to me though.

I won't post anything specifically about it to avoid spoilers.

Well... yes and no. I'm 40, my old man is in his mid-60's and my brother is in his mid 30's. We all enjoyed it. They put plenty of stuff in there to make it enjoyable for adults who take their kids to it.

Definitely don't expect The Kingsmen or something similar, if that's what you're into.

I'm hoping that this could be the shot in the hip that DC needs. I've been done with the MCU for quite a while. Shazam might be my gateway into the DCU.

EDIT: There is a really good scene at the ending that I think has a joke on multiple levels. (Pre-Credits, not the Coda)

I'd love to throw my theory by anybody who does see it. I'll have to put a spoiler tag on the thread at that point.

Is the coda at the end of all the credits, or in the middle?

Huh... I can't remember now. I know that we sat through a nifty bit of credits where there was artwork of the characters being shown to the song that started right at the end. I believe the coda came right after those, but it's possible that there were your standard black screen with white letters style credits after the coda. We didn't stick around for them to see if there was a second coda if there were.

Kind of strange watching online reviews for a movie that I've actually seen.

It seems to be unanimous. Everybody that I watch on YouTube regarding movies seems to have either really liked it or loved it. There were more than a few comparisons to the Sam Raimi Spiderman movies, and how that style is what we've been missing in super hero movies for a long time.

Also, there are hopes that this is the beginning of a trend where kid friendly movies aren't completely sterilized, like they've been the last 20 years or so. One reviewer said a mom sent him a tweet bitching about Shazam because the marketing was a lie. The movie she thought she was taking her kids to was all jokes and the bad guy terrified them. He said he felt no sympathy because that's what movies for kids were like in the 80's and it'll do their kids good.

I saw Shazam tonight, it was fun. A little long at the end, but funny and rather whimsical. I liked a lot of the jokes and Zachary Levi was hilarious as
the main character.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

More of a Deadpool fan than Kingsmen. Maybe there's just super hero saturation , but I'll wait for the small screen.

Glad it's doing well, glad folks like it, and good for Zach Levi.

The cheesy 70's Saturday Morning show may have scarred me.

I loved Deadpool. Shazam is not Deadpool. I'd say that it's a lot closer to Deadpool than any prior DC flick (at least from what I've heard).

I'd probably put it right up there with the first Guardians of the Galaxy, but with a smaller budget.

I hit super hero saturation ages ago. I still haven't seen the third Bale Batman flick, let alone any other DC flick in between. I could probably count on both hands how many Marvel flicks I've seen including the first two X-Men movies, and the first two Toby McGuire Spider-Man flicks (didn't see the third one of that trilogy either).

I'm glad I was talked into seeing it. I'm sure I could have done much worse for my first theater experience since Snakes on a Plane.

I tried watching this on a flight. It was free, I was bored. But I couldn't keep on with it. I might have made it about a third into it before giving up. I switched to Sudoku game on the screen. It was way more childish than I could handle, not what I had hoped for.

I've still not bothered, and probably won't. My take is simply, to steal a line from Captain Mary Sue, ' It wasn't made for me '.

I won't hate on it though, because I like Zach Levy and all, but the original Marvel just never registered w/ me as a kid. He's part time Superman 2.0.

* BTW - we saw Flash and Superman square off and see who was the fastest, though no winner declared. Will we see Superman and Shazam do a similar contest of strength ?

It was definitely made for kids. Nothing wrong with that though. I found it more enjoyable than the two Avengers movies that I saw. Out of the small amount of MCU flicks that I have seen, I'd only rate Deadpool above it. Maybe Guardians 1 as well.

It was a fun flick, we enjoyed it.
A welcome change to the darkness of the latest MCU movies.

Agreed.

I should also note that the original Captain Marvel was never on my radar and I never got into Shazam either as a kid. Thought the costume was stupid and yeah, figured he was just a dumb superman knockoff.

That's part of the joke though, really. They have a lot of fun with that costume. Great joke with Superman at the end of the movie too.
