I have not yet seen Alita a second time, but the other thread is already pushing Spoilers.

Because this thread is surely to have Spoilers, I won't start them in this post, but in the next post.

Thanks in advance for the input of all contributors.

The first topic I wanted to post about is The Blade.

I still consider this spoilerish, but I have seen promo images clearly displaying what I consider to be spoiler for those who have not seen the film. I have also not read any of the books or comics about Alita. In my review I mentioned it obliquely in order to not be spoiler while still praising the incorporation of historical Legend.

The Blade is first introduced as a weapon of Zapan. It is very sharp and strong, but does not display any magical or supernatural qualities. I don't recall if anybody else handles it.

When it is first handled by Alita, it alights Blue. In many backstories such a glow of Blue indicates that the Sword recognizes the bearer as a True Heart, a Champion of Good, a worthy and Honorable warrior. At one point Alita does declare she does not stand by in the presence of Evil. Some versions have Excaliber aglow in Blue when handled by Arthur. Also with Paladins. Further, a Blade can turn a blinding brightness of Blue or blue-white when it recognizes it's True Master. Which we do not see here.

Then I also thought we could discuss how Dr. Ido stops all the borgs from demolishing each other. He says "no more free repairs" or words to that effect.

Alita is Honorable, from her core.
She was fighting against the floating cities. The remaining floating city, Zolam, is portrayed as the benefactor of the folk on the ground.

So perhaps the folk are being misled.
Perhaps this is another scenario similar to Alliance, ruling over the Honest folk.

The cast credits.
I looked for the credit for Nova, but did not find it. Because this key character is not credited.

Also, Jai Courtney and Michelle Rodriguez are not credited for their roles. Not sure why this is.

Alita's age.
By the end of this film, in 2563, it is established that Alita is more than 300 years old, more than any human or other cyborg known.

So, future revelation could show that Alita's core or copied human is from our time, now.

In the Alita movie, Nova says he doesn’t enjoy immortality as much as he enjoys outliving people and watching them die. That attitude makes Nova the arch-villain. The Nova in the comic book is up to his tenth life, he is Nova X. When a Nova is killed, he has a new body that his old personality is reloaded into. But what about the Nova in the movie? Nova can't be the same as the comic book, which stretches the story over hundreds of issues. The movie cannot do that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Angel_Alita:_Last_Order
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Angel_Alita:_Mars_Chronicle

Select to view spoiler:

Alita remembers in the movie her 300 year old mission was to kill Nova. Why did she fail? What happened?

I’d guess that it is Nova who had the technology to erase Alita’s memories and it is Nova who let Alita keep her very valuable power unit, her electronic heart, and then dumped her corpse where she could be found and rebuilt. He could have ran her through the crusher in the movie if he had wanted her irrevocably dead. Remember that her physician/mechanic was surprised that her brain was still alive after 300 years on a junk pile? It was no surprise. Nova kept her alive until the day before he dumped her for Christoph Waltz to find and repair.

It was Nova who left a berserker body in a crashed spaceship Alita’s friends knew about. Do your really think a spaceship has been sitting in a lake for 300 years and nobody went scuba diving to see what was inside? I don’t think so. Nova placed that berserker body there for Alita, and he did it just before she came looking for it.

Remember, Nova said he was immortal, but he’s not magic. His immortality involves machines to reincarnate him. I think an immortal and very bored Nova wants the excitement of Alita attempting to kill him, with no possibility of Nova X returning as Nova Eleven. But if Nova kills Alita, he will erase her memory again, and after a rest period of decades the contest starts over until Alita wins and Nova goes to his final death with no resurrection. It would please Nova if Alita wins, but he will be fighting against her with all his might. Otherwise, why bother? He could erase himself without troubling Alita, but where is the fun or the contest in committing suicide?

Nova is only playing a game, but for Alita it is all real, which is what Nova wants from her – her very best effort to annihilate him. If there is a sequel it should be called Alita: Vendetta. She is out for revenge for all the humans she loved (and a cute puppy dog) that Nova killed in this movie. I want to see Alita’s Vendette. I want Nova dead just as much as Alita does.

The science of cyborgs like Alita: Battle Angel
https://cosmosmagazine.com/the-future/a-robot-that-can-touch-each-and-

Could a brain survive for 300 years?

Even while you sleep, your brain still needs a constant supply of oxygen. Brain damage from a lack of oxygen starts becoming irreparable after about 20 minutes without it, although with noted exceptions.

Brains can be temporarily put into a state of suspended animation by cooling them down dramatically, and operations like heart transplants are sometimes done this way today.

But keeping the brain cold also requires power, and a brain can only currently be kept alive like this for a few hours, not the 300 years portrayed in the movie.

Verdict: A little brain-dead.

(In the comic book, the solution to real human brains dying from old age is to copy the brain into a brain bio-chip. The next step is the most important: don't let a copied person know they were copied. To know is always psychologically harmful. After Nova accidentally discovered he was a bio-chip copy, he becomes a nihilist arch-villain viewing humans as guinea pigs, including Alita's boyfriend.

The movie has Dr Ido explaining that Alita's heart has enough capacity to power all of Iron City for several years.
So power production is not an issue.
Has nobody actually watched the film before pretending to discuss it? Or did everybody sleep through it?

JewelStaiteFan, I saw the 2-D version. I give it 4 stars out of 5. I want to see a sequel.

As for Ido's description of Alita's heart:

Safety is the issue. Unless Alita was designed as a suicide bomber with a built-in antimatter bomb to destroy Zalem and Iron City at same time, the engineers who designed her would not pack that much energy into her heart. That would make Alita a gigantic hazard to everyone, everywhere she goes. Who would be smart enough, yet also crazy enough, to build a megaton bomb heart that can decide when to blow itself up? Nova is who.

I'll get into the weeds and details later, but for now, I just wanna add my 2 cents on the making of this movie.

The vision, and the desire for those who made this movie , for the fans of the story which goes back to it's 1990 origins, I have to say - is impressive.

IMO, it's on par w/ Serenity when it comes to being a work of dedication and desire by James Cameron, to see an idea finally become realized up on the big screen.

No, it's not perfect. But for all the chatter and noise we got from Avatar, I liked this movie much more. Primarily because it wasn't a thinly veiled retelling of Pocahontas, but in space. But also because of the CG and the advancement of motion capture. As Avatar upped the game when it came out, so has Alita.

It's a differnet type of movie, and in a world of Marvel and DC, very refreshing to see.

For me, there's an added bonus of one of the villains , Ed Skrein, because of his role in Deadpool.

My 2nd viewing was last Tuesday.

The sword is the Damascus Blade. I had forgotten that another part of general lore has blades alighting Blue when in the presence of Evil, while handled by Good.
Nobody else handles it besides Zapan and Alita.

The uncredited Jai Courtney role was as the Motor Baller in the pit during Alita's first attendance at an event, his number is 00. Alita goes by 99.
The uncredited Michelle Rodriguez role was Alita's combat trainer and assault team leader, which are flashback scenes from more than 300 years prior.

I was also more struck with the response Alita gives to both the Centurian and other Evil. In future viewings, I suspect those will be moments of hair-raising.

In this and other ways, I feel her role as a berserker is highly similar to Paladins. The magic, the fighting, the Blade, the refusal to Stand By in the presence of Evil, and in fact seeking out Evil to conquer it.

The 2nd time around, I found it more funny that the Ball gets ignored in Alita's audition, everyone passing it by and even leaving the arena.

I felt the annoying scene was the kid getting his shoulder crushed, and then climbing a wall and doing further acrobatics.

Noticed that too. He should have passed out, or been damn near immobilized, but nope... used that shoulder and arm like it was no biggie.

Glad he 'split ' at the end of the movie. I'd hate have that romance carry over into the sequel.

If there was , I missed it. I've heard several explanations, from it was done to set her apart from the humans, to ' just because it's in the manga ', but if there was a MOVIE explanation, I didn't catch it.

Will have to re-watch anyways, so I'll try to pay closer attention.

IDK about anyone else, but I find her eyes freaking beautiful, and they don't bother me 1 bit.

In a flashback scene, Alita is trained by Michelle Rodriguez, another cyborg with enormous eyes. I think Martians build cyborgs with big eyes because that is their unique style. But you can check it for yourself without going back to the theater: http://rlsbb.ru/alita-battle-angel-2019-720p-x264-omnic/ at 1 hour 8 minutes into the movie.

I now know why Alita put warpaint on her face: because Michelle Rodriguez had warpaint. It is the Martian style of war.

Several people have talked, asked about the eyes. I have never replied because I have never heard of any Canon reference or explanation, other than what was claimed to be in the source comic books. Mostly mere non-tangiential ramblings, opinions without basis.
Canon.

Regarding URM. United ?Resistance? Of Mars. I had the impression that human Colonists on Mars had United to oppose the 'Alliance' of floating cities, and they had developed superior technology - which would make great sense.
Or were they really Alien Beings native to Mars that we've never known about? With invisibility shield? If so, perhaps the eyes are representative of how they look? If that were the case, would not everybody know Alita was of URM technology, based upon her eyes?
I thought Alita was clearly from a human core source, brain. I would think this adds to the case of URM being humans.

The other eye, optic sensor which Ido finds in the scrap heap just before he finds Alita also seemed to be larger than human, and it did not seem to hold the URM fascination.

Alita: Battle Angel has earned $223.4 million in overseas grosses as of Tuesday, which combined with its $63.4m domestic total gives it a $287m global cume. With $90m in China after a week and a likely over/under $25m second-weekend-gross (it'll face How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Green Book), it may end up with "only" $140m in China by the end. So, yes, it would appear that it was a little frontloaded in what was its do-or-die marketplace. It'll still likely pass $400m worldwide, but otherwise, well, ask me again on Sunday. If it ends up closer to $400m than $500m worldwide, that'll make long-term profitability a challenge and the likelihood of a sequel pretty much between slim and none.

That all being said, even a $415 million-plus total was bigger and better than most of us dared hoped when the Robert Rodriguez-directed and James Cameron-produced manga adaptation opened three weeks ago. And it'll be (sans inflation) a bigger global cume than Pacific Rim ($411m), The Mummy ($409m), Edge of Tomorrow ($375m), Mad Max: Fury Road ($370m without China), Independence Day Resurgence ($365m), Legend of Tarzan ($355m), Battleship ($302m), John Carter ($272m), The Lone Ranger ($265m), Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets ($225m), Tomorrowland ($209m) and Jupiter Ascending ($185m). It's not big enough to qualify as a hit but it's not an outright disaster.

Edge of Tomorrow was not a hit? And it's getting a sequel.

As I stated, opening day Wednesday my showing was about empty. Following opening weekend, Tuesday 5:30 showing was Sold Out.

4 days ago ended the 2nd weekend, where's the data from that? And more theaters were showing on the 2nd weekend.

$170 M was the production Budget.

Alita now finds itself alongside another anime-inspired blockbuster film, which also struggled with the question of whether there was franchise potential: Pacific Rim. That film also scored well at the international box office ($309M) and did well enough domestically ($101M), but due to the film's $190M budget, it was deemed a risk for full franchise rollout. It would take half a decade before Pacific Rim: Uprising arrived in theaters.

If there's one last lesson to learn from Pacific Rim, it may be this: once the visual effects designs get done the first time around, it's much easier to implement them in a sequel. A lower budget could be all the swaying Fox needs. See the lower cost for the sequel:

It's kind of a shame that the public isn't privy to the marketing budgets for these movies. I've heard that a rule of thumb for blockbusters is that whatever the production budget is for a movie, expect the marketing budget to match.

If that's true, then in the case of Pacific Rim, I could see where the fear was. $190 million on production and another $190 million on advertising for $380 million, vs a final world take of $408 million. Not very good. But on the other hand, I'm sure they put value into considering how much they can make off of licensing these properties for streaming services as well as BluRay sales after the fact. It still made quite a bit of money.

I don't ever watch TV except for on a break at work. I've heard that Alita hardly got any advertising compared to what they're putting into Captain Marvel.

I'm sure that the "double the costs for marketing" rule is not even close to set in stone.

Oh... then you have to also factor in kids toys (ahem... action figures). They are not doing well these days. Used to be a time where they were an expected huge source of alternative revenue for a blockbuster movie.... Especially for a franchise like Star Wars.

Not anymore. Disney and Hasbro have lost a ton of money on the collectable market in the last few years. Some blame that for being the final nail in Toys R Us's coffin, although I've never seen any data to prove that beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

America loves a winner!

Big eyes are an evolutionary feature which adults find 'cute ', and that helps them decide on sticking around and care for their young.

I also think Mantis's eyes in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 are attractive, for the same reasons. Drax's comment that ' she's hideous ' is funny because universally everyone else sees her as attractive.

Ido did, early on, refer to her as Angel, or his Angel. Possibly complicated by his naming her Alita after his daughter.
Angel could help describe the Forces of Good which alight the sword Blue when she handles it, and when evil is in her presence.
As Michael explained in his titular role, Angels are warriors and fighters for the heavens.

“Alita: Battle Angel” is believed to be the most expensive movie ever shot in Texas. Texas taxpayers will foot some of the bill — likely millions of dollars. Tax incentives reportedly brought that gargantuan budget down to around $170 million. The special-effects-heavy film about a cyborg who awakens more than 500 years in the future reportedly cost more than $200 million to make. It was shot in Dallas and at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin. State officials still are calculating the total grant to be awarded to the production through the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program.

Workers in Texas’ film and television production industry are tracking “Alita’s” box office in the hope that it will be big enough to attract other high-dollar productions — and convince lawmakers that the state’s film subsidies, long a target of conservative budget-cutters, are a worthwhile investment.

“Hopefully, ‘Alita’s’ success at the box office will be married with success at the Legislature,” said Brian Gannon, director of the Austin Film Commission.

Under the program, Texas issues cash grants to companies that spend a certain amount on goods in-state and if 70 percent of the production’s cast and crew is made up of Texas residents.

For films and television shows, the state can reimburse costs of up to 20 percent of a production’s budget. At least 60 percent of a production’s shooting days must take place in Texas to qualify for incentives. According to the latest available data from the Texas Film Commission, it covered about 14 percent of the costs of more than $1 billion worth of productions in Texas.

So far, everybody I've read has said they will see it another time. I have not decided if I'll see it a third time yet. My first 2 times were in different theaters, with different style of seating - normal stadium, and recliner.

When you divide the multi-million dollar Texas taxpayers' subsidy for Alita by the population of Texas, it is less than the Texas sales tax on my movie ticket. So my ticket paid the government funding for Alita. If even half of all Texans patriotically bought a ticket, there would definitely be a sequel made in Texas.

I haven't really seen anybody here mentioning flaws in the story. Other than those who have not seen it.

Does that mean there are none?
Other than Hugo getting crushed shoulder and then climbing buildings.

I think a lot of the backstory is implied, but not yet spelled out.

If you want to nitpick, Vector gets a sword into his chest and out his back, yet he can keep talking, giving Nova's soliloquy about how he has eyes everywhere. I was kind of hoping that Alita would do an eye-roll that indicates she can't believe how evil Nova is.

I did not consider a flaw to be the blossoming relationship between a teenage boy and a Triple Centurian girl.

I just realized another thing. I had assumed the Law Keepers were named Senturians. But maybe they were Centurians. How ironic.

I agree, the backstory was not completely fleshed out. My take on this is we are seeing Alita's story from her point of view, flashbacks in bits and pieces
as we flash into her brain, her thoughts, her feelings. She is as human as she is a cyborg.

That is the premise of the movie. She falls in love, both with Hugo and her father and mother.

The flaw that I refer to in my pocket review is not that these two fall in love; it's has to do with the execution within the movie Jewels. Salazar was so damn believable depicting an innocence and vulnerability that older actresses struggle with.

The actor playing "Hugo" was not up to the challenge, and so, IMHO, failed to convince me that he "was" in love with Alita. Salazar became Alita, while he was acting like he was in love. She was in love with him. That's how good she was. So when I talk about flaws, no matter how minor, that's what I meant.
Ultimately, it did not ruin the movie for me. I was riveted by Salazar's performance. Will it win an Oscar, of course not. But she was so good that I fell in love with her. That's when you know that something good has taken place. I refer to her as "Ripley-like." Her mission was to protect the boy she loved...I got that from her. Very convincingly.

I want to see it again, this time in IMAX.

Did you feel there were any other flaws?
Did you find Michelle Rodriguez, Jai Courtney, and James Van Der Beek? And recognize Hugo's friend as Memo from Bumblebee?

I wondered if it was intentional humor having James Earle Haley as the largest character in the film.

Ahem.

In the comics, does Alita ever make it to Zalem? Yes, she does. What does she do when she gets there? Nova gives her a choice: “How does it feel to have the world resting in the palm of your hand?” The choice Alita makes is very cinematic. It should make a good ending for a movie.

From the table of contents of the final volume of the Alita comic, you can tell what will happen before Alita makes her choice – one fight after another:

For a sequel that won't exist, spoilers don't exist. Remember the Big Damn Trilogy? Serenity 2 and 3 won't exist and can't be spoiled. For Alita, there is more than enough material in the comic books for Alita 2, 3, all the way to 9 but I think they will skip 2 through 8 because 1 is not doing that great at the boxoffice. Instead, they will jump to the end of the series at Alita 9 or maybe not make anything more.

Alita is in a much better situation than Serenity was. Alita's ticket sales are twice as large as Serenity's, in comparison to what each movie cost to make. And Alita already has the story written for all the sequels. Serenity doesn't know where to go next with the story. You can tell that from looking at the comics that came out in the last 15 years about Firefly. The story is flying in circles with no particular planet for a destination.

The last 3 chapters of Alita Vol. 9 have this note before them:
Quote:

What comes after this point is another vision of Battle Angel Alita that was contained in the previous edition printed under the Shueisha Comics label.

Currently, the previous chapter (Fight 051 Epitaph) is the canonical end of Battle Angel Alita. The story developments that come after this page were the basis for what was eventually reborn in an altered and expanded form as Battle Angel Alita: Last Order.

But due to strong desire from the fans of the series to read the original material, it has been included in this edition. It is not Alita canon; think of it as “Alita Gaiden,” if you wish. You may find the more poetic touches of this material entertaining in a way that the expanded worldview of Last Order is not. Please enjoy.

Gaiden is a Japanese-language word meaning "side story" or "tale", used to refer to an anecdote or supplementary biography of a person.

Can Alita: Battle Angel Hit the $500 Million Mark?

It would be surprising if Alita can reach $450 million by the end of its worldwide box office run, meaning coveted $500 million mark is a virtual impossibility at this point.

Not even the manga adaptation's native Japan responded terribly well, with the movie earning only $3.2 million in the country during its opening weekend and dropping out of the Japanese top ten highest earning films in theaters by its third weekend.

Unless Robert Rodriguez's manga adaptation performs extraordinarily well with its home video release, Alita: Battle Angel is not a sure fire candidate to receive a sequel . . .

20th Century Fox's Alita: Battle Angel earned another $4 million overseas to bring its foreign cume to $312.4m (including $129.5m in China). Combined with a $1.9m domestic weekend (-40%) and an $81.8m domestic cume, the $170m-budgeted Rosa Salazar sci-fi actioner has earned $394m worldwide thus far. It may top $400m next weekend, but it's essentially finished after reaching that admittedly arbitrary milestone.

#6: Thanks To The Perfect Cliffhanger, Alita: Battle Angel Sets Up For A Sequel

Any potential film series tends to set up a lot of the world the franchise will walk or sprint through in other installments during its first chapter. Alita: Battle Angel perfectly sets up the big tent of a story arc that the entire trilogy would cover, leaving the audience wanting more. By time the film's finale kicks in, you want to see Alita take her fight to Zalem, and witness her kick the series' big bad, Nova into the next solar system in climactic fashion. Most films wish they had a sign off as powerful as Alita: Battle Angel does; however, not all of them get it.

As Alita: Battle Angel nears the end of its theatrical run, the manga adaptation has reached another milestone at the global box office.

Director Robert Rodriguez's film has crossed the $400 million mark worldwide, $316.2 million of which comes from foreign markets, with the remaining $83.8 million deriving from the United States and Canada.

With a reported production budget of $170 million after tax credits, entertainment analysts predicted James Cameron-produced film would have to earn at least $350 million to break even. Wth its marketing and distribution costs, however, other analysts estimated the adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's cyberpunk manga would need to make as much as $500 million to recoup its expenses.

Alita crossed the $300 million mark overseas nearly a month into its release, buoyed largely by China, the world's second-largest film market. With Shazam! opening next week and Captain Marvel still going strong, however, it's highly unlikely the manga adaptation will reach $450 million before leaving theaters.

So then, nobody found any of the plot points or backstory interesting enough to discuss?

Maybe that's because everybody saw it more than once. Is that it? I only saw it twice so far.

What was your favorite scene? Or line?

Mine might be "I do not stand by in the presence of Evil"

Fox is merging Disney. Disney is less likely than Fox to make a sequel to Alita.

Fox has made some great business decisions in their past, but they’re also not immune from making a few flops. In the first two months of 2019, they have released The Kid Who Would Be King and Alita: Battle Angel, both of which are predicted to lose hundreds of millions of dollars combined for the studio. Those movies were the sort of risk Disney would probably never take, so it seems safe to assume we won’t see the likes of them coming out of the studio any time soon following the merger.

Well, to tell the truth, I'm not sure I care about the zombies and kiddies who have not seen Alita.

I'm not sure if I've heard of anybody who saw Alita and didn't enjoy it.
