Get ready guys, Cage and the Full Metal Bitch are back.

They're not sure when, but it looks like 2018-19 release, that's just my guess.
Still though, I'm looking forward to seeing them again, hopefully they'll cover
the Battle of Verdun (most likely in flashback). Also hopefully they'll have
more of Rita Virtaski, she's an awesome character for sci-fi.

Can't wait!

“Tom Cruise was actually the one who supplied the idea for a follow-up story, and it’s his idea being given over to the newcomers of the franchise–Joe Shrapnel and Anna Whitehouse, who will be writing the sequel’s screenplay.” - www.themarysue.com/edge-of-tomorrow-sequel-is-happening/

I’ll take two guesses at what Cruise’s idea is:

1) The Mimics have (had? will have?) a second invasion if (when?) the first one fails.

2) Or Rita’s story before she meets Cruise. Emily Blunt, in character as Rita, said that Brendan Gleeson (General Brigham) sent her to the insane asylum in one of her past lives, so we could see that. And Noah Taylor (Dr. Carter) was working on a plan that we know would defeat the Mimics, except Brendan Gleeson fired him in every one of his past lives.

Or as the theme song in the Japanese version of the movie says: “This is Not the End”

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I loved the original, will probably watch the sequel (prequel?), but I don't think it really needs any more to the story.

I get your meaning. It kind of reminds me of Inception. I loved the characters and
the story so much, I wanted more.

But what's that old saying; always leave them wanting more.

There is always hope that the next movie can have the same character arc that Tom Cruise went through -- he started as a cowardly weasel and ends as a well trained hero -- but it is Emily Blunt that evolves from weakling to strong warrior.

There is a dividing line that Edge of Tomorrow 2 can easily trip over and fall on its face to become a mindless Michael Bay-type action vehicle that is all empty spectacle focused around explosions, shooting and mass destruction – and certainly the climactic assault on the ruins of The Louvre with a downed plane does approach something of this in the first movie.

Let us all hope that Edge of Tomorrow 2 keeps the big spectacular action movie as only an element happening in the background and clearly suborned to the story that takes place in the foreground about Rita evolving into a super warrior with a really big sword.

We can always hope for a second movie that still understands the capacity for scene transitions. And another story that propels you forward with rapid, acute development. And another story that cares very little for overt and unnecessary adherence to the 3-act structure and instead focuses on getting us through each scene with a real sense of purpose for both emotion and plot. But my hopes might be too high for Hollywood. The next writers might have no idea what made the first movie great, so they just add more explosions to compensate for what is missing in their story.

The audience knows he is Major Cage, and we can conjure him under cover as Private Cage.

That's exactly why I loved this film so much, that right there. It has that "Joss-style" comedy - finding laughter in a tense situation.

Wash: Were I not married, I would take you in a manly fashion.

or

Mal: But, she was all naked and........articulate!

Clever ways to talk about sex without talking about sex in a direct manner.
I just hope that the writers honor that great and clever dialogue.

That, as you know, was a major theme within the film's philosophy (or way of thinking). On the outside Cage held the rank of Major, but on the inside
he was a private (having never been in combat).

Even that scene in the bar, those two Brit veterans look at him with disdain. Cage, through his training with Rita and then his trial by fire in the field, earned his rank, like most soldiers do.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed as well. I've found that many times Hollywood
smells money and throws a lot of it at the so-called Blockbuster, but forget
the reason why a film like Edge of Tomorrow resonated with the audience.
It was a well-written story, good acting and directing - a unique story, but familiar at the same time. A war and action vehicle with a twist.

I think too that Tom gets a bad rap - sure, he's a bit of a loon off screen. But I really liked Knight & Day and the last 2 Mission Impossible
movies, so he might have figured it out (Oblivion had it's moments) by now.
I really would love to see those characters again, especially Rita (EoT was
basically Cage's story). All I can say is..............Tom, please don't
fuck this up!

I normally dislike arguing with fellow Marines.
I had conjured that you would know whether a U.S. Field Grade Officer could be demoted during one nap to Private by a foreign Officer. I was conflicted that you would consider he might be a Private. What sort of process would you think could have been employed, other than criminal actions by General and/or Sgt Farrell, not to mention dishonorable?

I'd say General Brigham was following Hollywood's laws for villains in positions of high authority, instead of realistic military laws for punishing Cage's insubordination, desertion, and disobedience.

The movie also broke the real laws of physics in the movie's version of time travel, so, you know, I don't think about movie being realistic. It is more fantasy-violence-entertainment-hallucination than anything else.

Or, in short, you're watching Cage play a very realistic video game where he has infinite lives until the last stage in the game where he battles the Final Boss. If he is killed by that Boss, he loses the game and is permanently locked out of his Playstation.

Hmmmm. Fantasy rank in Fantasy military in fantastical suspension of belief of anything sensible, reasonable, or based in the real world. I suppose that would work, but I don't think I'll try that.

_____________________________________________________________________________

It is a movie about a man who gets to re-live his life, during a particular time, over and over again. And 2, he gets to fight a giant alien. Pure fantasy with
a side order of sci-fi. So sensibility and reason left the building, but it is
based in the real world (hence the coalition army). It reminds me somewhat of a
movie from a few years back based on a video fighting game - Street Fighter.

It is not meant to be real and asks the audience to suspend their disbelief.
A movie like The Dirty Dozen, The Great Escape or Guns of Navarone would need
to keep to the reality of the story because it's based on real situations
involving real war.

Saving Private Ryan (1998) should have been first (or second) on your examples. "Why?" you ask. Because of Nathan Fillion as Minnesota Ryan.

Nathan comments on his role as the "whiny little crybaby" in Saving Private Ryan.

A movie like The Dirty Dozen, The Great Escape or Guns of Navarone would need to keep to the reality of the story because it's based on real situations involving real war.

Saving Private Ryan (1998) should have been first (or second) on your examples. "Why?" you ask. Because of Nathan Fillion as Minnesota Ryan.

Nathan comments on his role as the "whiny little crybaby" in Saving Private Ryan.

That, as you know, was a major theme within the film's philosophy (or way of thinking). On the outside Cage held the rank of Major, but on the inside

Even that scene in the bar, those two Brit veterans look at him with disdain. Cage, through his training with Rita and then his trial by fire in the field, earned his rank, like most soldiers do.

Are you still on that ridiculous kick?

I felt the same way when encountering part of one episode of Firefly - only to find it was a marathon and I got nothing done for 12 hours.

They need to make the sequel already.

Watched this for the 3rd time tonight, but this time it was at my bud's house with his 70" TV and deep bass surround sound and holy crap I like it more than I did before.

I forgot how good movies were before woke ruined everything.

I told him he was going to like it more than Maverick and he didn't believe me. He's a believer now.
