6ixStringJack: Natives don't have hair on their arms? No kidding. I never knew that. You probably couldn't tell on the old tube TVs though. You'd probably only have seen that in the theater back in the day, huh? |
6ixStringJack: Doesn't sound like my type of movie either. At least now I know that it was a wrestling movie and why it was so popular with that group. I know the song "Lunatic Fringe" from "Golden Earring" was either made for the movie or just played in it. That was about all I knew before I looked last night. |
Brenda: Most like. My dad showed me when I was a kid how to tell a true Native in movies from a white or Mexican. Because back in the day that is what they did. Hired Mexicans or did a white actor up with a lot of dark colouring. They way to tell is if they have hair on their arms. Native Americans don't but Mexicans do and whites. |
Brenda: No worries. I've had that happen too and as to the movie no worries there either. Doesn't sound like it's my type of movie anyways. |
6ixStringJack: My guess, without doing any research or even knowing the actresses name is they probably just picked a white girl with a tan, and maybe there's a scene or two with some older legit Natives from her family that give him some "magic words" that put him on his own early 80s modern-day white boy Vison Quest. |
6ixStringJack: I meant to write more to you yesterday Brenda, but tags and the site were all hung up. I didn't even realize that one made it through.
I don't think Vision Quest really has as much to do with Native Americans like I thought it did. A very young Matt Modine plays a high school wrestler and meets a girl who changes his life. I'm assuming she's a decendent of Natives, but she doesn't really look the part. |
Brenda: Well, since I don't drive and have never driven. Landmarks are all I have. |

Anyway, you have a new friend, Jack |
6ixStringJack: Yeah. Landmarks are how I do it too. Not so necessary anymore with GPS, but that was my go to move back in the day. |
Brenda: 'Fraid not. My ancestors would be so ashamed of me. |
Brenda: Huh. Not sure if I've heard of the movie "Vision Quest." Maybe I should look it up as well. It probably is loosely based on Native Americans. That phrase could even be used in relation to First Nations. Teenage boys and depending on the Nation even girls are sent out on their own for a few days with limited food and water. In the wilds away from their village, they wait until they have a vision, which is their spirit guide. Being, bear, wolf, eagle. They when they go back to the village they are considered an adult. |
Brenda: I know you weren't expecting him to be wearing First Nations regalia. And no you won't find any pictures of him or drawings without being in a suit. Hey, you don't have to tell me about those old photographs. Even my grandfather and that would be my dad's dad looked like that. I have a photo that was taken in photo studio and yes, my grandfather is in a suit and tie, along with my oldest Uncle and my dad. Both sons in as they were called, "knickers" along with white shirts under jackets. Also no smiling. Just the way things were in those days. |
Brenda: No worries. That is why when I have to go into Vancouver say. Don't just tell me the address but give me what buildings are around where I am going. I navigate by landmarks. Yup, if I know where I am going, I could probably do that with my eyes closed. |
6ixStringJack: Sounds like your Indian name wouldn't be Pathfider either, huh? |
6ixStringJack: I remember back when I was on the wrestling team in high school and some of the guys on the team were huge into a movie called Vision Quest (Which I've never seen and I should watch one day). Very long story short, me and a few guys got lost while the team was out running in the woods and since I was the guy everyone knew best of the 3 of us, they gave me the nickname Pathfinder, and I think that came from the movie, which is at least loosely related to native Americans, if memory serves. |
6ixStringJack: Yeah. With Riel I don't think I was expecting to see him dressed up to the 9's in feathers and tanned leather or anything, but all the men just looked so dorky in those old cordory suits and those hair styles back then. I was expecting some towering Chad of a warrior when I saw him and I was like, oh... okay. They got any pictures or drawings of him when it didn't look like he was ready for a day at the office? |
6ixStringJack: Haha. Don't feel bad. I couldn't find my way out of a paper bag. The only time I ever know what direction I'm facing is if it's sunny and I'm outside. I could go to the same place 10 times and still need a GPS to get me there on the 11th time. I think too much, especially when I'm driving and highway hypnosis is a very real thing. I only know any of this because I'm looking at maps. |
Brenda: Riel is a French name and the Metis for the most part half-French, half-First Nations. Riel's blood line is probably something like mine. Enough French mixed that he didn't look especially Cree. That was the thing back in the day. All old pictures you see men dressed like that. So, that probably has thrown you off. |
Brenda: I see what you mean now Jack. Yeah, I guess that is right. Should tell you right now, I never inherited my dad's sense of direction. And I forgot which direction Deadwood is in. |
6ixStringJack: Was Riel part European? It's hard to tell from the pictures, but the few that I've seen of him don't look particularly Native to me. All the pictures I saw shows him in a suit from the time too, so that could really be throwing off my perceptions here too. |
