6. That pole licking thing was just gross. Talk about un-hygienic, he has no idea what was on that *shudder* Ew
5. He just comes in and beats half the crew up, that’s just rude.
4. He talks too much. Enough said.
3. That outfit. I don't know why, but I it annoyed me, could've been the colour, I don't know.
2. He killed a dog, why would you do that?
1. Reasons 6-2 are things that eventually I might be able to get over. But the second, the SECOND you threaten Kaylee, you have dug your grave. No-one gets away with that.
So these are my reasons, do you agree, disagree, have more?
This is my first post, be kind.

I'm not disagreeing with you here, 'cause frankly, Jubal Early is a bad, bad man.

But the pole licking? If you take a closer look, that's the exact spot River was standing bare foot earlier in the episode when was listening to the group. It was still gross (and he probably got space herpies from licking the ship).

He didn't just kill 'a dog', he tortured all the neighbourhood pets, which is why the dog his mother owned never liked him. It smelled the other animals on him. Torturing animals is actually one of the classic signs of a serial killer (along with bed wetting and experimentation with arson) that authorities look for.

And you're kinder than me, 'cause I wouldn't be able to get past points 6 - 2, without even getting to #1.

But, yes, threaten Kaylee and prepare to be *hated* forever more.

Great observation, I missed that connection before. Now this whole licking stuff makes a creepy kind of sense...

...and I like Jubal even less.

Jubal reminds me a bit of the Joker, especailly the Joker from "On a Beautiful Summer's Day, He Was". He's definitely got some sociopathic tendencies.

His clothes reminded me of Michael Jackson's Thriller suit. We must have been on crack to think that it was once in, hip and trendy. Jubal looked absolutely awful in it, but then again, we haven't seen him wear anything else.

Oh, and I also hated his psycho personality, which drove me absolutely bonkers

Great observation on the pole licking, I thought that it might have something to do with that but was unaware if he had found something or not. Your observation made it clear that he did find something or know something.

Just one more thing, I have been told Jubal Early was a I beleve a General back in the civil war of the US and is somehow connected to Nathan Fillion. But then I wondered why would they want a past relative to be so hated. I later found out from the book:-

" Finding Serenity : Anti-Heroes, Lost Shepherds and Space Hookers in Joss Whedon's Firefly (Smart Pop series) by Glenn Yeffeth (Editor), Jane Espenson (Editor) "

that Jubal Early is the vice president of programming for the Fox Network. He wrote some letters in reply to Joss Whedon's letters to him. He (Jubal) is an absolute idiot. I believe that the name was used specifically for a deeper meaning for Joss. I wouldn't be surprised if that is partly how he wrote the script for that episode..."Objects in Space"

I didn't really care for Early's outfit either. I kind of liked the look and design of it but the fact that it squeaked through the whole episode when he moved just made it seem like more of a costume than something the character would actually wear, especially trying to be stealthy.

I knew Nathan was related to the general Jubal Early, but what's this about a guy from Fox? I've never heard that one.

Same goes for me (excepting the licking bit) i thought he was one of the best characters in the show... I mean sure he was incredibly evil AND he threatened kaylee but he was just plain cool IMO absolutely methodical and cold blooded but cool all the same.

You can't deny the guy is a master of his work, he walked on the ship and eliminated everyone with no undue bloodshed, his only mistake was in taking the job of going for river...

I liked Jubal Early, mostly because he was not normal. Granted killing the dog was not needed info. When he threatened Kaylee it made my skin crawl, but over-all he was a likeable bad guy.

Its an observation so chill out...so people don't want to give up so early...what's it to you. Do you feel that you are the only one that see's clearly in all of this. You forget that the only reason the movie ever made it to the screen apart from universal taking the production is because of the fans. And one of the main reason's why the show isn't carrying on through a different network is because the fox network won't give up its rights to it. By the way, who determines where the red line is...you! If it upsets you to read these statements, then don't read them. Why do you even visit the site if you figure that its been and done for. Maybe you (RiveR6213) should question your own motives before you question other peoples.

Jubal Early isn't really the vice president of programming for the Fox Network. The article in the book you mentioned says the letters are a joke right at the front of the article. The author was just having some fun.

I always liked the character. I just crack up every time I hear:

Best guest actor and best villain. Far better than any reaver.

I'd be happy with a spin off.

I concur…..

Although everyone here understands that JE is a bad guy, he is the villain we love to hate. A lot of us feel sorry for the red leather wearing brut. Why? For a lot of what you’ve actually mentioned. The guy’s a complete nut-job, but funny as hell.

I will say that had the series continued I think we might have seen more of Mr. Early, or maybe he could come back when the series returns. Also it would be fun to have him join up with the Operative from the BDM and maybe start robbing banks on their own. There are all kinds of things could happen, the options are limitless.

Jubal definitely has antisocial personality disorder ( fancy term for a sociopath) and he is an evil guy, but he makes a great badguy mainly because he's creepy but rediculous all at the same time.

I too think its not apropriate for people to admit that they want to lick the pole River was standing by, but I'd rather they just talk about that then actually go take advantage of real life touched folk.
(insert uncomfortable face here).

But yeah, Jubal is a first class bad guy.

It's a toss up for me between Jubal and Saffron as Joss' best villain in the series. Saffron makes for great action and comedy episodes where rule of fun is important for Firefly, whereas Jubal appealed to Joss' existential leanings and built a very edgy and quirky episode around him.

One thing I didn't like, though, is you have four black characters in the series and the movie, two protagonists and two villains, but all of them are just a hair scary and violent. It kind of creates some unfortunate implications. Maybe in a future episode they'd have introduced a scrawny black genius hacker who wouldn't hurt a firefly.

I've never felt there was any implications with Firefly. Most of the crew save Simon and Kaylee are a touch suspect and have a less than savoury nature. (I know what you're thinking, 'Wash didn't have an unsavoury side to his personality' - well don't forget that moustache!!) :D

If these sorts of issues are raised it's actually very difficult to defend and almost impossibile to strike some sort of concomitance. Not just with this show but with any.
I think It's more about context.
It bother me less in something like Firefly which is totally make believe but does bother me more with shows such as Friends or How I met your Mother, which are set in one of the most multicultural cities in the world and yet the characters seem to have no black or asian friends.

Probably true, but I do wish Joss had thought of stuff like this when he was making the series so we wouldn't even question it. Also having more Asian-descent cast. Maybe if there's a reboot.

I honestly think there's not an answer to this. If you cast an even mix of cultures it draws too much attention to itself. LOST attempted this and it worked to a point, but many of the episodes resulted to stereotypes to allow for it.

I think the show that presents this without drawing attention to itself is EUREKA.

Don't hate the playa.... hate the game.....

Why was a skitzo-serial-killer on the Alliance's payroll? Because he was VERY good at what he did, right?

You ever see Leonardo in "Catch Me if You Can?"?????

Same thing, except Jubal Early liked to beat, murder and it was implied that he loved raping women and possibly even men and corpses while he did his dirty work, all paid for by Unkle Sam.

The fact that Jubal Early was the bogey man wasn't what was scary.

That fact that Jubal Early was the bogey man on Unkle Sam's payroll was what was scary....

I don't think that Early is working for the Alliance, he's a freelance bounty hunter. They'll give him the reward money just like they would for anyone who turns in the fugitives. ... Or more like, They'd not give him the money just like they would with anyone who turns in the fugitives, remember Ariel?

I didn't notice the thing that Byte pointed out about race. Now that she says it I guess I see it, but I don't think it was intentional and I personally don't see a point in trying to annalyze such things because it seems insignificant to me. But that's just me.

He still gets a check from the top guys from the Alliance and that makes him an employee in my eyes.

There are plenty of freelance journalists and photographers that work for major newspapers today, and although they might not get health benefits or a steady salary, they're still on the payroll, so to speak.

This is the same Alliance that probably did give health insurance to the hands of blue, so the fact that they would gladly pay Early for his services doesn't surprise me at all.

The fact that the episode about Jubal existed, in my mind, speaks volumes of what the Alliance was capable of doing.... How far they would go as a means to an end.

I dunno about Jubal Early = Blackwater, they're just a mercenary milita. The US does pay out bounties though, and sometimes they'll directly hire a bounty hunter to go after a specific target.

Jubal Early is alive and well. He didn’t die out in the lonely vacuum of space, he only took a refreshing drift out in the solar wind. Kinda like someone relaxing in a wade pool.

It isn’t known but Mr. Early had befriended a spacecraft full of Salisbury settlers a short time before he met up with his target (Serenity) and had programmed an alarm beacon straight to their ship. While he is, for the time, enjoying just floating around in space, the settlers are on their way to rescue him. All the while Mr. Early can be thinking of a lie to tell the unsuspected about how he lost his boat.

Jubal Early is way too intelligent a bounty hunter to engage his prey without a backup plan. That could get him killed. He may be crazy, but he ain’t insane!
