Working on a bit of fan-fiction earlier in the week, I suddenly came to realize something of an underlying, mildly visited fact of the Firefly tv series. That fact is that Malcolm Reynolds, character creation of Joss Whedon, is actually not the Captain of Serenity…..Jayne Cobb is!

Watching the show, one can see often times when Jayne refers to Serenity as “his ship”, and even on occasion refers to the Tams as “his crew”.

I know, I know…….. it does seem as though Malcolm is running the show on the little transport, but in reality Jayne is only humoring the ex-browncoat sergeant. It is but a pure fantasy that Mal is in charge of the vessel. My hat is off to Jayne for letting us, as well as the crew of Serenity, and Malcolm himself believe that he is the Captain!

It reminds me of the commercial I’ve seen on tv with Chuck Norris and the WOW universe. Malcolm Reynolds is the commander of Serenity because Jayne Cobb allows him to be!
