The Vidiots at TeeVee have awarded Firefly their "Most Unjust Cancellation" Award. The co-winner is Farscape. Futurama rates an Horonable Mention.

One of their interesting remarks:

Quote:

A sci-fi western, Firefly really began to work when it more deftly mixed genres, shifting from western to action to techno-sci-fi with ruthless efficiency. It was uncompromising in its quirks -- all the outer space scenes were silent, since there's no air (and therefore no sound) in space -- and that idiosyncracy probably didn't help it with your average TV viewer.

Man, no love for shows that start with the letter 'F'.

they cancelled the only two shows that I'm really a fan of. and both win this award. nice people over at TeeVee.

I do like other shows (mostly ones that are long gone) but Farscape and Firefly really were the best by far. and I too could not say which one I miss more.

Your "average" TV viewer doesn't really want to do much work when it comes to watching TV. With Firefly (and Farscape) you actually had to Watch and Listen...and sometimes even (gasp!)Think.

Actually I think it probably helped with the average TV viewer, the emotional manipulation was much stronger without the sound. It served as a huge blank space in which to anchor the viewers to the music sounds. When you are used to some made up sounds being thrown at you, and you are given an emotionally stirring song instead, you tend to connect your feelings for the song to the space scenes (usually Serenity). Especially when people are in trance and not self directing (like when watching TV).

funny, I've found myself watching stuff with sound in space and getting irritated about it now. Firefly spoilt me with that little bit of reality bites. I remember reading how Joss was going to make the movie without sound (in space anyway), but that he'd give in if the producers felt that was a bit too out there for the average viewer. I figure he can just tell them he's harking back to the classics - anyone seen 2001 recently? No sound in that, and it's one helluva lot better for it.

"But that's science fiction!"
"Honey, you live on a space ship."
"So?"
