Important people don't do field work.

Everyone there shared a deep affinity for a show where the moral compass of the lead character didn't always point true north, and the world was a dark, dangerous place where right and wrong are not always easy to tell apart.

I thiink that may be the best description of Mal and crew that I've read in a long, long time...

Good article, with one niggling point.

I keep hearing about the resurrection of a cancelled show by sheer fan will being an unprecedented event.

It is precedented. Star Trek (the original series) had a much longer run than Firefly, but it is another television show that was resurrected time and time again by the will of its fan base. First the fans convinced the network to create additional seasons, then they convinced the network to bring it to the big screen.

So, while we have done the impossible, let's not forget those that preceded us, and did the impossible first. All of these articles ought to rightly read, "Not since Star Trek..."

A big reason for the resurrection of Star Trek came not from the will of the fans, but from Roddenberry, himself. He spent alot of time drumming up a fan base and creating an interest in the show.

I think Firefly was alot more organic. Mind you, I'm not saying Joss was completely passive. He was more involved in dealing with the networks and Universal.

Admittedly, Joss had a few things going for him that Roddenberry never dreamed of, like the internet and DVD sales. I'm sure that made it alot easier, which is why it happened alot quicker.

Anyway, I guess my point is that you CAN argue that Star Trek isn't in the same boat as Firefly. On the other hand, you could point to shows like The X Files and Family Guy as examples of fan resurrected shows. In fact, in a way they were more successful resurrections, cause they got their show back, whereas we got a movie.

Not that I'm complaining mind you
