I was watching Firefly last night and I was watching Inara and Mal and how they interact. I started to think if the show hadnt gotten canceled would they have ever gotten together, or would Joss just love to let us all be tortured by watching Mal and Inara go back and forth.

Its weird to think about sometimes. I mean could I even see them together, or would it just simply alter Mal to much. He's the rugged, tough, independent veteran and if he did fall into a relationship with Inara would he loose some of these traits that draws everyone to Mal.

Just wondering, what do my fellow browncoats think?

Inara would have left before the end of Season 2. We would then have probably seen her from a distance, after a while she may return, but IMO they would never get together. Unless it was the last episode of the last season, as a way of closure.

Otherwise it would not work. IMO.

As I read someone else write elsewhere, it was never "supposed" to work.

The ship. She would have been used to show other aspects of the 'verse and give a insight into the Guild aswell. (IMO of course.)

Knowing Joss, they would have gotten together in the last episode, then she would have died.

That's closure for ya.

slow torture, closure, and death

That about sums up Joss's fairytale endings.

Morena says in The Firefly Companion there was always plans for her to leave the ship, explore the Guild and return later.

Mal's love for Inara is an endearing quality about him, makes him more human...Joss was going to play the tension, for most of the show. Lots of writing potential.

I agree with what he said. Either that, or he might have done a romantical scene with Inara lying in his arms, dying, and them confessing their luv since it didn't matter, she was going to die any way? (yes, I know that isn't likely, but I have a bit of the hopelessly romantic in me)

Adios!

Really? I wouldn't think... But maybe she gets jealous of Inara, shoots her, and causes the overly-romantical scene? Thats an idea...

Do you mean that Saffron shots Inara and then Inara and Mal got "romantic"?
Just alittle confussed on that one, you know, the whole corpseified thing, I thought Mal didnt really go for that one.

Saffron infuriates Inara more than she does Mal.

I'm sure there were many plans in the works to bring her back and stir the love pot! and play-up the UST between all three. Mal's daydreaming on Inara's and Saffron's kiss must have kept him busy while Inara was gone at the training house.
