I wanted to expand on the serenity anniversary thread by asking if you wrote a letter to Universal if you would share them here. This is what I wrote:

September 27, 2006

Dear Donna Langley and Jon Gordon,

I am 18 years old and a college student. I hope you are the one reading this and trust me this is not a waste of your time. I also hope I’m not the only letter you’ll be reading; that there are thousands of letters outside waiting for you. First, I want to say THANK YOU UNIVERSAL for making Serenity. However, I’m not sure if you realize that you have something special; something you can’t buy-loyalty, support, honesty, and love from fans. You hold in your hands the power to make Serenity a sequel or trilogy that has or will have the same fan base as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and Battlestar Galactica. There is also another thing you couldn’t improve if you tried with all your might, that is the chemistry between the characters and their personal relationships with each other, and the viewer’s connection with them. This is the only way people fall in love with films and TV series. Serenity accomplished all of this.
I will be the first to admit that I did not watch Firefly when it first came out by Fox because I was watching the Mini Series of Battlestar Galactica which I believe premiered around the same time. I did however, catch one episode of the show and saw how outstanding it was. The first episode I watched was “The Train Job” which was already near the end of the episode. The first scene was when Mal said, “Now this is all the money Mr. Nisca gave us in advance. You bring it back to him and tell him the job didn’t work out. We’re not thieves, but we are thieves, the point is, were not taking what’s his. Now we’ll stay out of his way as best we can from here on in, you explain that’s best for everyone Okay.” Krawl: “Keep the money use it to buy a funeral. It doesn’t matter where you go or how far you fly I will hunt you down and the last thing you’ll see will be my blade.” Mal: “Darn.” then he kicked Krawl into Serenity’s engine cell. Zoe then puts the next thug infront of Mal. Mal: “Now this is all the money” thug interrupts Mal, Thug: “I got it, I’m good, I speak for everyone and I’m right there with yeah.” I got hooked right there. Then I found out the show was canceled and that there will not be a new season but only reruns. I didn’t see any more Firefly until the Sci-Fi channel did a marathon in 2005 right before Serenity hit theaters. I was so excited for the film, and promised my father I wouldn’t see it without him; unfortunately I kept that promise and never saw the film in theaters and regret it, but not for keeping my promise. When the DVD release came out for Serenity, I bought it without ever seeing it and will NEVER REGRET that. I just recently purchased Firefly’s season on DVD today.
What I am trying to say is please make a sequel, you have taken a large risk with the new Battlestar Galactica because the original version was canceled twice first in 1978 and again in 1980. But this new re-imagined BSG is now on its third season strong. Firefly was canceled by Fox and Universal took the risk with Serenity please just take one more. I am a huge fan of both BSG, and Serenity and you guys are doing an outstanding job. I also own all the BSG seasons on DVD, but I believe there is a larger fan following in Firefly/Serenity than BSG and its growing everyday, but this is just my opinion. Universal you are sitting on a gold mine and you don’t even know it. Please don’t wait until it comes and bites you in the ass later on that you regret not doing the sequel. Once again, thank you Universal for Serenity and letting her fly but hopefully not for the last time. “Love keeps her in the air when she ought to fall down, tells you she’s hurting before she keels. Makes her home.”

P.S. I hope this gets to you by September 30, 2006 for Serenity’s one year anniversary.
