Hello Browncoats! Discovered Firefly a few months ago and have occasionally lurked here to learn more about the 'verse. I was watching the bonus features of the movie DVD and thought I'd ask all you nice Browncoats for an assist on an issue.

On "Future History: The Story of Earth That Was", there appears a screen showing currency exchange rates at about the 1:50 mark.

I can make out some of the names of the 11 currencies listed but can't make out the rest. The list:

1) Chinese characters?
2) Ariel
3) Chinese?
4) Chinese?
5) Chinese? - changes to ???hall (Newhall?)
6) Ezra
7) Chinese?
8) Osiris
9) Bluesun (!)
10) Leena
11) Vffub (?)

Can anyone figure out the rest? Maybe with the HD DVD and a big ol' screen?

These are the things that occupy my mind on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Thanks in advance!

Bluesun is a corperation, the other names seem, to me at least, to be planet names. Since Firefly seems to have two forms of universal currency I'd guess that these are tarrifs of some sort, if you're buying a product from Ariel when you're on Osiris you have to pay a different amount than if you were on Ariel itself.

Since Blue Sun isn't based on any one planet it has it's own rates.

The rates would be for whatever planet the screen was on. Could be very wrong of course, especially since I can't take a look at what you're talking about right now.

CtC, thanks for the response but it's definitely a list of currency exchange rates and not tariffs. I don't see it in the BDM, but my guess it's a background piece on Beaumonde.

The reason this interests me is that I infer from it that the Alliance credit, and therefore the Alliance, is primarily a creation of Londinum and Sihnon and not the central planets as a whole. While Ariel and Osiris are definitely "Alliance compatible" socially, culturally, etc. they were at least economically independent at one point from this evidence.

Blue Sun having its own currency also indicates they wield considerable power outside Alliance control. Makes them even scarier to my mind.

Of course, if those unknown names include Londinum or Sihnon my theory needs to be revised.
