I know the episode writer probably just fudged on the verse to make it fit, but does the verse that Saffron tells Mel in "Our Mrs. Reynolds" (you know... furrow, plough, betrothal, etc) actually come from the Bible? I think probably not, but I thought someone here could tell me for certain.

Thanks!

I googled it just now and it bought me nothing about bibles... only "Our Mrs. Reynolds" Firefly scripts and quote pages.

I tried to help.

It wasn't really a bible quote; I don't think Saffron cares about the bible enough to be able to quote it (at least her profession and attitude suggests that.) She just spouted the line as part of her seduction of Mal.

It seems to me that there are multiple religions and, quite likely, multiple bibles in the 'verse. So, i don't think it is a nieve moment on Saffron's part, but maybe it is from the bible on that world.

remember, their marriage and divorce customs were quite different than what we know.

You might need to wipe my drool off him first (is that too gross? Poor Nathan.)

btw, I always went with the theory that Saffron's world had their own little erotic version of the bible.

Dudes and dudettes,

What she quoted is not in the Bible or what we would call the Bible, regardless of what translation you're using. A nice little piece of writing on the scriptwriter's part, but that's it.

Having said that, Song of Solomon IS pretty steamy and a very romantic love story...go read it! I'd recommend the New Living Translation if you want to skip the "thee's", "thou's" and "thy's".

I'm pretty sure it's not in "The Bible" as we know it, but may be in the Bible (or holy book) used on the Triumph settlement. Remember, Book had to look up their Bible using Simon's dictionary. Or it could be something she just made up to play with people's minds, get guys to react the way Mal did.

JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

Hi Gang,

I asked the same question in another thread, because I was curious, but not enough so to start a search of the bible. Also, since (if I recall correctly) the "episode writer" of 'Our Mrs. Reynolds' was J. Whedon himself, I was especially curious. The answer I received was that it is not in the bible as we know it.

I thought what Book looked up was the marriage code of that culture in Simon's encyclopaedia, but it works better plot-wise that they had another bible, (with verses dedicated to plowing)and that was what Book found.

The thing I've always wondered about was why the people of that community let Saffron (who I don't think was really a part) fake a marriage ceremony. That and why they took that 'job' in the first place, since the beneficiaries couldn't pay in much more than rabbits. Ah, the things we wonder about when we're s'posed ta be working...
