"Browncoats"--that's what the Independent faction soldiers were called during the war for unification. Mentioned in "The Train Job": "Six years ago today the Alliance sent the Browncoats runnin', pissin' their pants." So-called because of the brown uniform coats they're issued (ref Mal's and Zoe's costumes.

Obsessive fans have taken to referring to one another as Browncoats (see http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/?u=Haken).
