President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ruled Turkey for more than 20 years. For the first time, he isn't the favorite to win an election. Who are his rivals, what electoral alliances are there and how fair is the campaign? On May 14, Turkey will elect a new parliament and a new president. And after 20 years in power, the incumbent president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is not the clear favorite. The polls also show his electoral alliance trailing behind that of the opposition.

The news fills heads with nonsense, sometimes you are better educated by not listening to it.

Erdogan's AKP rules Turkey even though it did not win having won only 42% of votes...you assume they have Free and Fair elections?

Rivals
CHP have declared their support for LGBT rights and the feminist movement in Turkey.
Homeland Party, Ataturkism, Populism, minor party.
Independent ...not winning.

there are a bunch of other Good Socialism Party or Workers' Party of Turkey from Far Right to Far Left Soclaism

Far Right jihadi social nationalist islamic party...Rivals or Not...a party which usually supports AKP anyways

Yes, Erdogan has been an interesting character. A thorn in everyone's side. For a while he was onboard with the war against Assad bc - among other things- he got a cut of black-market ISIS oil trade, and was hoping to bite off a chunk of Syria in his quest for re-creating some sort of Ottoman Empire. Eventually he decided that his best bet was with Russia and Russian gas flows.

Construction is big in Turkey, both government infrasructure and private commercial. A highly lucrative and incredibly corrupt sector, which explains why so many buildings fall down during heavy earthquakes. He's kind of mis-managed Turkey's economy, making it vulnerable to western pressure (attack on the Turkish lira) by allowing high indebedness in the USD.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. Any predictions/thoughts on what a new government would bring?

Turkey's Erdogan Faces Possible Historic Defeat As Allies Withdraw Support Over Cost-Of-Living Crisis

Due to high inflation and the aftermath of twin earthquakes that resulted in the deaths of 50,000 people, the country has seen a significant decline in Erdogan's popularity for the first time in 20 years.

Istanbul barber Hakim Ekinci, a long-time supporter of Erdogan, told Reuters that he wouldn’t be voting for the president next Sunday, blaming the government’s economic policies that have weakened the purchasing power of Turkish citizens and made it difficult for many to afford essential food items.

Not that I give one single shit about this along with almost everybody else in the world outside of Turkey and Ted, but I just wanted to rub it into Ted's stupid fat little face.

The initial vote has left the Turkish opposition in “a state of shock and disarray,” Amberin Zaman reports. In the lead-up to the election, polls projected a slight edge for Kilicdaroglu, a former civil servant who promised to restore US relations strained by Erdogan's coziness with Russia and democratic backsliding. (Al-Monitor's own poll had the two candidates in a dead heat).

THUGR: They showed him handing out cash to the people at the polls.

Who is "they"? Where are links to pictures?

And, assuming this is true, at least those voters got something out of voting for Erdogan.
What did YOU get voting for Biden*?

Funny. I seem to recall Raphael Warnock winning the January 2021 Georgia runoff election and clinching the Senate for Democrats, based off of a stimulus check promise that the Democrat ran House and Senate actually had the balls to pay out that exact amount he said to everyone after he won.

Highly illegal activity but Democrats did it so it made zero media coverage here.

Protests or Terrorist Rebels, then civil conflicts, next was a War against the Islamic State, slowly the Taliban comeback Al-Qaeda, ISIS, might return and Turkish again trying in Syrian civil war and a Turkish occupation of northern Syria since August 2016. Turkey vs Iraq vs Iranian terrorists vs Saudi terrorists vs PKK, Islamic State Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, then Al Qaeda, Taliban guns, Iran, then USA then Russia again, Libya Libyan National Army, Hezbollah then French, British, Egypt... and 'Assad' still survives, Jordan, Canada fought with the Western allies for a while. ISIL or ISIS or Daesh Presence might be making a comeback in Africa the Middle East and Afghanistan.

Turkish local elections: Opposition stuns Erdogan with historic victory

Turkey's main opposition party has claimed big election victories in the main cities of Istanbul and Ankara.

The results are a significant blow for Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had hoped to regain control of the cities less than a year after he claimed a third term as president.

He led the campaign to win in Istanbul, where he grew up and became mayor.

But Ekrem Imamoglu, who first won the city in 2019, scored a second victory for the secular opposition CHP.

Mr Erdogan had vowed a new era in Turkey's megacity of almost 16 million people, but the incumbent mayor of Istanbul secured more than 50% of the vote, defeating the president's AK Party candidate by more than 11 points and almost one million votes.

This was also the first time since Mr Erdogan came to power 21 years ago

This is very good news.
