They are going out of their way to not say SULFITES. You know why? Because once the mainstream public figures out they've been needlessly sick for DECADES they are going to get very slowly

Speaking of having been poisoned, I've been close to having a heart attack every night as my rate has been hitting 190/100 pretty regularly. I think I either have an adrenal gland tumor or a mitral valve prolapse. It's going to take two very long weeks to get the tests I need, but if I should happen to pop off the planet before that... It's been swell.

Keep your fingers crossed for the heart problem, as I won't be fighting any tumors. Thanks.

Have you stopped consuming sucralose?

Wha?
Not that sucralose has anything to do with my BP going through the roof, but I never used it to begin with??

PS. And to clarify I should probably add it could also be a thyroid/metabolic problem as well, and if I had a slow growing tumor I would consider surgery once and anything not involving chemo. Either way, this is one of those things where I KNOW something is wrong. I may not even wait until my appointments. This stuff is freaking me out. I'm actually scared to lay down and go to sleep....

My response to feeling like I could be deathly ill has been to lie down and go to sleep. I figured I didn't want to be around for whatever might happen. But I know the feeling - when your body is badly out of whack; and more and more and more extreme things seem to be happening over time. The trend (not to mention the symptoms) is very anxiety producing.

Good luck.

Uh, WISH .... the emulsifiers that were studied don't have sulfites in them ... in fact, don't have sulfur in any form as part of their molecule.

But it's an interesting study nonetheless. I've always thought that emulsifiers were pretty innocuous ... carboxymethylcellulose is just a modified cellulose, and cellulose is a natural fiber found in many foods. Polysorbate 60 is just a sugar alcohol combined with a fat (oh, plus chains of ethylene glycol).

I guess it's like I keep telling my daughter - if you have to apply seven or eight steps (or more) to a food ingredient ... if you have to dry and chop and digest and filter and combine and precipitate and re-filter and bleach and .... in order to isolate a "natural" product .... it's not natural anymore.

I'm sorry to hear of you blood pressure and heart problems. Knowing that you have a complicated medical history, I'm reluctant to suggest anything other than keeping up on your potassium, sodium, magnesium, and water, just in case it's an electrolyte imbalance. I had a recent BP spike myself: my doctor is looking at kidney failure, thyroid storm. I'm glad you're seeing a doctor, and I wish you the best of luck. Let us know how things are turning out, OK?

"The researchers focused on emulsifiers, chemicals added to many food products to improve texture and extend shelf life"

Here's the thing though, sulfites are added to improve texture and extend shelf life in all the things they listed, and when used in conjunction with the eggs and the fibrous crap CAUSES the problem. It's not any one thing, it's ALL of the things together. They are using a vague descriptor of "emulsifiers" so as to not prominently out ingredients and cause a panic.

"Emulsifiers are used in margarine, mayonnaise, creamy sauces, candy, ice cream, packaged processed foods and baked goods"

ALL of these things have sulfites. It's not a coincidence that when I stopped eating sulfites the intestinal problems went away. It's the linchpin. I'm sure the other things aren't great for you either.

Unfortunately, I have nocturnal hypertention and it gets worse when I lie down. My heart thumps so hard- like a washing machine that's out of round- that it's impossible to sleep. Any activity makes me dizzy. Gives me heartburn as well. I'm taking multiple blood pressure pills and I can feel when they wear off. I'm sleeping half the morning since I'm up half the night. Going crazy

I gave a thought about what I'm trying to say.

You start off with fibrous crap that is an irritant already to some people, then you add eggs, which makes a sticky irritant, then you add sulfer and salt ...

Now you have a semi-solid sticky irritant. Basically, you've swallowed a plaster cast and intestines that have an inherent weakness can't process that.

Just thought it would make a good analogy.

My friends who have cut out their sucralose consumption have eliminated their Adrenal problems, and central nervous system ailments, which you had mentioned, plus eliminated their High Blood Pressure, which you above referenced. As well as their Thyroid, Thymus, Lymphatic, and metabolism problems - and they also cancelled all of their surgeries they had scheduled prior to going cold turkey on sucralose.
The description of the problems you related are precisely the reason I mentioned the source of those problems in my friends and coworkers.

You may not be aware of your consumption of sucralose, many do not. It is now found in milk, fruits, vegetables, medicines, candy, ice cream, chocolate, a wide variety of otherwise innocuous, healthy, and nutritional items. Not just popcorn anymore. Even my friends who work to avoid it find it difficult to identify which products contain it, and it spikes their BP, Insulin, headaches, etc.

I would have to be eating gallons of it and since I'm not eating of drinking much of ANYTHING these days, I don't see how trace amounts could cause a 50 point increase consistently every night for a month. Plus, I've had thyroid, hormone, and potassium levels checked every year for the last three. Believe me when I say I've been DESPERATELY trying to figure this out before it got this bad. I've been driving my doc nuts, I'm sure.

We only have dessert once a month by the way. We might also have donuts once a month, but other than that we don't even keep sweets in the house...

Incorrect. This poison/pesticide does not require great volumes. One friend had her insulin levels spike so high one day, after 9 months of no sucralose (meaning she also never needed an injection, or diabetes medicine) that she searched her trash to find the culprit (December, 5 ft of snow, in her bathrobe and slippers - she was steamed). It was a generic kidney bean can she had gotten on sale, used in it her chili recipe, of which she had had one seving the day before - and it sent her blood levels off the charts.

As ingredient labels list according to volume or mass, sucralose is normally listed last or near last in most lists. These same "trace amounts" are what have given many people the same results that you have shared.

You don't keep caned vegetables? Packaged fruit? Milk? Medicine? Like aspirin or cough medicine?
If not, what on earth do you consume?

To be fair, I do not recall hearing about potassium levels being related to sucralose, but I actually don't pay attention as much as the people I have helped with this solution - they all keep much greater vigilance about these things than I do anymore.

Having given your symptoms some thought, has your doctor looked into dysautonomia?

The reason why I suggest this is that most people's blood pressure spikes when they stand up, and drops when they lie down, but yours seems to be doing the opposite. I think this is a classic symptom of dysautonomia.

It's kind of a rare diagnosis. But not so rare that I don't know someone who knows someone (boss's sister) who has it. And getting to that diagnosis involves a tilt table, only done at specialized centers, but I thought I'd pass the idea along in case it might be useful.

Here is a description of what it is from Wikipedia.

Quote:

Dysautonomia (or autonomic dysfunction, autonomic neuropathy) is a condition in which the autonomic nervous system (ANS) malfunctions. It is an umbrella term for various forms of ANS malfunction. Dysautonomia is a type of neuropathy affecting the nerves that carry information from the brain and spinal cord to the heart, bladder, intestines, sweat glands, pupils, and blood vessels. Dysautonomia may be experienced in a number of ways, such as difficulty adapting to changes in posture, as well as digestive symptoms.

The diagnosis is achieved through functional testing of the autonomic nervous system, focusing on the organ system affected. Investigations may be performed to identify underlying disease processes that may have led to the autonomic neuropathy that is causing the dysautonomia. Symptomatic treatment is available for many symptoms associated with autonomic neuropathy, and some disease processes can be treated directly.

The symptoms of dysautonomia are numerous and vary widely from person to person depending on the nerves affected and underlying cause. Symptoms often develop gradually over years. Each patient with dysautonomia is different—some are affected only mildly, while others are often left disabled.[citation needed]

The primary symptoms present in patients with dysautonomia include:[citation needed]

Excessive fatigue
Excessive thirst (polydipsia)
Lightheadedness or dizziness, often associated with orthostatic hypotension (abnormally low blood pressure on standing), sometimes resulting in syncope (fainting)
Rapid heart rate or slow heart rate
Blood pressure fluctuations
Difficulty with breathing or swallowing
Distension of the abdomen
Mydriasis (abnormal dilation of the pupils) leading to blurry vision
Urinary incontinence or neurogenic bladder dysfunction
Gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying) with associated nausea, acid reflux and vomiting
Constipation
Excessive sweating or lack of sweating (ahydrosis)
Heat intolerance brought on with activity and exercise
Sexual problems including erectile dysfunction in men and vaginal dryness and orgasmic difficulties in women

Dysautonomia may be due to inherited or degenerative neurologic diseases (primary dysautonomia) or it may occur due to injury of the autonomic nervous system from an acquired disorder (secondary dysautonomia). Side effects of drugs can cause abnormalities in the function of the autonomic nervous system, producing an iatrogenic form of dysautonomia.[citation needed]

The most common causes of dysautonomia include:[citation needed]

Autoimmune disorders including Sjogren's syndrome, lupus, sarcoidosis, Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis
Diabetes mellitus
Multiple sclerosis
Parkinson's disease (in advanced parkinsonism or early in multiple system atrophy)
HIV and AIDS
Hereditary disorders including familial dysautonomia and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
Pure autonomic failure
Amyloidosis
Botulism
Chronic alcohol misuse
Some bacterial infections (Lyme disease and tuberculosis)
Spinal cord injury
Surgery or injury involving the nerves
Physical trauma or injury
Closed brain injury caused by asphyxiation, poisoning or encephalitis

Sympathetic nervous system-predominant dysautonomia is common in fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, and interstitial cystitis, raising the possibility that such dysautonomia could be their common clustering underlying pathogenesis.[1]

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Please let us know how you're getting along!

You seem to be born under a bad sine, Wishy. Dont want to sound mean, but reading this makes not having money seem trivial.

About the emulsifierz - There are several substansez that started getting dumped on us around the middle 1900z. We are ginny pigz. Its like a big conspirasy between major corporationz & Unkl Skam. Occasionally they get caught and then if enuf peepl care enuf to spend 20 yirz in court, that particular assault will get fazed out over a decade or 2. Leaded gasoline for example.

Most resently it wuz hydrojenated oil. Its still in the faze out period and even tho its disappearing frum the fine print ingredient lists, I suspect its often still there.

And then there are phthalates (dibutyl, ethylhexyl or what-have-you) . Endocrine modifiers, formally phased out of anything that babies might put in their mouths (like pacifiers) but everywhere else: lipstick, medical tubing, automobile plastics, paints and coatings, and anything scented ... "air fresheners", dryer sheets, scented oils used with heated diffusers, etc.
Neonictoninoids ("neonics") pesticides, which act like - surprise!- synthetic nictoine. Some evidence that they are adding to the autism epidemic.
PFOS ... the stuff they make nonstick coating from. Everybody has some in their blood.
PCBS... still around, still causing behavior problems in kids.
Fire retardants (tetrabromophthalate) combine the "best" of both worlds- phthalates AND bromine!
And what about that plastic that your food comes packaged in?

There are literally tens of thousands of industrial and consumer chemicals out there, most of them never tested for safety because it is PRESUMED that they're safe until shown otherwise. (I could say the same thing of GMOs, but that's a whole 'nother long story.)

Hasn't anyone every heard of the precautionary principle?
This isn't "innovation", it's profiteering run amok.

I am still sorry to hear this.

I will mention that my friend with the multitude of ailments from sucralose including metabolism/thymus rollercoaster rides was dreadfully fearful that she would fall asleep while driving - her blood showed her metabolism was in the defined range of "comatose - not conscious" while on max doasage of medication, until she got off sucralose. I hope you were not driving at the time of your wreck.

No, actually Hubbs was the designated driver because I had two drinks and there was ONE INCH of snow on the ground. That's what I get for relaxing for five seconds.

Thank you Jongsy and Sig and Jo for your support.

As for the sucralose thing, I can't possibly avoid any other foods and don't intend to. I don't think that is the problem anyway, but I appreciate the suggestion.

I get tests Wednesday so we'll see. Have to pay 500 deductible before they pay one cent so YAY FUCKING YAY for that as well.

Now, can anyone suggest a good used car?? I need TWO. Our truck has over 350,000 miles on it and is making a funny noise as well.

Yeah, I can build you a bathroom, put on a roof, and make just about anything out of wood you can think of...but both me and hubs have next to NO car knowledge. Surviving woodshop was bad enough with the douchebags hiding my projects and one guy even got someone else hurt because he was so intent on screwing with my stuff. Even the teacher would stand behind me and inspect what I was doing all the time where he wouldn't do with the guys, so the small engine class was just too much hassle. They really need to separate genders for those classes, guys just can't help themselves.

But we did buy a fixer upper once and put $2500 into it to get it running good then totaled that too. It's not worth the effort.

Chronic potassium deficiency may be caused by magnesium deficiency. I read a paper (about blood pressure) where a few hundred people with low potassium were treated in the hospital with the whole armament - supplements, food and IVs. 90% got better but 10% did not. Their potassium stayed low no matter what they got. Eventually they figured out these people needed magnesium - lack of magnesium was keeping them from retaining potassium.

The amount of stress and bad dreams about losing teeth might finally come to fruition soon. I can now say that I've never known about true tooth pain until I truly knew about tooth pain. I live with a moderate amount of pain and discomfort everyday, but you always adjust your new normal. I've severely gimped one of my legs back in the day in a dumb accident, but even the memory of the pain of that moment didn't compare to the pain of drinking that cold glass of water last week. I mean... crippling... I dropped my cup and held my face.

The nearly insane amount of flossing and washing and light brushing I've done since has left me nearly pain free for the last week. However, the other day I was biting into a sub sandwich and actually felt that lower left front tiny tooth tear a bit away from whatever it's attached to. Surprisingly, it wasn't nearly as painful as the cold water, and drinking cold fluids still doesn't hurt.

The tooth is wobbly though. Very much so. I'm doing everything in my power right now to baby it and not use it. When I'm home alone eating I must look ridiculous the way I'm chowing down on food. I don't think I'll be eating anything in public that is tougher to eat than salad without croutons and Italian pasta dishes. Hogies and corn on the cob are officially done for me, probably for the rest of my life.

I'm sorry my example is nothing like what you're going through. I've seriously had nightmares about teeth falling out for so many years that the idea that it might be very soon is really scary to me.

I loved the word Emulsifiers and had to look it up. It led me to Emulsion, which is a word in one of my favorite songs by The Shins.

"Into the crucible to be rendered an emulsion".

Knowing the definitions of crucible and emulsion, I believe I know what that verse means.

That being said, I don't understand how emulsifiers are the names for "chemicals added to many food products to improve texture and extend shelf life."

A crucible is "a container of metal or refractory material employed for heating substances to high temperatures. "

An emulsion is "any colloidal suspension of a liquid in another liquid."

Colloidial means "having the properties of a Colloid".

A Colloid, paraphrased, is any combination of liquids and/or gasses and/or solids in which one substance can be completely immersed in the other in equal parts.

In my mind, I would imagine how the water in your Koolaid jar turns red when you stir in the mix would be an example of a Colloid.

A liquid to liquid mixture that would be considered an emulsion, as well as a colloid would be like the ability to mix zinc and copper to make brass. Such a transformation would require something as hot as a crucible to make them both liquid in form to make such a union possible.

Just to be all geeky about this, an emulsion is a suspension of one kind of liquid in another, in the form of small droplets (micelles) that don't separate over time. Because the suspended liquid is in the form of a small droplet it diffracts light, and therefore becomes milky or opaque (non-transparent).

Milk is a (temporary) emulsion because it is droplets of cream (butterfat) suspended in water, although it is very thin and tends to separate (cream separates and rises to the top). Housepaint is an emulsion, because it is droplets of paint resin and opacifiers suspended in water. Pharmacuetical creams are emulsions, because they are (usually) petrolatum (petroleum jelly, "Vaseline") and active ingredients suspended in water. Mayonnaise is an emulsion, because it is food oil suspended in water. Ditto margarine and butter, although the amount of oil or butterfat is higher.

"Emulsifiers" are the chemicals that hold those small droplets in suspension. Those molecules have a water-soluble end, which extends into the water, and a fat-soluble end, which protrudes into the fat globule. By using "emulsifiers" to stabilize fat globules in water, food manufacturers (Oh, wait! When did we start "manufacturing" food instead of growing it???) can prolong the emulsion and therefore prolong the shelf life of the manufactured food.

There are few natural emulsions - milk, eggs, and soybeans. "Latex" (milky sap) is still another, but you for sure don't want to eat it.

OK, I know this was a geek-spike. I'll go back to being my normal self now (whatever THAT is)!

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

What I find interesting about this is that something as simple as an emulsifier - what could go wrong with that? - can cause such profound changes in the animal (human) that ingests it, via the microbiome. But not just any emulsifier - very specific ones. If I had the time I'd get the paper and see if they think they know, or hjave a guess, about the mechanism behind that effect.

WISHIMAY

Checking in. Because if I don't get a treatment tomorrow I quite seriously may not make it to next weekend.

I've gotten maybe six hours of sleep in the last seven days. Every time I lay down what feels like concrete blocks settle on my chest and I'm left with the lungs of an infant. My toes then tingle and turn numb and a little blue.

I even went to the ER and they were laughing at me, and the nurse called me crazy just on the other side of the curtain. Like I couldn't hear her.

I'm fairly certain I either have a SERIOUS valve problem or I have Polycythemia Vera. My RBC, Hemoglobin and Hematocrit were off the charts.
I've never felt this horrific in my entire life.

I've gotten to the point of begging. I'm bringing a set of handcuffs with me to the appointment and if he sends me away without doing anything I plan to cuff myself to a drawer.

It IS that bad.

Wish me luck.

With those blood values they should take you seriously.

FWIW I wish you great luck. Please keep us posted. There may not be too much we can do other than lend moral support, but I'm sure there's many here who are happy to do that. If it isn't clear, you have mine. Tomorrow - D-day. Go get 'em!

It's occurred to me you might be severely grinding your teeth at night. I THINK you might substitute a cheap whitening tray for a guard. You only need to do the uppers. That'll protect the lowers.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Oh WISH! It's so frustrating when doctors don't take you seriously! And that happens especially when people have something rare.

I would love to be able to do something!

Except where they are by the USDA.

USDA helps manufacture food?

More than the FDA helps 'manufacture' food.

Here is a very short list of the foods the USDA helps 'manufacture'.

Meat processors (ground meat, hot dogs and cold cuts, for example including recalls for listeria), egg processors, poultry processors, grain and nut processors (peanut butter for example), canners (eg canned tomatoes, beans or fish), bottlers (honey and maple syrup) - most food is regulated through the USDA.

The FDA regulates food additives.

You don't know much, do you?

I'm so sorry Wish. I got all my 35 year old problems compounded by 20 years of drinking and nearly that much smoking.

They won't understand what you're talking about until they've experienced and care about it.

That's why they work so hard to keep the old people around. They're the only ones that vote. ;)

Yes Kiki, that's the tooth.

It's always been hanging on, but the pain was horriffic a week ago. No pain since, but the tooth is soo loose. I'm doing whatever I can to strenghten the bond, and baby it while it recovers.

I only recently knew that it could. I figured dental decline was strictly a 1 way street.

I think I'm finally feeling what we were supposed to feel in Health class in HS when we protected an egg for the day.

I know it's so sad that for me it's about my tooth, but honestly, I've never cared so much for anything in my life before last week.

Good luck little guy!

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I asked the doctor if he'd ever been in a state of shock and he said no. I said I have been experiencing the sensations of it this morning for THREE HOURS. He just shrugged.

I got some different meds from him and that was about it. Have decided to write Mayo Clinic and see how much the genetic test is. I'm done with these idiots.

I had conjured the United States Department of Agriculture foisted itself upon "manufacturers" of "food" like farmers, livestock producers, plant growers/reapers, which most people refer to as "growers" or breeders of food. "Processors" would be those who re-package food after it was grown, not manufactured as new.

FOOD and DRUG Administration regulating "additives" which are manufactured as new "food" products is not new information, despite the lack of logic.

Wish

ARGH! I thought of something ... too late. Maybe for next time. To get the doctors to take you seriously you have to play the game. Doctors - bless their pointy heads - tend to write off people who are emotional. They look at a person who is genuinely distressed and think it's all in the head. That puts people who ARE seriously suffering and in desperate need of help to be in the position of least likely to get it.

So next time - be very, very calm. Don't spend a lot of time describing how you feel, spend more time describing events and things that can be observed externally - I was sweating so hard it was running down my face, my ears were ringing so loudly I couldn't hear what my husband was saying even though he repeated it more than twice, I checked my heart rate and it was over 130 beats a minute, when I stood up I fainted, I couldn't lift my purse ...

You forgot to add ego stroke with a submissive posture.

Yeah, I know that.

I've tried logic. I've tried emotional. I dunno if it'll work, but next time I'll see if sticking my head up my ass sounds like a familiar language to them
