Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Here's what happens when you don't have or get rid of those useless government regulations:

China’s State Food & Drug Administration (SFDA) is investigating claims that several drug manufacturers have used cooking oil discarded by restaurants to produce antibiotics.

SFDA says it is “highly concerned” that antibiotic makers have made use of 7-aminocephalosporanic acid (7-ACA), a cephalosporin antibiotic intermediate, produced with the aid of an oily liquid waste collected from restaurant gutters instead of fresh soybean oil.

...

The use of out-of-specification raw materials violates current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), says Peter Saxon, president of Saxon International Associates, a New Jersey-based consulting firm that has advised dozens of Indian and Chinese drug companies on meeting U.S. drug manufacturing regulations. cGMP is a set of standards that all companies supplying drugs to the U.S. must meet.

Saxon says he has encountered numerous firms in India and China that try to justify their use of substandard starting materials by saying that they do not affect the final product.

China is one of the world’s largest antibiotic suppliers. Qilu Pharmaceutical and Joincare Pharmaceutical, two companies alleged to have used gutter oil, issued statements denying the practice. Joincare says it has gone back to its sourcing invoices and verified that it has consistently purchased soybean oil. Qilu says it thoroughly audits the quality of all its raw materials.

I'm not sure China is a shining example of government regulations working well. My understanding is that there is a lot of corruption and that companies and government take place in a lot of dodgy dealing, or what we would regard as dodgy dealing. Bribery, law changing, and lack of transparency, and lots of disinformation make this a difficult place to regard as having good business or government practises.

Well seeing as this is a double post, I'll add here that I see the benefits in regulation, but I can see that they can be misused and open to favouring the favourites, if you know what I mean. Any good system needs independant watch dogs, transparency and accountability and a free press is vital. Otherwise, I'm suspicious

Indeed. And they did it knowingly. Because it was cheaper than doing it right, most likely. What's the worst that could happen, right?

There are people here whose first, last, middle and only notion about government is that it's all evil, or at best useless, and should be completely gotten rid of. And business is the only source of all that is right, good and holy. Forever and ever. Amen.

And there really is a political party in the US with fervent support based on that very simplistic and wrong notion.

I'm just providing evidence to the contrary. I'm proposing that, as strange as it is to have to state this, just b/c it's government doesn't have to make it wrong. And just b/c it's business doesn't have to make it right.
