I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

NIKI- wondering about your reaction.

About your story? Disgust, sadness. I don't believe parental punishment is the answer, just that it might bring awareness to the parents that there is a problem, and that they MIGHT pay more attention. I think parents who are either in denial, such as you mentioned, or just don't care, MIGHT be awakened or pay more attention if it affected them personally.

Rue's suggestion is what I'd LIKE to see--felony conviction, but animals have always been viewed as property, so a) it has minimal chance of becoming, b) there are too little animal control people out there to effectively deal with it, and c) of course there are always ways around it. As with CPS, which can become terribly prostituted to allow those with "power" to do bad things.

I have no perfect answers, there are none as far as I know. I WOULD like very much to see puppy mills somehow stopped, as those go by the wayside almost completely--neither the AKC nor the government agency in charge of such stuff does much.

By the way, a family history of schiz has nothing to do with it. Never met a schiz who harmed animals, they're some of the nicest people I know, and mental illness is NOT a sign of violence--as we hear all the time, but given we hear about people with "mental problems" being violent, few make the distinction. The difficulty with that is that "mental problems" doesn't mean a mental DISORDER--it it is much more often indicative of childhood abuse affecting someone and causing them to be violent. But the distinction is seldom made.

The child you described is pathetic, and dangerous in later life I have no doubt. Had a friend who raided puppy mills, and when she happened across a family who abused their pets, snuk in literally the dead of night, swiped the animal, and rehomed it. Nobody ever figured out it was her, I applaud her initiative, and if I'd known this family and knew how to do it, I'd have kept stealing their pets until they got tired of replacing them.

I'm afraid when it comes to child and animal abuse, I'm pretty hard core and not too well controlled. As was mentioned before, if I saw what Oppyh described, I'd probably be stupid and intervene, because my instincts take over at times like that. My problem, and I know it. I'm a bit surprised to hear it's in Michigan, but then my views are a result of not experiencing anything of the country except the West, I know.

Some sort of early trauma might have been involved with the boy in Sig's, as Sig suggested, but I also speculate that the boy's environment may have created positive feedback for sociopathic or psychopathic behaviour.

Or maybe early trauma just made him likely to hate and mistreat everyone.

(In clinical definitions I'm aware of, a psychopath is born with it, it's chemical imbalances that may be caused through genetics or embryological development, whereas a sociopath is the result of social, likely traumatic influences)

Byte: Correct in your definions, as far as I know. But nobody calls people who act out violently psychopaths or sociopaths. I wish we bipolars and schizs didn't suffer the stigma of these peole as a result of the actions of people with "mental problems". Just a personal gripe on my part.

Em, well. People do call certain people "psychos" and it's unfortunate when people suffering psychosis are mistaken for psychopaths (which is where the derogatory comes from), as psychopathy is generally associated with a violent, criminal element. Which is itself an unfortunate association, because then there's a stigma and a drive to punish "criminal" behaviour as opposed to the considering it behaviour of the mentally ill and wanting to treat and rehabilitate.

It's also unfortunate when schizoidal personality types and schizotypals are lumped together with the other schizos (schizophrenia) which, no, is not intentionally violent. I'd never actually heard bipolarism associated with any derogatory insult, but being popular culture doesn't make much effort to understand mental health and disorders and that ignorant people latched onto that as an insult to use on you on the other board, I supposed you've experienced differently.

I'd say, in GENERAL, mental health issues have negative stigmas associated with them that are unfair. And everyone who has mental health issues, no matter how little pronounced, automatically becomes potentially considered "psycho," regardless of how they're diagnosed or if it's warranted.
