The US State Department on Tuesday said it would deny visas to former EU Commissioner Thierry Breton and four others in protest of European regulation of social media.

The measure comes amid increasing tensions between the US and Europe, with President Donald Trump's administration accusing Brussels of cracking down on freedoms.

Besides Breton, the US visa ban targets:

Anna-Lena von Hodenberg and Josephine Ballon of the German NGO HateAid

Imran Ahmed, the British CEO of the US-based Center for Countering Digital Hate

Clare Melford, co-founder of the Global Disinformation Index (GDI)

Why is the US denying their visas?

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the five people targeted with visa bans "have led organized efforts to coerce American platforms to censor, demonetize and suppress American viewpoints they oppose."

He did not initially name those facing the visa ban, but Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers later identified them in a post on social media.

Rogers described Breton as the "mastermind" of the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), which imposes content moderation and other standards on major social media platforms operating in Europe.

The State Department said HateAid functions as a trusted flagger for enforcing the DSA.

What was the reaction?

Breton decried the ban as a "witch hunt."

"To our American friends: Censorship isn't where you think it is," he wrote in a post on X.

The GDI called the US action "immoral, unlawful, and un-American" and "an authoritarian attack on free speech and an egregious act of government censorship."

The European Commission said it had requested clarifications from Washington on the ban.

"If needed, we will respond swiftly and decisively to defend our regulatory autonomy against unjustified measures," the EU Commission said. "Our digital rules ensure a safe, fair, and level playing field for all companies, applied fairly and without discrimination."

The French government also condemned the move.

"France strongly condemns the visa restriction imposed by the United States on Thierry Breton, former minister and European Commissioner, and four other European figures," French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot posted on X.

That is pretty good. I got a laugh out of it.

But he's still never explained why he can't afford and/or just get internet at home, and what 24/7 library he's posting from when he makes his 3AM posts here.

I've stopped asking about it. Part of me just considers him another government agent among the rest of you that have been studying this site and are now studying just me... and perhaps one or two others like me here that aren't in in the joke. Why not have one who lived near where I do who doesn't question why I call Pop "Soda" even though I moved back to where people say Pop again well over a decade ago now?

That post flurry out of him isn't his fault though if he's never done that before. I learned my lesson and don't bother posting a new thread or a post in a thread if it pops up an error on my side until I've verified in another tab whether or not it already took. More often than not, it did, and if I posted it again there was a dupe made.

More times than not with this site, that occurrence results in my entire post vanishing, diametrically relating to how much time I spent creating the post. Making it unrecoverable. Any finicky detours will give it catalyst to vanish.
Which is why I frequently resort to post small bits at a time, then editing to add to my full intended post.
This time, I seemed to be able to retain the post. But other windows, pages, tabs on this device could not display anything on this site - like fff.net was suddenly down. In which case the post will be erased, unless the commands can be entered before the site completes it's breakdown.
It was only after numerous attempts on a completely separate device that the posts displayed, after some sequence of poking around.
Even the reply I posted would not display on any device, in any window. Even when it double posted the reply it had a time gap of 2-3 minutes without being able to see it took, and that 2nd one had at least a 3 minute delay after the effective command. It took a half hour before I could see that the 3rd post in this thread was from me. Until then, I couldn't knows if somebody else had replied to me.
all other web pages on all my devices(with different connections, hubs, servers) worked without problem or delay, so it was only with this site.

I'd love to give you some advice, but your entire living/internet situation makes zero sense at all to me and though I have no doubts you understand at least the basics of computers and networking, I feel like whatever you're doing right now is severely over-engineering your network solution in 2025 when everything is plug and play and unless you're heavily guarding yourself security-wise, it all practically runs itself without any need for end-user interaction at all.

Are you living almost completely off-grid now? Or... You wouldn't happen to be in prison maybe?

I just thought of that right now, and I'm really wondering about the possibility that you've been posting here from prison for a few years now.

It would certainly explain a lot that I thought was inexplicable otherwise.

A few years ago, library switched to chromebooks instead of real computers. They can be checked out like books, taken home. Don't need to wait for library to open.
