Well, I'm rather cynical about the process.

Because remember what happened to u-soft after it was found to have engaged in illegal non-competitive practices ... how it got broken up into little pieces so it could no longer bully the vendors into selling its systems exclusively, or buy up the competition then bury the product, or engage in market-bending FUD and vaporware?

Yeah, neither do I.

Still, one still does hope.

Oh, it was worse than that. Despite NUMEROUS anti-competitive acts (like enfoldig IE into MS, buying up and killing competitors, and requiring PC sellers to pre-load with MS) the DOJ's case was basically a slap on the wrist. Even the judge, Penfield Jackson, couldn't believe how pathetic their charges were.

But the reason why DOJ didn't seek to break up MS was because MS had a backdoor for the NSA ... remember the infamous "NSAKEY" that was found buried in MS code? ... so it wouldn't have done the NSA at all to have a bunch of competing (and non-cooperating) OSs out there, each with their own encryption software, so the DOJ was just going thru the motions but REALLY didn't want to break up MS. The judge made the unfortunate mistake of expressing an opinion about MS's behavior, and was kicked off the case because of "bias", which allowed the DOJ and MS to go "judge-shopping", and they finally found a more sympathetic judge who allowed the DOJ to do essentially nothing.

But yanno, I don't think anybody needs to go thru the charade of "breaking up" anybody. And I don't think anyone needs to go thru the charade of getting rid of Section 230 protections.

The problem with Farcebook, Youboob, Gurgle, Shitter, Instaporn, and other "social media" platforms is not that they're a monopoly, but that they CENSOR the views expressed on their (what used to be) platforms. They are no longer platforms, they've become PUBLISHERS, and I'm with SIX on this: The answer is to ENFORCE Section 230, and remove protections from liability from internet providers that act as publishers, and put the incentives back in place to allow free speech.
