Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

One of the junk TV shows that I listen to, and sometimes watch, is 'What on Earth?'.

'They're watching you. More than 4,000 satellites circle the earth. ...'

And one of the episodes - Lost Worlds - talks about a site in northern Syria called Tell Qarqur, that holds 10,000 years history of continuous human habitation, in the ground. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tell_Qarqur (By contrast, the oldest pyramids in Egypt are only 4,600 years old.)

It used to be a geological site until it was overrun by ISIS.

And the show mentioned how a violent protest* against Assad gave ISIS* an opportunity to expand. And, it mentioned that ISIS made a regular business of violently holding* historical sites, and selling off plundered artifacts* to fund its atrocities*.

Uh.

Wait.

I thought anyone who was anti-Assad was our friend. A good guy.

OOPS.
