A facebook group started posting that they wanted to start a new national holiday by lynching the president of the U.S.A.

And then the goating began.

Thank you SO much for that, Elvis, it started my day off with a bang. I posted about that "Lynch the President" thing, this was a wonderful follow-up. While I don't condone hacking (the mental-health website I ran was hacked by someone mentally ill and vicious, and we had to kill it and start anew, as well, so been there/done that), the urge to lynch the President, IMHO, deserved it. And I understand their frustration: "We goat because we’re fed up with the lies being told by the ultra conservatives facebook has to offer…we take pages from despicable people who post despicable images and share any untruth they can find..."

That's just it - it wasn't a "hack". One of the "goats" legitimately got promoted to admin of the page, whereupon he then proceeded to lock out all the other admins, including the page's founder, and then the goating began in earnest when he opened the page up to all his goat friends.

Still hacking, 'cuz that's exactly what happened to us. We'd made her admin, she actually helped us build the site, then she had a manic episode and got pissed at everyone, screwed the site something awful and we had to rebuild. Whether the attack is from the inside or outside, it's a hack.

I got a kick out of what THEY did because it wasn't actually destructive they just "goated" the hell out of it:

Needless to say, the original owner isn’t happy about the situation. A new, duplicate page has been set up and the unhappy admin is posting messages on the goat-dominated one whining about the takeover. In the screenshot below, the incensed owner goes on a grammatical- and spelling-error-filled tirade demanding that the hackers return the page. It’s the sort of angry post one would expect from a member of the Tea Party:

“still here!!!!!!!!! get off are [sic] page and restore our main page to us or face prosecution for theft. report already filed and police are investigating. yes it is a crime and money was lost that is punishable with jail time and you will be prosecuted! you don’t no [sic] the law I do!”

The response:

How can "money" have been lost, and does this rise to the level of a "crime", I wonder?

Niki12, your page wasn't hacked and neither was this facebook page.

What was done was done AFTER permission was given to another person. That you don't like what they did does not make it "hacking". Hacking is a crime. It's like you giving permission to someone to paint a mural on your house and then charging them with vandalism when you decide you don't like what they painted. Or like giving someone your credit card and all the info associated with it and then trying to charge them with theft for running up a big tab on your account.

You were betrayed, you were deceived, but you were not "hacked". Nobody broke through your firewall or defeated your password protection measures. You invited them in.

That is what happened to that facebook group as well. To call it a "hack" is to imply that a crime has been perpetrated where none has.

It might sound like quibbling over words, but words have meaning, especially in a legal sense.

I take your meaning, and it is accurate. I still consider it hacking, but I recognize that legally, you're correct. That answers my question about whether there would be a "crime" involved, as the page's owner contended...I don't think there was.
