Zimmerman defense team: Need more cash for proper defense

(CNN) -- The defense team for George Zimmerman says it needs at least $70,000 more to give their client "a fighting chance" in his upcoming trial, according to a post on the website gzdefensefund.com.

Zimmerman, the Florida neighborhood watch volunteer accused of killing Trayvon Martin in February 2012, is scheduled to stand trial June 10.

It is not the first time the website has sounded a dire warning. In mid-April, it said the Zimmerman defense fund "is now running at a deficit, and it is unclear how the defense will be funded moving forward."

On Wednesday, the defense wrote that it had less than $5,000 in the trust account and liabilities of more than $20,000. On January 3, the fund had $314,000, according to an earlier post.

"We've calculated that we need another $120,000 to give George the defense he deserves. At the barest minimum, we need $75,000 to give George a fighting chance," the post says.

So there it is. All you folks who think he's innocent; who think he was justified; who think the prosecution is a PR gimmick; or whatever, now's your chance. You can help. Put your money where your mouth is. Open up your wallets, and send cash now...

Lawyer: Zimmerman prosecutor withheld evidence

BY KYLE HIGHTOWER
ASSOCIATED PRESS
ORLANDO, Fla. -- A court employee who retrieved photos and deleted text messages from Trayvon Martin's cellphone has been placed on administrative leave after an attorney testified that prosecutors didn't properly turn over the evidence to the defense, an attorney said Wednesday.

Former prosecutor Wesley White said he was ethically obligated to reveal that Fourth Judicial Circuit Information Technology Director Ben Kruidbos retrieved the data that weren't turned over.

Kruidbos was placed on leave shortly after White testified during a hearing in George Zimmerman's second-degree murder case on Tuesday. White said Kruidbos was interviewed by state attorney investigators twice before the action was taken.

White said he wasn't surprised of possible evidence violations by Zimmerman prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda.

"I was saddened by it, but I'm not surprised," he said.

Fla. prosecutors failed to get Casey Anthony convicted of killing her daughter Caylee, so I don't give them much of a chance to convict Zimmerman.

Ha. Not if they go by the evidence. But in the court of public opinion, he's already convicted. They'll follow through with this kangaroo court, convict him, and spare the state and the nation of the inevitable ( and damn near promised ) riots if he's found not guilty.

We've had 'Stand Your Ground' trials before in Florida and the law has always been upheld. Zimmerman's defense only needs to raise a reasonable doubt to avoid a criminal conviction, but you're right that this one may be different. It'll be interesting to see the makeup of the jury.
