GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

This was Madame Geezer's idea, so don't blame me for the consequences if you yield.

Since we've been growing tomatoes this summer, we've had to make BLTs. As I'm from the South, I'm constitutionally incapable of throwing away the bacon grease that results, so we have a jar of renderings in the fridge.

Last week, we were going to have a big bowl of popcorn for lunch, as we sometimes do. Madame, fo some reason, suggested, "Just to get rid of it, why don't you drizzle it with some of that bacon grease instead of butter". In a moment of moral weakness, and doubtful of the outcome, I scooped up a couple of tablespoons, nuked it, and poured it over the popcorn with maybe half the salt I usually use.

It was so good. It was salty fatty sinful goodness the like of which I've never had in a snack this side of home-made deep fried pork rinds (darn you Aunt Frances). I could literally feel the cholesterol in my body cheering for the reenforcements it was receiving.

I beg you. Don't try this. Instead, send your spare bacon grease my way, and I'll make sure it's disposed of properly.

One of my co-workers does that and swears it is like having bacon candy!

You can also use a little bit of the bacon grease (about a teaspoon to a tablespoon) with some sea salt on some leeks. Wash the leeks, cut them into about 4" long sections, then cut in half lengthwise. Drizzle bacon grease on them, sprinkle with sea salt or kosher salt, and wrap in foil and cook 'em on the grill or bake 'em. Delicious!

FREMDFIRMA

*complete hysterics*

Okay, okay, I can breathe now...
Me and the ex's new Hubby have kind of a constant polite but snarky back-n-forth over my hillbilly cuisine versus whateverthehellitis that he eats, since he's japanese-canadian - and my particular variation on hash browns involves michigan red potatoes hand cut and then fried in the bacon grease, heavily peppered, of course.

And he's like "holy mother of god, that's like the culinary equivalent of a BIOWEAPON, it's like, invading through my pores or something!"

So there's him, standing on the porch glaring at me, hee hee hee...
