Ah, but he DID *miss* them...

I have long held the belief that, collectively, commerical airline pilots have the biggest balls on the planet, very much validated by listening to many CVRs where they go right on trying up till the very end.

You wanna read about a fascinating bit related to that, google the phrase "Gimli Glider".

Also consider what it takes to rate an automatic, respectful "Sir" from a guy as crass as me.

I remember the Gimli Glider. A couple years ago there was a little story about people gathering impromtu for the 25th anniversary, at the site, and the pilot came to, but no one had actually contacted anyone to do so.
