Texas can be screwy, to me, and here’s a perfect example. They talk about laissez faire when it comes to corporations, “small government” steering clear of enterprise. Many states and municipalities do similar things because a production company means jobs yet it’s not quite that way, it would seem. Not only do they give tax breaks to movie companies (in hopes of attracting them, apparently), but they GIVE some of them money...if they like them, that is.

They attracted the company filming “Machete” with just such incentives. Rick Perry announced that Texas would start paying movie production companies to film in Texas; literally a direct grant out of the stat budget, including
Quote:

Up-front sales tax examption for items rented or purchased for direct use in production;

Refunds of the 6% state occupancy tax on hotel rooms occupied for more than 30 consecutive days;

Refunds on fuel tax paid on fuel used off road.

The company said without these new incentives, they would not have been able to shoot the movie in Texas. All well and good (if a bit much). He announced “We’re gonna move Texas to the top of the credits. I really encourage you to learn about the program...”

But once the movie was done, the Texas government decided they didn’t like that film (maybe because it’s the story of a Texas politician stoking violent hysteria about immigration in order to help his own career?). So they RENEGED on their offer (of probably something like $1.8 million), saying they would not give the company the money after all because of what the movie was about. So movie companies bloody well BETTER “learn about the program” and consider what their movie is about, and whether Perry would like it enough to give the tax credits he promises! Because it is a very, very specific kind of “free market”.

Apparently "small government" and programs to encourage enterprise in Texas isn't quite what the rest of us think of...

Try not to hold it against all of us, Niki. I'm kinda hoping that pRick Perry's bullshit little "Indian giving" stunt will give Robert Rodriguez and "Machete" fans all the more incentive to rent, buy, or go see his movies. I'm going to rent it now just because it's the kind of thing that will piss off Governor Goodhair, aka Junior Bush Junior.

Maybe I'm suffering from some new syndrome where I tend to just "tune out" the rest of the state, and only pay attention to my little liberal oasis in the middle of the state. I think I'll call this condition "Austinism".

Works for me! You just have to whatever you have to do to keep your sanity in a state like that; I've got it good here, but even then, I hear/read things that shame me and I can't believe they happened around here (like recently a protest over a Mosque being built!). There are assholes everywhere and wrongs everywhere, not much we can do about that!

Maybe I've got "Marinsim"!

Eff that, Mikey, start TAKING OVER!

I've noticed that in a case like with Goodhair, when the local political cartel really doesn't have any competition, to even compete IN JEST will draw support well beyond any rational explaination.

Think of it as political trolling.
