Over 100 of the best photos from the war in the South Pacific I've ever seen.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

amazing pics

In photo #2, it states that the IJN photo was 'before' the raid on Pearl, but it's clearly during the first few moments.

Already , you can see the smoke billowing in the background, and just starboard of the docked ships, you can see splashes of ordinance and the concentric ripples of what appear to be bombs, which had missed their targets.

These guys were my father's generation. I look at these pictures, much like when I watched The Pacific (twice), and I know with every fiber of my soul that I could not have survived what these Marines and GI's went through.

There are islands and battles shown in this collection that I never even heard of. I used to have a college professor who was wounded at Saipan. He didn't talk about it much, but when he did it scared the crap out of everyone listening. My generation just wanted to get high and get laid. That's probably why the world is in as bad shape as it is today.

FIVVER

My father in law was a navy medic attached to the Sixth Marine Division at Okinawa (pics 95-98).

He's 95 now, blind and a bit tottery on his feet but still sharp as a tack. He's started telling stories of his service there and yeah Jong. It scares the crap out of me. During the landing both doctors in his medical unit were killed and, being the 'old man' of the unit he found himself acting as the doctor for two days until they could get a real one.

Back in the 80s their kids treated him and his wife a trip to Hawaii and of course we tagged along. Having the honor of seeing Pearl through the eyes of a man who, when he was last there, the wreckage was still being cleared is something I'll never forget.

DREAMTROVE

May it remain forever the World's most pointless war. We stopped imperial Japan to give rise to communist China, a dubious accomplishment, to say nothing of the aftermath left in Indonesia.

The world is in as good shape as it is because we don't have the level of social engineering that the New Deal provided which made this war capable. Yet.
