So my peeps, growing underemployed lower/middle class.
Less peeps to buy SUV's.
Less SUV's eventually produced.
Less work for those making SUV's.
Even Bigger underemployed lower/lower class.
Less peeps to buy compact cars.
Less compact cars produced.
Less work for those making compact cars.

See where I'm goin' with this?

U-TELL-ME.

"Now America's just another broke ex-superpower, looking for a handout and wondering why."

Oh, it seems I'm actually wrong here... it should read: "Super-economic-power-that-was."
See, we can still blow up stuff real good, and that definitely counts for something!

I see it differently, Chris. Rather I see:

Growing underemployed lower/middle class.
Less peeps to buy SUV's.
Less SUV's eventually produced.
Car companies (wanting to make profit) developing more fuel-efficient cars.
Those employed being put to work building those.
Less SUVs, more energy-efficient cars being sold.
A market, as all do, turning from one thing the public wants to another.
And on it goes.

That's what is already happening...on a smaller scale, no question...and hopefully that market will keep growing. There will be less profit made on fuel-efficient and hybrid cars than on big fat SUFs, unquestionably, because the price will come down via competition. But perhaps there will be MORE employees needed to turn out more cars to make up for the profit loss, I dunno. Our standard of living may have changed forever, I can't say. The ability of companies to make the huge profits they have may be lessened as well. But markets adjust, so I don't think the end of SUVs is the end of profits for car companies or increased unemployment, at least in the long term.

You're right about "economic power", in my opinion, but in another way. Tho' I don't dispute our ability to blow things up, and the hold the military-industrial complex has on our economy, I see it more that we've USED our economic power both to buy those military toys AND to control other countries. We're less and less able to do both, so "that was" is right as I see it.

I've always preferred to call it "empire", because that's what a super power IS really, we've just changed the vernacular. Empires reach beyond themselves to control other countries, and generally keep the majority of the wealth for themselves. For the most part we haven't done so via conquest, but via economic conquest. I think that fits us pretty well.

All empires crumble and die, but the country goes on in a more moderate fashion, or rebuilds in a more modest way. There will always be empires, they will always grow fat and corrupt and crumble. "Super powers" denotes something else to me, but definitely yes, that aspect of America is crumbling as well.
