MORRISTOWN TENN. - Morristown police believe former First Baptist Church employee Barbara Whitt wrote more than 1,600 checks from the church to herself and withdrew all the money in cash. So where did it go?

The church has no idea where the money, at least $1.5 million, is. They say it's not in her bank accounts.

The Hamblen County Register of Deeds office showed 6 News all its paperwork related to Barbara Whitt.

She owns one home valued at $80,000 on Montvue Avenue that she inherited from her mother-in-law.

The home also houses two businesses, Whittco Electric Company and Whitt Photography.

According to records, the businesses are owned by Whitt's son, Michael Whitt, who also lives there.

Register of Deeds Jim Clawson also happens to be a member of First Baptist Church. "We want answers. To be honest, I want answers," he says.

Next door neighbor Mike Parker says in the last year, the mother and son gave their home a complete makeover. This included a new building in the back of the house, new fixtures like marble countertops and a big screen TV.

Parker says they also purchased a few new vehicles. "All of a sudden they came up like they won the lottery or something. I was wondering how they got this kind of money in this day and time."

A lawsuit filed by the church against Whitt names the two businesses as well as her son.

The lawsuit points out that Michael Whitt owns a lot of expensive equipment and vehicles, including a 2008 Cadillac Escalade and a 2008 motorcycle, among other things.

She was arrested at the church May 10 but later released on a $175,000 bond.
