First they tried this:

A cold cheese sandwich, fruit and a milk carton might not seem like much of a meal — but that's what's on the menu for students in New Mexico's largest school district without their lunch money.

Faced with mounting unpaid lunch charges in the economic downturn, Albuquerque Public Schools last month instituted a "cheese sandwich policy," serving the alternative meals to children whose parents are supposed to be able to pay for some or all of their regular meals but fail to pick up the tab.

Such policies have become a necessity for schools seeking to keep budgets in the black while ensuring children don't go hungry. School districts including those in Chula Vista, Calif.; Hillsborough County, Fla.; and Lynnwood, Wash.; have also taken to serving cheese sandwiches to children with delinquent lunch accounts.

Critics argue the cold meals are a form of punishment for children whose parents can't afford to pay. Parents who qualify for free meals are not affected.

"We've heard stories from moms coming in saying their child was pulled out of the lunch line and given a cheese sandwich," said Nancy Pope, director of the New Mexico Collaborative to End Hunger. "One woman said her daughter never wants to go back to school."

Some Albuquerque parents have tearfully pleaded with school board members to stop singling out their children because they're poor, while others have flooded talk radio shows thanking the district for imposing a policy that commands parental responsibility.

Now this:
Quote:

The Brantley County school board has asked a collection agency to deal with unpaid student lunch bills.

Cindy Ham, the district's nutrition program director says beginning May 17, the district will turn unpaid lunch bills over to a collection agency based in Waycross. She says a 40 pecent late fee will be added to the amount owed.

Ham says parents are being notified by letter and the policy is being published on the district's website and lunch menus. She says the school board authorized hiring a collection agency a year ago.

FREMDFIRMA

So, those bullies who shook other kids down for their lunch money, they grow up and become politicians who shake school districts down for it ?

No surprise there is it now ?

It's the inevitable result of socially rewarding that behavior.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

First time I've ever seen an actual example of TANSTAAFL.

But those school systems must be losing a lot of money on folks taking advantage of the lunch programs, or they wouldn't be resorting to such measures. I'm pretty sure that the systems have methods for parents who can't afford it to get subsidized. It's apparently those who can afford it and don't pay who are being targeted. The money's gotta come from somewhere, and if they cut sports or after-school activities to make up for the unpaid lunch fees, a different set of parents would be complaining just as much.
