Lakota Indians Declare Independence from U.S.

The Lakota Sioux Indians, whose ancestors include Sitting Bull, Red Cloud and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from all treaties their forefathers signed with the U.S. government and have declared their independence. A delegation delivered the news to the State Department earlier this week.
Portions of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming comprise Lakota country, and the tribe says that if the federal government doesn't begin diplomatic discussions promptly, liens will be filed on property in the five-state region. Here's the news release.
"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us," said Russell Means, a longtime Indian rights activist. "This is according to the laws of the United States, specifically Article 6 of the Constitution," which states that treaties are the supreme law of the land.

US governing of Lakota has led directly to the economic and social decline of the Lakotah people, he argues. Canupa Gluha Mani noted that the life expectancy for Lakota men is only 44, and that alcohol and drug use are epidemic, as are infectious diseases such as tuberculosis. But revival of the Lakota has to be not just economic to improve the circumstances of the people, but cultural too: “Our language is at stake right now” but the US government-backed instutions like the Tribal Police are just “the second coming of the white man’s cavalry”.

Not sure if y'all know this, but they actually did that Dec 20 2007.

Like, two years ago - the US Gov did what it prettymuch does every time the native americans say anything but "Yessa Massa" and ignored them.

Then their own tribes ignored them, probably due to internal politics and corruption - since they weren't hand picked collaborators like most if not all of the "leaders" the US Gov wishes to acknowledge.

Must come as an awful dissappointment to outright TRY to pick some shit over it and get prettymuch ignored by everyone, including most of the media.

I feel for em, but they're in a pretty crummy position to do much when they can't even force the support of their own people.
