I just saw a bit on Nightline about a new reality tv show in Holland. De Grote Donor Show (the big Donor Show). A woman with inoperable brain cancer (or some such) will decide which of 3 "contestants" gets one of her kidneys. The "Contestants" are literally competing for their lives. more than 200 people die in Holland every year whilest waiting for a transplant. Is this show deplorable? or will it raise awareness for the need for donors?
Reality TV?
Tasteless?

I hadn't heard about this, and I didnt see Nightline. But if what you describe is true, then I can answer your questions.

Yes.

One can only hope; I'd say it probably will, but not in the way they intend.

Reality TV?

It isn't that much worse than what we get now. I'd say this is about as real as it gets.

Tasteless?

Absolutely.

Keep in mind that Holland is relatively small compared to the US, so that number may seem small but isn't. I loved the 10 days I spent there, but I'm horrified of the idea of this concept "catching on."........... yet, if more people are enlightened to the concept of organ donation......... is it worth it? does the value of a deplorable show increase just because some good comes from it???

I am so undecided about this.

My first reaction really is: disgusting, exploitation of people's pain, tasteless...

But on the other hand.. how much potential for increased donations is there? As in, how many potential organs statistically come up in a year and how many of those get donated?

Many people probably don't know much about the realities of people who need organ donations and therefor don't think much about it. Showing them the face of people in need might motivate potential donors to make their wishes known to the people around them.

But still. It's vile to showcase the last hopes of three dying persons and put such a choice in the hand of a fourth.

So difficult.

Well, it was all a hoax, or so it seems. Still, the Dutch are nuts, wouldn't have surprised me at all if it had been for real.
